It would look sexy next to a G5 iMac.

Given the size of it (& depth), I would assume that this early prototype ran just a touch version of the desktop OS at the time.

I'm surprised that no one has said this.

It look like the 1st Gen iPad was the original iPad mini. 40% smaller than a 12 inch display.

Just for the record. I don't think they'll make the iPad any smaller than it is now. Think 7.85 will be a step too far.

Go on apple prove me wrong :)

I guess this shows how far along Apple really is... Back in 2004 Apple conceived and tossed the idea of "perimeter venting":

And today Microsoft is touting a device that will have it soon:

I'm glad they made it smaller.

I wish they had kept it to a more usable 12" display myself, for adults anyway.
To a child 9.7" probably looks giant, but for an adult man the iPad is quite a small device.

Would you like the option of, lets day a 9.7" and 12" model to pick from, say $100 difference?

Same resolution as iPad3, just larger. I would.

its interesting to see what might have been. If only. We could have had an iPad/iSlate 8 years early, personally I don't think the market was ready at that time, since the iPad is very wifi oriented of which many places still lacked back then. if a certain location did have a wifi zone it was usually at a crawling 11mb/s. Its obvious why Apple waited, to perfect it that little bit more and get the iPhone out in the open. As well as waiting for the technology to catch up.

And to imagine, it would have had an actual hard drive in it, a la iPod! I wonder what the battery life would have been like had it actually been built back then.

You can expect more of this cool tech-historystuff as some judge decided that a lot of stuff that was filed under convidend 'evidence' by either Apple or Samsung, was considered not-so-secret at all.

If i can find the translated link of the trial, i'll post that :)

I wonder how long will it take for iPad 1/2/3 to look this outdated...

I dunno man. I personally think both exhibit a timeless quality. The prototype looks like a modern piece of technology (when we consider modern technology to be < 6 months old).

My mind

Because I used those discs to back my work up in about 1989 while at the Financial Times. At that time we were just moving into what we then referred to as, “New Technology” and the person responsible for sourcing the computers was an Apple Mac freak so we had Apple Macs.

I love seeing Apple prototypes, it just shows how apple waits for the right time to release there products.

well its very impressive as per those day's standard and very well designed, its very neat and would have easily gained popularity back then.

in those days laptops were like that and why wouldn't people want this.

i like it, it had a touch interface which was something very far from consumer technology back then

though internet usage was not that crucial like it is today which has solely made ipad popular, its the usage model for a particular product.

Apple has decent stuff coming from labs i gotta tell you.

Truly remarkable prototypes. Samsung to launch a 12 inch tablet next year?

12 inch screen makes sense, i can predict that the next ipad will be exact same size as that of a mb air 11 inch screen anything above that will be non-intuitive to use for things like touch typing n stuff, 11 inch is the bar.

it would also have to be remarkably lighter with decent enuf battery life, yeah i vote that sort of rumor
