I read an article a couple weeks ago stating that Google owns about 90+% of the search engine market, so, it seems "appropriate" that Apple defaults to it ... that 90+% market share seems should be catching more attention by regulators than what Apple is doing ...

So if Apple does indeed choose Google as it is the best, what was Eddie's negotiating leverage that resulted in Google paying Apple wheelbarrow loads of money?

This sort of answer is frankly insulting and another example of the leaderships actions not matching with the words they spew out to customers. It's a politicians answer.

That does not make sense. If Apple chose Google, because it is the best search engine, why would Google still have to pay billions of dollars to Apple then?
Why wouldn't Apple want to get paid? Just because Google is the best search engine (others are quite good but not quite as good) doesn't mean Apple will do things for free.

Now Apple could not have a default and let you choose but Google gets 85+% of search engine traffic so most people would choose Google as default (some of that high use comes because Google is a default on many systems but it's also the default because provides good results).

Having Apple get paid by Alphabet Inc. to set Google as default is great business. Google makes money from searches and ads so it's smart for Apple to get money from them.

I don’t know how you can argue with that. There has to be one. If users are so excited to try other search engines, they have that option. I change mine after setting up, but I do tend to like Google results more.

You can't argue against the accuracy and completeness of Google search results. They continue to be King in that regard.

You, as a user, have ways to protect your privacy, while also leveraging the best of Google Search. Just use Private browsing windows. Then Google knows nothing about you when you do a search, other than your IP address. And if that is a concern, use a VPN. Problems solved... completely anonymous usage of Google. Been doing it this way for years.
Thanks. But… Subjectively, I don’t notice any meaningful difference now between google and DDGs results tbh. So I’d rather use DDG.

Sadly Google is the best. Of course due to data farming. But I still use duckduckgo as my primary as I don't need them to farm me for every search. But when I need something important and hard to find, I use google.

Up and running as fast as possible? Has Eddy Cue set up an iPhone in the past 5 years? There’s a plethora of intrusive nonsense in the way.

I have to agree with most here.

So he says they pick Google as it's the best.
Well that's fair enough.

So by that logic, Google should stop paying Apple, and of course Apple will still go with "the best"
Or without a payment would Apple then pick an alternative that's not the best for their users.

As has already been said, it's statement like this from those at Apple make me dislike them, and it's a shame as they don't have to come out with such lies.
Do you really expect him to say "We do it for the money"?

Think of the fee that Google pays Apple for default as reparations for photocopying iPhone back in 2007 with their CEO on Apple's board of directors. Android phone was a completely different thing before iPHone came out. It was blatant and Jobs wanted to go thermo-nuclear on them for just that.

Nah, Google just pays billions and the others don't.

Anyone can use Google search without logging in, so that's a really poor excuse.

I tried duckduckgo for a couple of months but it would randomly reset itself back to its default settings but I never clear cookies so i went back to google.

There is another reason that people often fail to think about...

If it wasn't Google, too many people would complain that they can't "Google" something. And Apple would rather not have to deal with helping the luddites change their settings over the phone or in-person, as it is a waste of resources.

To me, the choice popups are not the issue. It seems as the phones have gotten faster, the upgrade process has gotten slower with multiple pauses along the way. The two I hate is the verifying update and udating security settings.

Under oath in court? Yup. The fact they don't means no one should trust these guys. Their morals are as deep as their pockets.
MOST users prefer Google because it is the BEST search engine period. That was the truth. Being paid for it was a side benefit. Most users would be upset if they searched and it defaulted to ANYTHING ELSE, and Apple knows that. They didn't lie under oath.

This is business. Doesn’t matter what the actual value is, all about what you can get people to pay. And if there’s any company in the world that’s great at never leaving money on the table, it’s Apple.

"To change the iPhone's default search engine at any point after setup, users can simply [insert non-simple, multi-step process]"
If it were simple to change, Google wouldn't be paying so much to ensure that users are steered toward Google as the default. If it weren't about money, Apple could have a single screen during setup: "Choose a default search engine" with check boxes. But it IS about money, not user convenience.

Yeah I gotta admit he’s being a bit disingenuous there. Apple doesn’t miss the opportunity to push their own stuff during setup. I suppose you could say the line has to be drawn somewhere, you can’t give everyone every option during setup. But it’s telling what makes the cut and what doesn’t.

I use Bing for the award points.... I rack up enough points to get a $15 gift card to google every month easily, sometimes even $20. To be honest I can't say how Bing is better or worse than Google because I really haven't compared them in years. The only time I have used Google was if it was on someone else's computer and I never was thinking this better or this is a lot different than Bing.

What does Apple "push" during setup? FaceId, Apple Pay, Siri, which are integral to the iPhone. That's it. They don't have offers to download their office apps, they don't offer to sign you up for Apple Music, One, or anything. They are the least pushy. I'm fairly certain the competition load their phones with bloatware and many ads.

Not voluntarily but it would've been a good followup question e.g., would Apple still make Google search the default if Google didn't pay them many billions of dollars each year?

If the answer was "yes" then the next question would be, why does Google pay Apple many billions of dollars each year?
If the answer was "no" then the "it's the best" argument is potentially weakened.
