Hilarious indeed given that Dutch refers to the Netherlands and not Denmark.Does apple even do enough business in Denmark to justify these fines?
Would be hilarious if they just stopped formally operating in the country lol

You can already do this by using a Mac, Xcode, and the source code for the application. This doesn't end until Apple is forced to allow people to install whatever applications they want, without needing to go through the App Store to do so.
So either you use Apple's in-app purchase system or do a lot of extra work and paper work to use an alternate payment system. The only real alternative is in-app purchase, since the monthly PITA book keeping ain't worth the hassle. No wonder ACM ain't amused. To get the reduced fee, Apple is requiring developers to maintain separate app binaries for apps that use third-party payments and it is asking developers to submit monthly records of sales so that applicable commission can be tracked.
The ACM is not pleased with Apple's decision to force dating apps to choose between using the standard in-app purchase system or an alternative payment system, and has said that dating apps must be able to offer both options, leading to the series of fines.
Y'all know that Apple stuff already cost a lot more in Europe than it does in 'Merica, right? Jack up the price any more and you'll be seeing a lot of people buying iPhones in the US and sending them to friends in Europe. My wife's cousin in Old Country wants us to buy them the latest iPad and ship it to them. It's 30% cheaper than buying directly from Apple in Old Country.Could Apple simply raise the price of all it's products and App store apps sold in this country to cover the imposed fines?
As a FYI, 10 years ago the Netherlands sex industry was 5% of their GNP. The numbers of employed exceeded 25,000. Then Covid 19 hit and of course this industry suffered. The 30% store cut is likely seen as harmful to its recovery from the pandemic, and impacting revenue that Netherlands collects. IMHO they don't need dating apps whatsoever, just use the web and leave apple out of it."Dating" apps is a polite term for legal prostitution, which the Netherlands does not want to share the revenue with Apple.
Apple the 30% pimp
I wouldn’t call cessation if operations in a country complying.
Let the politicians sweat when their voters can’t buy pretty iPhones in Denmark anymore.
Tbh apple only has 23% market share in the EU in general. Begs the question as to if some of these markets are worth the regulatory headaches.
Seriously, with war returning to Europe and a resolution far from clear, my guess is voter's concern over the function of their smartphones ranks about 47th on their list of priorities.I don't know about you and I can only speak about myself. I don't care one way or other if I can't buy iPhone anymore if such regulations comes through.
I am not going to vote againest someone because I can't buy iPhone. What a big deal.
$5 million per week for Apple is like $0.01 to us.
Or maybe they have a plan that you are not privvy to?If Apple keeps acting like a petulant child, it might be time to ramp this up.
Add a couple zeros and they'll start to "care"
I agree, but obviously this legislation is important to the EU lawmakers. However, the posters in this thread seemingly care about the function of their smartphones and have opinions as to the veracity of this legislation.Seriously, with war returning to Europe and a resolution far from clear, my guess is voter's concern over the function of their smartphones ranks about 47th on their list of priorities.
That would be hilarious — Apple stopping operations in Denmark for what the Netherlands did. Super hilarious!Does apple even do enough business in Denmark to justify these fines?
Would be hilarious if they just stopped formally operating in the country lol
Never going to happen. Epic already lost that war. Sorry. This doesn't end until Apple is forced to allow people to install whatever applications they want, without needing to go through the App Store to do so.
No, if they cared, they would be trying and succeeding to comply. If that were the case they wouldn't be trying (and failing) to comply.
That's fine if people here care, but to act like it will be at the forefront of more than a negligible number of voter's minds is laughable.I agree, but obviously this legislation is important to the EU lawmakers. No actually because Apple is trying to get as close as possible to the line without going over it. Unfortunately, much like the miscalculation of another powerful figure in the world, Cook's judgement of where the line is at is clearly off the mark. Of course we'll see Apple try to comply again, perhaps hitting the mark next time. If Apple didn't mind the fines, they wouldn't even be trying. No, if they cared, they would be trying and succeeding to comply.![]()
Right, if I were Apple I’d ban these apps as they encourage pornography/prostitution/sex trafficking and are against App Store guidelines. Can’t see the Dutch government supporting apps that have that connotationIs stop allowing dating apps at all in The Netherlands App Store a possible solution? Otherwise other categories of apps and other countries will foliow to milk the Apple cow…
Nah, they’ll never hit the mark. Their “tries” are mere theater so that if they’re called to task, they can say they tried but it’s toooooooo difficult. No actually because Apple is trying to get as close as possible to the line without going over it. To what end? Saying they tried when apparently, according to you at least, it's so obvious they're not really trying, isn't going to stop the fines. So what's the point in their "theater."Nah, they’ll never hit the mark. Their “tries” are mere theater so that if they’re called to task, they can say they tried but it’s toooooooo difficult.![]()
No, imo, they are trying to see what the line is, so they don't have multiple versions of the app store with multiple regulations and functionality across countries. Cook is guiding apple to do what it needs to do so the ios ecosystem as destroyed as it will be, won't be fractured. No actually because Apple is trying to get as close as possible to the line without going over it. Countries have the right and the responsibility to create regulations that their constituents want.I wouldn’t call cessation if operations in a country complying.

That's kind of the same thing I said. Cook is trying to find the line. The only difference is that my reasoning for Apple trying to get right up to the line is because $$$. For you, it's Cook trying to not fracture iOS. Of course they could adopt the same changes everywhere that the Netherlands is forcing on them so as to not fracture iOS, but of course that conflicts with maximum $$$. So we're saying the same thing, but you take an extra step to get there. No, imo, they are trying to see what the line is, so they don't have multiple versions of the app store with multiple regulations and functionality across countries.
