They make 2 versions. A battery operated one, and a hardwired one. The hardwired one is only powered from the transformer and existing doorbell wiring from your house. There is no battery inside.

And to prove my point, you can’t even connect a traditional mechanical chime to the wired version of the Ring. People have tried, but it’s physically impossible because it’s missing the required internal parts. But you can connect a mechanical chime to their battery operated doorbell. And this works for the reason you stated, about circuits being broken.

The wired Ring video doorbell connects wirelessly over the internet to chimes you plug in your house. So when you press the doorbell, it doesn’t complete a circuit. It just sends an alert over the internet to your chimes and smartphone. It’s completely different than a regular doorbell.
I think you're referring to the video one, the 'pro' does still have a small battery from what I can tell (b/c it does work with the chime...). In any case, the point is the vast majority if 'hard-wired' doorbells (which use the chime) DO have batteries and many seem unaware about this~

Right. The version of the pro with a rechargeable battery works with a chime, and the wired version of the pro, which doesn’t have a battery, can’t work with a mechanical chime.

The original post I was replying to said that smart doorbells have a battery, and my only point was that not all of them do. There are some that just connect straight to the AC power and continuously run, just like how you can plug a TV or stereo in and have them run constantly.

I think we had a misunderstanding. You were talking about doorbells that connect to a mechanical chime. I was talking about smart WiFi doorbells.
