If it was stolen from his car, it must have been in "sleep" or "shutdown" mode. And in either case, the laptop could not be accessed if it was password protected. SO whether it's a day or a year later, it should not be able to be used. And if it can't be used, why would the thief keep the laptop plugged-in/charged up?
Find My only works once the device is powered on, 'online', and logged into an apple account— which would be impossible with a password protected Mac. (Especially after theft once the owner 'locks' the device.)
Did the thief have his laptop password?
