On occasion, we eat at a restaurant or stay at a hotel that has valet service. If you are unlocking, driving w/ yout phone digital key, do you just hand the valet your iPhone and go inside?
When you just have your car serviced, do you leave your iPhone with them?
Inquiring minds want to know.
My guess is like with Tesla, there's a valet mode, but it's a good question.

Yes, especially as NFC cards are so cheap. I've even seen business cards with NFC chips.
Mercedes had keyless entry in 1998, this is are just new implementations. Renault did with a Fuego in 82, and Corvette did it in 93. The below Mercedes is the first one I drove as I had a boss whose wife got a new one and that became my company car.

Great, now when is Chevrolet, Cadillac -- GM in general going to support this?! ;)
GM had remote entry with a Corvette in 93. GM likes charging extra for convenience features so they roll their own. It is the American way. An Example would be Factory car stereos in the US for years were not based on standard DIN dimensions but oddball designs to prevent you from changing OEM stereos or having to buy an expensive adapter to put an Alpine in. And then dash looked like ****.

FWIW, if I approach my BMW with its BMW key in my pocket, The door(s) will unlock when I touch the door handle. It can be set to unlock all doors or just the driver's door. When I get out and walk away, the doors, will lock without me having to do anything but walk away.
Hard to see the iPhone/watch digital key improving on this.
No key needed, ability to share the key digitally, and as the article states, will prevent people from using a relay to unlock your car.

BMW has a valet mode and when you have used a digital key you must hand over the physical key card over to the valet - so good idea to keep that with you. Though I'd imagine if you're staying at a hotel with valet, you'll have the foresight to take a physical key with you? The restaurant scenario might be more of an issue. Though valet parking is less of a thing here in the U.K. or maybe I'm not eating/staying at the right places, ha!

First, Apple releases AirTags and keyrings. They wait a few weeks for everyone to buy then, then announce you don't actually need your keys with you 😁

Not having your key is the glaringly obvious improvement. One less thing to carry
It's especially usefull when you hadn't a chance to pick it up. Like coming home with your bike and remembering you wanted to get something from the car but the car key is not with you because you didn't intent to use it. I can open my car with my iPhone too, but if it's in the underground garage I don't have internet and neither has the car. With the Apple Car Key, I could still open it.

I lost my car key at Six Flags and boy would I have loved to have this feature at that time.

Now I just need that BMW I always wanted.

For all the people wondering: UWB is specifically designed to prevent the relay attack, which is the only vulnerability keyless entry has. So the phone is in this case much more secure than the alternatives.

It's somehow funny to see you amazed that you don't need a key anymore as that's how I get into my tesla for years now.

This is the feature I miss the most, I bought a Tesla last year and after getting used to just having my iPhone in my pocket to open and drive off, I miss this when I bought a 2021 BMW X5 45e last May. Love that I can use my iPhone/Apple Watch to unlock and start the car but it's still not as easy as Tesla so this update will finally bridge that gap. I have shared my digital keys to family members who also have iPhone so the 2 key fobs that came with the car just stays home (have the NFC card in my wallet just in case, same with the Tesla NFC card).

also works for Apple Watch Series 5 and newer ;)

FYI, a LOT of MY2022 BMW models will be REMOVING BMW Digital Key/Apple CarKey because of the chip shortages. ughhhhhhhhh.
Same here in China. All BMW X3 series produced after June 15th no longer have CarKey functionality. Same reason as well.

It used to be that if your phone lost battery you couldn’t phone (and later on sms someone)… in those days I would keep several other’s phones and landlines in somewhere and in my head, people would lend their phones for a quick call or warning message.

Today if while outside a phone dies… can’t call, can’t pay, can’t map check for the closest phone shop if any, if there was a brief zoom/teams/etc call will miss it, the wallet passes, online mail receipt to pick up something and now can’t open the car and can’t start it. Left out many other tiny little things, like, dunno, groceries checklist.

I’m all down for keeping less things in the pockets but I think key functionality sooner or later will be backed up by some low energy week long lasting supply? Or able to passively be fed, like NFC chips on cards. It only takes an incident happening only once one day in a full year to be a day to remember.

You lose that phone and you will lose everything. I do believe is convenient to be able to open your car and pay for things with your phone WHEN you do not find your keys or your credit cards. But NEVER a way to replace them.

Always go out with your ID, Keys and everything else as usual.
Ya, but at least you can still vote in many states. 🤣

For all of you that think the power reserve is some magical fail safe that will work every time you need it? How many times have you found your phone/watch dead or almost dead from some random process running in the background? I trust power reserve about as much as I trust..... can't say it or I'll get a another warning.

I wonder what the ratio is of how many people in this thread think this is a great idea are the the same people that derided others for saying they (or another family member) lost an Apple TV remote? 😂

Oh the humanity... 😂

And if your phone is dead when you get back to your car after a party/sporting event/a concert/a night on the town?

Let me introduce you to an engeius product called "the AirTag".... 😉
It works even if your phone is dead, guy

I suppose you are just trolling, and if so, I guess you caught me :)

Each release has stated AND this particular article states that a vehicle can be unlocked 5 hours after your phone has gone dead. If you have let your phone go dead and then knowing you unlock/start your car with your phone, wait more than 5 hours to use your car, then I don't really think the technology is to blame here.

AirTags are great, not having to buy and use one to begin with is better.
