Ya, but at least you can still vote in many states. 🤣

For all of you that think the power reserve is some magical fail safe that will work every time you need it? How many times have you found your phone/watch dead or almost dead from some random process running in the background? I trust power reserve about as much as I trust..... can't say it or I'll get a another warning.

I wonder what the ratio is of how many people in this thread think this is a great idea are the the same people that derided others for saying they (or another family member) lost an Apple TV remote? 😂

Well as someone who has personally used the Power Reserve on MULTIPLE occasions, I believe in it. It is very strange that you have created this world in which a feature has a problem because if fits your point? Hardware problems don't work that way. You are just wrong.

PS. Why have I had to use it on multiple occasions? Backpacking when I didn't want to bring my heavier power brick. I will inevitably run out of power on our day coming back and then need to use it for transit. I have cash I could use if I need to, but the card always works, even when my phone was dead.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure modern day car keys are more at risk of ‘hacking’ than this new digital key…

You're not wrong.
Reminds me of my neighbor who insists things like Apple Pay can be hacked. He'll stick with writing checks and an ATM card with its PIN.
Keyless is about as safe as it gets right now. Doesn't mean one day it can't be compromised but right now its cutting edge security.

oh cool, extra steps to unlock my car. take out phone, double click power button, make sure face-id triggers.

as opposed to just grabbing the handle with the current keyless setup

That's absolutely not how this system works. It's not even how it works in the current format...

Currently: Take out phone, hold phone to door handle = Door Unlocked.
Or: Hold Apple Watch to door handle = Door Unlocked.

New system featured in this article: Walk up to car = Door Unlocked.

As Saladin12 mentioned that is not how it HAS to work. You also have the OPTION to make it more secure and require authentication. So you get to choose. If you want, you can make it work like the key that would be in your pocket/purse/bag/whatever where you don't take it out (Express Mode).....or you can have it work with an additional level of security requiring authentication before working. This new wonderful world we live in with choice!

I'm happy that your gambles have paid off so far, and that you've never had a phone or watch unexpectedly drain and die on you. Don't want to ruin your world but here in the real one they sometimes do. Hope you're ready for it when it does.

Are you implying that if a phone/watch drains and dies the power reserve (5 hours after the battery dies) ceases to function?

Because I fail to understand the scenario where a device dies so much that it depletes the reserve? I could be wrong though...

He is trying to create FUD to make a point so he can be "right". No gamble, clearly stated that I carried cash.

Also, our universe seems to revolve around chaos, so with that in mind I can't say that I would NEVER have the problem he is claiming I should worry about. However, in my personal (multiple) experiences, the technology has worked as designed 100% of the time. It is also true that the airplane that I am going to board could have a malfunction and crash and I could die. Does that stop me from flying because it is POSSIBLE? Nope. Does an airplane having a problem in a system mean ALL the functions of that system or the airplane as a whole will also fail? Nope. So just because your battery might drop rapidly doesn't mean the power reserve wouldn't work. I have had, like you and many others, my device unexpectedly die, and still have the power reserve work for my transit card

For 6 months I was looking for my Apple TV remote. My son had hid it in the little cubby on his toddler bike.

The “reserve” is controlled by software. It is not some “protected reserve” that can be controlled like a on carbureted motorcycle.

I had my phone setup to do a simple update last night. Something that’s been available since the beginning of iOS, failed on me. I’m not trying to create FUD Or cause some world disruption as you think I am. I’m stating the obvious. If you can’t handle/accept that then good luck to you. I hope that reserve works forever for you and no amount of battery degradation or software glitch ever affects you. I’m not asking you to get stuck somewhere.

There is a reason key fobs work the way they do. They are simple. They don’t have software failures. Batteries last forever in them, in both hot climates and in cold climates. Honda will never update your firmware in your fob to toast battery life. And years down the road when the battery does need replaced it takes about 2 minutes to do.

As I already stated, nothing is certain in life. You believe that your key fob is more reliable than the power reserve feature. Totally great for you to have that belief. But if the key fob is 99.99% reliable and power reserve is 99.89% reliable, then it doesn't really matter. I don't know the numbers, but neither do you. At this point you are simply stating that in life, we can't be certain of anything and using that argument as a way to cast doubt on a new feature that will be coming to millions of people around the world.

You disagree and that is ok with me. But your argument lacks context, it's not up to you and me. I would like to point out though that between you and me, I actually have personal experience with this. But that aside, you seem to be ignoring the fact that the largest (or near) company in the world will be bringing this to millions of people, that maybe your uncertainty is just based on the idea of it not working and not actual facts. Obviously the vehicle manufacturers, who also have millions of customers around the world who will use this feature don't have your same fear. Apple is all about the user experience and if their power reserve feature is as bad as you seem to think it is, then their brand is going to take a huge hit. But I am going to "bet" that they will continue to make sure this power reserve feature works as smoothly as it currently does, and it appears the car manufacturers are doing the same thing.

See that’s where you are wrong. I have personal experience of Apple software/hardware failing, you apparently do not.

Is Apple better than other companies? Yes they are, but people like you seem to be very forgetful or have selective memories. Four generations in to it there was an iPhone that had a bad antenna design. Cell phone design 101.

No matter what you say and how “proven” the technology is, you aren’t going to get me to leave the house without my truck keys. Hope you live close to a bus route.

LOL, I think you must, like me, love Ted Lasso and are acting like a goldfish and having a short memory. I have had Apple related software/hardware failures. I did mention those in our discussion. But I am not letting the fear dictate my life nor am I going to make fun of a feature because there is a chance of failure.

I am not claiming "proven" anything. You did in saying you believe in your keyfob. But my dad used to say the same thing about those! LOL

It's all perspective and the choice in how you are going to interact with technology. If you don't want to use it, no one is going to care. If you think it won't work, that is your opinion. But when you come to a public place and give your ideas, be ready for others to point out conflicting points of view.

In this case you are saying that your uncertainty on the reliability of the technology is so high that you make fun of people who would use it. Case in point "Hope you live close to a bus route". You are saying that you know better than Apple, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, GM, Hyundai, Etc... because all these people and companies just couldn't possibly develop a product that will not strand people without the ability to use their vehicle. You doubt the technology, which is fine for you, but when you come here, expect to have things like this pointed out because while you are trying to make others look silly you in fact make yourself look foolish by being so one-sided.

I do love Ted Lasso. First AppleTV show that was able to capture my attention.

It is not my intent to make fun of anyone. If that’s what you interpreted my responses as I apologize. If this technology were available on my truck I’d use it, but I wouldn’t rely on it to the point where I purposely leave my keys at home. I do some tech diving for fun, and by nature for “critical things” like this, where it’s easy to have a backup, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. To many it seems like overkill, but it’s kept me alive so far.
