Because at apple , we believe in profits and margins , and google was the only ones to pay us enough
Actually, ALL companies and businesses believe profits and margins to survive and grow. If they do not believe these, no businesses anywhere, no products and services, and we do not have anything for living unless we need to get anything we need ourselves, hunting in woods and planting for food, get water from rivers, building houses by ourselves etc.

These people make me regret buying Apple products. "We make Google be the default search engine because we've always thought it was the best," added Cue. "We pick the best one and let users easily change it."

In exchange for a dump truck full of money.

To get away from Google, I used to use DuckDuckGo, but I kept having to go back to Google to find what I needed. Since last year, however, I've used Kagi - and it's amazing.

To me, paying to have premium search with no ads is a no-brainer. For instance I love how you can rank up or down different sites. They also have interesting ideas surrounding "the small web".

I highly recommend everyone give it a shot! Especially if you're tired of ads and monopolies. (The extension works flawlessly, so you can set it as default on iOS/iPadOS as well.)

I have to agree with most here.

So he says they pick Google as it's the best.
Well that's fair enough.

So by that logic, Google should stop paying Apple, and of course Apple will still go with "the best"
Or without a payment would Apple then pick an alternative that's not the best for their users.

As has already been said, it's statement like this from those at Apple make me dislike them, and it's a shame as they don't have to come out with such lies.

anyone noticed how poor Google’s results actually are these days ?
- Automated answers which are either wrong , not relevant, or out of context.
-Impossible to narrow down more complex searches as it seems to simplify your search no matter what.
-Don’t trust it’s algorithm as it prioritises sponsored content massively.

Especially searching for illness related materials. Lots of junk info out there.

It’s fast , but I find it of limited value.

The future is AI (smarter results) and the ability to interact with it to refine.

I use DuckDuckGo exclusively. It works fine. Google works fine too. Once in a while I spot check by doing a Google search, just as fine as the DDG search I just did. However, DDG appears to be less invasive both on a privacy stance, and on a not bugging me on the screen stance. Google just wants in my business on its own search page and every website I want to anonymously visit. I cannot wait until Firefox's Facebook Container can do the same for Google. Maybe I just need to figure out how to use Firefox Multi-Account Containers...

Regarding this thing with Apple. Yes they get paid, so that part is a no brainer. However, if you point any novice to anything other than google for search they will think something is wrong. I'm the annoying guy trying to get everyone around me to use DDG, but they are fine with google.

I like that Apple give me the choice, and that sticks with my icloud backup when setting up a new phone. However, there should be a choice to fill in whatever search engine I want as well. Browsers should even have the option for no search engine if I so chose.

Still, has anyone here looked at the settings in Microsoft Edge? I just found like 10 new settings defaulted to on to "help me to personalize purchases" etc. etc. In Windows you CANNOT escape Bing without registry hacks. That OS I'm forced to use for work is an abomination.

Personally, I wish we had the ability to use any search engine as default in Safari. i.e. Brave search, which I've grown quite fond of. But I dont want to use Brave, I prefer Safari as a browser.

...but argued that the deal between the two companies requires Google to allow users to search without logging in...
As someone who uses Google search and doesn't want to have to sign in, I was always relieved, but surprised to find that this was still possible on Safari. Apparently I have Apple to thank for that privilege. Interesting.

Oh for the day when a similar article can be written about Google’s Voice Assistant.

I mean, how awful is Siri when she can’t speak the response to your query & instead tells you ‘here’s a link’. 🤦🏻‍♂️

What a lie, it’s a duopoly partnership on purpose, a.k.a cartel, there is no need to make Google the default browser search engine except for duopoly partnership purposes, simply as that.

Let the user choose on the first startup, and add a customizable search URL were users can pass the search variable to any search engine they prefer.

Money.

I hope this deal gets broken up. We need more search engine competition and Apple is just the company that could do it. Plus I’d love to see what Apple’s services revenue looks like without the billions from Google. Probably not pretty.

Exactly this.
That does not make sense. If Apple chose Google, because it is the best search engine, why would Google still have to pay billions of dollars to Apple then?
Blackmail - er, business negotiation. More than 50% of search traffic comes from IOS devices - Apple had them buy the balls with idle threats because ain't no one gonna Bing.

You either have:
1. no default and let the user choose - most of whom will choose Google anyway.
2. have a default (Google), and allow the user to change it.

#2 pays you billions of dollars and also happens to be the most popular search engine that users want anyway.

Apple doesn't sell user data to Google.
First you have to define the term data.
Yes, Apple does not sell the users owned data to google, but that way Apple „sells“ indirectly user statistics, preferences to Google, which helps Google to optimize their ad business, and attract more customers to their ad business. And with Apples browser engine dictation on iOS, and Google as the default search engine, it’s a duopoly with the sole purpose to anticompetitively control the mobile web browser and search engine market. That way newcomer search engines and browsers have zero chances to compete with Apple and Google, and thus the circle closes.

Duopoly/Cartel
