Why do they need to negotiate streaming rights to put a tuner and an antenna jack on the box? I've been OTA for years now, and haven't missed cable AT ALL. Apple needs to leave the cable companies out of this deal altogether; let those networks create apps (a la HBO Now) if they want to be seen by Apple TV users, or let them slowly disappear as Netflix, Amazon, HBO and the other more forward-thinking content providers take over.

Apple needs to add an App Store to Apple TV and be done with it.

Now Apple want's control of the PUBLIC airways/programming.
They are definitely trying hard to become Samsung of the west.

While I agree that could solve some of these issues. It's not apples style. Too many inconsistencies in signal availability. Apple wants to control all of the content you consume so they can ensure the best possible experience in picture quality and buffering. I can only imagine how many people would flip their **** when their new Apple TV can't show their local channels without digital static.

I understand that. But while they are trying to gain extreme controls over video signals, the rumors of delays keep flying.

And those who would be granting Apple such controls don't want to be under Apple's control. They learned from how Apple flexed in it's dominance over their music industry cousins.

So little players like Roku and similar can get deals done. Meanwhile Apple- wanting to "control the whole experience"- keeps struggling to get even a basic basket of core deals done. Why is that? What's different? In this particular case, this is broadcasting that is given away for free via antenna. Yet, Apple needs to delay to try to strike deals with all of these independent stations. There's hundreds of them. And this is a "hobby".

It would be a giant leap forward to have streaming local channels (hopefully for free) on Apple TV. Remember back in the day advertising paid for local broadcast and didn't cost the consumer anything?

I've cut the cord as well but some stations have low signal depending on your home location.

So getting a streaming broadcast would be great as long as it's not altered in ANY WAY by Apple with THEIR advertisements.

Last time I checked, OTA HD broadcasts are still FREE.

That day is still here. Put up an antenna or try rabbit ears. All those "free" signals are still accessible, now in HD at better quality than you can get via Satt/Cable or streaming (compressed) signals.

OMG just release it already. Add local stations and other features later. Just get something out there!

Agreed. How can we possibly complain about all the missing features and how much better some other service is if Apple does not release it. We need something right now!:rolleyes:

Seriously, I cut the cable years ago. If Apple releases something that is just another cable subscription, I will not be signing up. I prefer to wait for something that makes sense and is a better approach. What they have done to date of just adding channels that still require cable subscription in order to use makes no sense to me and is utterly useless (not just to me but to anyone that is a cable cutter).

And this is the point, puting content out there that requires cable means there is no point to the ATV when I already have the cable box.

So NO! Please do not just throw something out there, that is not Apple and not what is needed.

Do it right!

I wish Apple would just kill off the Apple tv already. Roku does everything already and does it one million times better.

Are you kidding? I love my Apple TV. Most of what I watch now is via Apple TV (primarily Netflix and HBO Now but occasionally iTunes content too). I also use it for streaming music.

I also have a TiVo but we don't use it nearly as much as the Apple TV.

I still don't understand why they're even bothering to get into the TV marketplace. It must be a minefield of local and national contracts for each channel. I'd rather they turned the AppleTV into a Roku style dongle that plugs into your TV's HDMI port and creates it own wirelss connection to your iPhone or iPad so you don't need to connect it to a home wifi network.

Honestly heres my take and setup. I've tried all the streaming boxes and while I think Roku is great, the Xbox One wins hands down.

With the Xbox One you can get an OTA tuner that lets you pause tv and use "the guide". Then pair that with your Amazon Prime account which every good consumer has, netflix (which everyone piggybacks off a friends account), and lastly, sign up for "sling TV" for $20 a month, you get 21 live popular cable channels (History, AMC, Cartoon network, TBS, ESPN, etc...). You can also add more channels like HBO if you want for a few bucks more.
P.S. Don't forget the Xbox Remote which lights up when moved.... Best remote EVER!

It's the ultimate cord cutters setup. It's the closest to a-la-cart as anyone can get.

If all Apple is planning to do is offer a skinnied down cable package is it really worth it? That skinny package will eventually become bloated; just look at the current TV and the new "channels" that keep being added to it.

Agreed. If Apple's mini package is very appealing at $30-$40 per month, what's to stop those that would feel the pain from matching that package lineup with maybe a few Apple can't get for around the same price? Bundled as a new "basic cable" with broadband (and voice for those that want it), how does Apple's better UI benefit overcome that?

If I'm a Comcast and this mini cable package from Apple looks like it would steal away a bunch of my customers, why don't I bundle a mini+ bundle that, paired with the broadband one would have to have for Apple's option anyway, I can deliver for less-to-much-less than Apple will charge? Apple has no way to circumvent my broadband pipe, so I can just flex that muscle to weaken their proposition.

I might even adapt broadband-only pricing so that Apple's option would involve a relatively steep premium vs. my new broadband + mini+ bundle. That rumored UI will have to be exceptional to help justify paying up for the very same bundle of channels available with broadband and maybe voice service.

