Apple's Developer Center Experiences Daylong Outage

Now I need to enable Game Center in my game and I can't even do that now because Xcode has to connect to the server. Grrrrrrrrrr!

----------

This is really odd, and even the online store in the us is down at the moment. I hope that is unrelated though.

I have a bad feeling it is not unrelated. No way they take the Apple Store down on a weekend unless something is wrong, they are losing a huge amount of money every minute that's down. Someone f-ed up very badly, I just wonder if we'll ever know exactly what happened.

Now they are releasing an updated Apple Store app on Tuesday. So it's possible the store being down is related to that and not whatever is going on at the developer portals. Still, why take the store down for maintenance on a weekend, when most purchases are made? Doesn't add up.

I just noticed the store was down as well. Hopefully all is well. I need to get my beta testers signed up, but haven't been able to. They were expecting to test over the week end.

I was thinking about deleting my credit card info from my iTunes account, because it it identical with my dev account.

But I hope Apple does not store billing related info at the same place.

Other than that, it's not really all that critical to me.

If Apple's data for credit/debit cars was infiltrated then there would be more than just the developers centre down and Apple would have had to release the information to the public.

Yup, news coming in now suggests it's effecting non-Developer accounts as well. This is getting interesting.

Password resets that people didn't request have been happening for a long time. There have always been people trying to brute force accounts, and I see no reason why that would have changed recently. Here is just one example I found in 2 minutes of searching.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5116719?start=0&tstart=0

I've seen tons of posts like this over the past couple years. It happens relatively frequently.

It seems to me that those requests to developers are most likely coincidence. There are a ton of developers, and I would imagine that in such a large group, it is very likely that a few of them will receive unauthorized password reset requests.

I'll admit they were becoming blunt, but it's in part because speculation is running wildly and there's stuff being said that is wildly out of touch with reality.

Normally I wouldn't say anything (and my history demonstrates I never do) but the conversation has started taking the speculation as fact, and started basing further opinions as if it was so.

I'm not speculating because I'm not trying to imagine whatever could be happening in Apple using only downtime as a basis. This is just nuts, and people are getting all worked up about wild theories based on air (I'm getting worked up about the forum, not Apple, not the same :D)

I'm not suggesting you are an alien, but I do have a lot of difficulty relating to people who get worked up about speculation.
All the comments I've read on this thread seem to make it very clear what is speculation and what isn't, and personally, I really quite enjoy reading all the different ideas.

In a situation like this, where we have close to 0 information, it is similar to a black box experiment. And where I am interested in what people are doing with this limited information, other personalities such as your own, are getting upset.

I'm not intending this to be a criticism, but I'd be genuinely fascinated to hear more about how you feel when you read speculation and guesswork. Does it make you feel uncomfortable, do you feel similarly upset when contemplating other uncertainties in life?

The developer portal is where you go to download iOS system images (including beta images if you have access), access the SDK documentation (including prerelease documentation if you have access), and the developer forums. It's also where you set up provisioning profiles, etc before the latest XCode started managing them.

Xcode is timing out when I try to add a provisioning profile in Xcode. I assume it is a portal to the Dev Center, so is also not accessible.

I hope Apple will do the decent thing and extend every account by the number of days the outage lasts. That way we get the number of days usage we paid for.

Or in my case, since I'm already familiar with it, I could make an Android app that would have taken me just 2 days to make were it an iOS app.

If you're a decent enough programmer, theres negligible difference in dev time across iOS or Android really. Both have good points, and both have majorly bad points. No way in hell is one 'better' than the other when it comes to development speed though.

The only reason most of us tend to sway towards iOS is due to higher sales on paid apps.

I concur. They're currently only planning to extend those memberships due to expire during the blackout. But regardless when our accounts are due to expire, we're ALL paying for 365 days.

I bet it takes less time to make an app that runs great on 90% of the of the iOS devices as opposed to making one that runs great on 90% of the Android devices.

I do not understand why this is not more widely reported.

This is a major fubar.

Developer's rely on this site to make a living.

It is absolutely inexcusable in 2013 for a website to be down 3 days and counting.

I love Apple as much as many fanboys, but Apple without Steve is a shell of
itself.

Very disappointed.

Yes, I am a developer so this is impacting me.

It makes me so nervous I had to start smoking again.
Also, I drink more coffee than normal.
I bite on nails and unhealthy sweets...

I see a lawsuit coming ;)
