Hmmm, did I see some speculation somewhere that current MBP's firmware chip doesn't have enough memory to hold that "internet recovery"...?I'm sure Apple will issue a firmware update with 10.7.1 or so, to enable networked restore.

I know nothing about the issue, but that certainly seems plausible. I mean Apple uses pretty fancy firmware interfaces, and this would require some real code too, so...seems plausible.
I still think the idea of that is cool, as a possible last ditch thing...but it doesn't replace the need for disks![]()
flash drive installation option if you've already purchased Lion from the app store. All you have to do is buy an 8GB flash drive from Best Buy or somewhere.
Need for "internet recovery" appears when you have blank hdd in your mbp. Then it doesn't help that EFI can read the blank hdd.Unlikely that firmware space is an issue - UEFI (the "E" stands for "Extensible") can load firmware code from the hard drive, from a USB key,....
Typically, one would not put the actual recovery code in firmware - too hard to update. Since "recovery" just asks for your WiFi info, apparently it gets all the recovery code from Apple.
Does "internet recovery" with mini or air need that hidden partition from hdd/ssd?Yeah, though that doesn't help for new Macbook Airs or Minis...at least I assume it doesn't?

Same thing for usb; if you have installation usb, you don't need "internet recovery", since you can install from usb, but if you don't have that usb, you probably don't have that internet recovery code in your usb.
I guess there's reason why they can give $69 usb sticks now for free:

All this mess just because they have to maintain the front that "optical is dead".
Sounds pretty stupid, when you could just include a dvd with a laptop that costs 2 grands or more and already has that old fashioned optical drive.Anybody wants anymore easy and simple ways to save your customers from needless trouble? In the past this was called service.
Just wondering how the legal side goes, if you have purchased mbp just before Lion was pre-installed and the licence to download Lion is included in the purchased package. How can you resell that package as whole if Lion update has been done from AppStore?
Windows 7 is amazing in the windows world, but I think we can all agree it would make a poor replacement for OS X. The value of a glass of water in the desert is far greater than in the middle of the sea.![]()
OS X isn't drastically better than Windows 7
Speak for yourself. You certainly don't speak for me so your whole post is moot.
Huh? Your post makes no sense.
What's the point of your post again?
Was I even responding to you?

Not to mention it's entirely personal preference. I like Windows quite a lot more than OS X, but I accept there are people who really prefer OS X.
When you state something that is your opinion like it's fact you're speaking for others. Like saying "OS X isn't drastically better than Windows 7"
If you want to make bold statements that speak for other people then be prepared to hear something back.
Next time try.. IMO OS X isn't drastically better than Windows 7. Otherwise you're making a blanket sweep.
Does anyone know when Apple Stores will be getting the Macbook Pros with Lion pre-installed and the tweaked keyboards? I am looking to get a Macbook Pro 15" and I want to wait until it comes preloaded.
I would buy it online but I plan on buying it in Delaware tax free when I am passing through there for a planned business trip at the end of August. I hope they get it by then
Call them in advance. I did that back in 2007 when I wanted to buy a MacBook and they were making the Tiger to Leopard transision.
I got my Leopard MacBook (with terrible intel graphics, but that's another story)

Still nobody knows?Does "internet recovery" with mini or air need that hidden partition from hdd/ssd?
Still nobody knows?
Or with MBP?