Content from local broadcasters? Add a coax port and a tuner to the Apple TV so people can hook up an antenna to pick up free over the air digital TV. There. Boom. Magic!

Does Roku have the functionality to mirror an iOS/Mac display?

It works with Windows and Android. I'm sure they will add Mac unless Apple are being dicks and locking their consumers into overpriced proprietary junk (apple TV). LOL

This is what would make an Apple TV really great. If you remained inside of their OS the entire time, but it still connected to live network channels as well as the web content we're all used to. So, unlike the current Apple TV where you have to switch back to your regular TV source to watch live channels, a new Apple TV would allow you to select 'Live TV' from a menu. This would be great. A true Apple TV which provides everything you need. Then give it an App Store and a simple SDK, encourage developers and broadcasters to make their services available.

Oh. Well if it doesn't do screen mirroring, I'd suggest the Roku isn't better than the Apple TV for certain people. It's pretty much the best feature about the Apple TV. I use it very often.

Apple TV isn't that expensive either - won't exactly break the bank. Plus it looks nice and the controller is nice as well. Netflix works, it's got a decent Wi-Fi connection, and it does what it needs to. Doesn't exactly break the feature list, though there are a few channels being updated now and then.

In my experience I don't feel like the ATV is that bad. I didn't really feel ripped off when I bought it, and I don't feel ripped off when I'm using it. It's a nice thing to have - not essential, not incredible, but useful if you have lots of Apple devices.

It doesn't have the Apple logo branded on top either... but what's that got to do with their relatively efficient ability to forge deals for content vs. the mighty Apple?

One can always zero in on a unique Apple feature to try to mitigate the attractiveness of a competitor product but that goes both ways. For instance- relative to the topic of this thread- does Apple have as many streaming content deals comparable to Roku already in place? But the point was that tiny little, relatively cash-poor Roku seems to be able to get content deals done- why can't Apple with far more human resources and a mountain of cash?

I have many :apple:TVs myself. I'm a big fan of this little box. But it has been a long, LONG wait for the :apple:TV we all believe Apple could make if they would drop the "hobby" and get with it. A rumor like this implies that- once again- there may be a lack of focus and/or the general reputation of wanting to (over?) control everything (rather than maybe working in more favorable win:win arrangements with partners) standing in the way of getting there.

I'd like to see the Roku (and all other little box) killer that we all know Apple could deliver... if they'd just give it their all. And I don't fault fellow fans venting some frustration at yet another rumor about possible delays.

You're making a different argument. People are not saying Apple TV is bad or a ripoff; this is about people feeling pretty similar to you about it... wanting the NEW rumored one to be all that we imagine it can be. I'm frustrated at the possibility that this rumor is true but that has nothing to do with hating my current Apple TVs or seeing them as some kind of ripoff. I simply want the NEXT one to be great and to arrive soon. Hopes were raised that it might hit next month and rumors like this imply that it might still be some time to get a new one.

This does not need to activate the ADF. This is not Apple vs. Roku or Apple vs. Xbox where a crowd of haters are arguing that Roku or Microsoft is superior to Apple. This is Apple people acknowledging that some of the most relevant features rumored in this new model are already in place in products like Roku and Xbox... and we're frustrated that the mighty, cash-rich Apple seems to struggle to make the same deals. Roku and Xbox are being offered up as examples relevant to this topic, illustrating that what we want is not impossible... just not getting done as fast as we like by Apple. Some of us are trying to spin how hard it is to strike such deals but we struggle with that spin because we can see that smaller, weaker, relatively cash-starved companies have been able to get such deals done... some for years now.

More random claims just as we've been seeing for years on these Apple TV speculations. Seems no one knows what's going on with any of it as if any of the past claims were true, it would have been out years ago.

I think you misinterpreted my remark. I literally know nothing about the Roku. The OP suggested that it was the best thing since sliced bread and is considerably better than the ATV. I use the ATV a lot, especially the display mirroring, so I asked if it has that feature. If it did have that feature, I'd probably buy one and try it out.

As it doesn't have that feature, it's not particularly useful to me. Not to say that it's a useless product. Not to say that the ATV is better because of that one feature.

There seems to be a lot of hyperbole floating around is all, sorry if I phrased it poorly.

Leave out the local channels for now, or just include them for network owned stations for now. Let each network have their archived shows, but leave live local broadcasting out.

I don't get all of the comments saying to put a tuner in the AppleTV. Why would Apple do that? You do know that your TV has a tuner in it, don't you? Just hook an antenna to that!

If people think Apple is going to put a DVR in each AppleTV and that you'd want a tuner so that you can record shows, then you don't seem to get what the AppleTV is about. If the networks have their streaming apps, then you don't need to be able to record live local TV.

The Xbox One is great. But it took Microsoft like 2 years to get the rights to include a OTA tuner. Crazy right??

If anyone ever wonders why your cable TV bill keeps going up. Now you know why.... The TV content industry is a complicated messy minefield of contracts.
