I'll say it: It took that many people two years to stretch the iPhone 4?

I know, overly simplistic, but come on. Now that the iPhone 5 design is perfect, what are all those people going to do now?

Wait. What? They deserve awards, but "best" of the past 50 years ?!?

Dieter Rams and Braun are one example of an arguably much more influential designer group over most of those decades.

Jon Ive himself has only been designing for twenty years and much of his work was heavily influenced by Rams.

Sounds more like an attempt on D&AD's part to get publicity.
Quite. My initial thought as well. Past decade, 15 years at a push, maybe. But in 1992 Apple was unveiling the MessagePad Newton. Ugh.

"...Last 50 years"? That is just cringeworthy PR puff.

Make the iPad smaller.

Largely male team — except for 2 females?

Why is that important? Do you not think those 2 females are on the team for their skills and own merits?

Can't we move past the old thinking of counting numbers vs. focusing on the merits of people or teams?

I hope the team flies on different airlines. One airplane accident, and the worlds greatest design team is wiped out.

And don't let Samsung know what plane they use. They would sneak in someone with a Galaxy Note 2 and turn it on during the flight making the plane crash.

Have you heard this one? 15 white guys and two token women walk into a secret design studio :(

You left out the Asian. ;)

I think it has something to do with the fact that (right or wrong) they're been recognized by DandAD more than any other company. At least that's how I interpreted the award.

So only designers by trade can know what good design is? Isn't that a bit snobbish?

You're right - you don't have to be a professional designer to know about design. I just mean the people who post here about design with an authoritative tone. You'd think they're all designers but I doubt most or even half of them are.

How about none of them?

It's like advertising. People look at a print ad or watch a tv spot and think they could have done that... all the while being clueless about the process which drives the end result.

For what? Being a copy cat?

Note copy cat? Is this the new standard reponse "they copied everything from apple"

As if (to keep it on topic) apple never closely looked at braun and its designs and copied those 1 on 1 .

Its not because apple is beter at copying they arent copying.

No awards for the design teams from Samsung for their gorgeous products?? *sarcasm*

Plenty to go around. Samsung usually gets the most number of awards for Innovation at CES every year, and Design awards from other countries' versions of the D&AD.

Interestingly, for 2012, D&AD gave a Product Design award to the Nokia N9, not the Galaxy or iPhone:

As for their "co-ordinated outfits" (leaving aside the fact they look like sombre cabin crew), just be thankful they weren't in matching Miyake turtle necks. Jobs tried that company policy let's not forget.

I'm thankful that Jon doesn't still wear velour jumpsuits, or whatever the heck it was he used before he re-invented his own look:

Black always looks good. New Yorkers know it. Most sensible people know it. Save the gaudy and frilly, attention-seeking crap for people like Lady Gaga.
I bet that is no coincidence... I'm pretty sure Sir Jony has designed their suits, choosen the fabric, the buttons, the shirts so they all look like a team, a design team, or better said, Apple's design team ;)

Can you imagine on the contrary a bunch of geeks with in ill-fitting pants and knitted pullovers?? :D No way :)

Samsung should do the same for the galaxy note designers, its a far more elegant design than the iphone 5.

What, fly them all over for an award they didn't win?

Well, that would be a pretty cool publicity stunt, wouldn't it? It would help expose the lies and conspiracy that led to Apple winning this award when their competitors clearly have better designed products.

I don't know, you can't tell me that's the entire design team. I get the feeling that is the team managers and not the designers themselves. There ages do not reflect what I would expect to be a significant age variation if it was the entire team.

so how long have you worked there?

Wake the hell up. What I was implying is that there need to be more females.
I didn't expect the product design industry to (also) be male-dominated.
