Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney today commented on Apple's Find My service, referring to it as "super creepy surveillance tech" that "shouldn't exist."

Sweeney went on to explain that several years ago, "a kid" stole a Mac laptop out of his car. Years later, Sweeney was checking Find My, and as the Mac was still connected to his Apple ID account, it showed him the location where the thief lived.

Sweeney's take is curious, because providing the location of a lost or stolen device is exactly what the Find My service is meant to do. Apple devices remain tied to a user's account if not removed, a feature that is meant to thwart theft.

After confusion from his Twitter followers over his comments, Sweeney said that the location of a device in someone's possession can't be tracked without tracking the person, and "people have a right to privacy." He claims that detection and recovery of a lost or stolen device should be "mediated by due process of law" and not exposed to the device owner "in vigilante fashion."

When Sweeney saw how Find My worked, he said he turned off the feature on all of his devices.

While Apple's AirTag item trackers have been criticized for their use by stalkers, the Find My service has not been the target of similar complaints. Find My and Activation Lock have been important theft deterrents, cutting down on iPhone theft. Apple recently expanded Activation Lock to include iPhone components to prevent them from being disassembled for parts.

This really proves that Time Sweeney is an idiot.

This is one of those situations where he thought something that must have seemed a lot smarter in his mind that what came out.
I have never had someone track their stuff in my house.
It helps if you don't steal other people's stuff. That's my trick.

So Sweeny is more focused on The Thief’s right to privacy than his own. If you’re a thief and have access to a laptop using an Apple ID the thief would also be able to see the rest of sweeny’s devices.

Sounds like a good way to target Apple devices for theft and tracking Tech executives.

This guy continues to be insanely delusional. Wealth has seemingly only made him more. It's almost sad, he can't see past his blind rage (for a company) and says ridiculous stuff like this.
Money doesn’t fix your problems, it usually just magnifies them.
wait, what?...

If it was stolen from his car, it must have been in "sleep" or "shutdown" mode. And in either case, the laptop could not be accessed if it was password protected. SO whether it's a day or a year later, it should not be able to be used. And if it can't be used, why would the thief keep the laptop plugged-in/charged up?

Find My only works once the device is powered on, 'online', and logged into an apple account— which would be impossible with a password protected Mac. (Especially after theft once the owner 'locks' the device.)

Did the thief have his laptop password?
Did the thief also have his Apple account login?

there ALOT wrong with that story
ugh
Exactly. Why does the thief have this laptop still? The whole idea of find my and icloud lock is so a stolen device is worthless, making theft in the first place a deterrent. If he can still see the perp’s location, that means the “kid” has kept it running in its current worthless state. This just feels suspect to me.

Everyone here basically thinks he's a moron. And yet...

The article, and even more so every person commenting here, are all giving him free publicity. Have none of you ever heard of "there's no such thing as bad publicity"?

lol I’ve had to read this several times and his logic doesn’t make sense to me!

Amazing he has such a successful career with comments like that

“…you can't track the location of a device that's in someone's possession without tracking that person…”

Pray tell, what’s the solution to this? Anyone?
I think he found the solution to the world’s biggest problem when it comes to retrieving stolen devices while respecting the privacy of thieves but it’s still under pending review for formalities and completeness by the patent process overview committee 😂🤣

tldr, a -CEO-'s laptop is stolen, he does nothing about it, later complains that he has the ability to locate his stolen property and cant figure out how to turn off find my.

dude needs help.

leaves his laptop in a car.
laptop is stolen (duh)
does nothing about the theft (still connected to his apple id... what?)
thief uses laptop
ceo opens find my at some point in the future, sees the laptop that got stolen is *gasp* being used.
presumably ignores that all if his other devices show up in find my also
decides to tweet to no one about how he cant figure out how to disable find my and not participate?

the **** did i just read

Imagine being a hack like Tim Sweeney doing mental gymnastics justifying how criminals should have privacy from the victim they robbed using the very same stolen goods! Looters and BLM rioters now know where to go if they want to rob a billionaire without consequences!

“Shaka, when the walls fell.”

Alright... let the betting start.

What has he stolen that he doesn't want to get caught with? Or does he not want his family see where he is?

Mistress of Stolen property? What are we thinking?

I love the Find My feature; we even use it as a family... my wife and 2 kids can all see each other and know where they are. I love the fact that I can see if they got to school safely and they can see when I am on my way home.

This almost seems unreal. Since when is it not ok to track down your stolen items? It seems the left has given the crooks and illegals more rights than good law-abiding citizens. I just can't get my reasonable head around this. I track all my items of value.
This comment really really bothers me, and I know it shouldnt...look, im no fan of the far left either but the fact this story immediately illicits this kind of response is exaclty why there is so much division in the world today. This has nothing to do with politics, its just a dumb CEO saying very dumb things...nevermind the fact that Sweeney probably identifies closer to whatever the opposite of "the left" is in your mind.

This guy is unfortunately mental.

If Apple wins their case in US, they need to file a permanent restraining order also from allowing Epic and Sweeney from ever developing for Apple or ever owning an Apple product. At this point this is downright harassment and defamation that is simply untrue.

Why is an article like this even newsworthy on an Apple tech blog. Sounds like its sole purpose is to stir up negativity once again. Why does the CEO of a game company, a mere gnat flying around Apple’s rear sphincter, get this kind of attention? Amid all the “fire Cook” nonsense we now have this piece of trash sounding off. Sweeney is an AI ripoff of Elon Musk in my opinion.

I knew he was full of it this whole time, he’s just a hater.. I just can’t believe people actually supported him with the whole 3rd party App Store case and 30% Tax complaining
