I am still using it today. I only have about 400 charging cycles and it runs flawless. I put BigSur on it and it’s fast. I actually prefer to work on it even though I got a Brand new dell computer from work.

i am waiting for a slight redesign and bigger screen that isn’t too big so I keep being like I waited so long, I might as well hold out a little longer and then go all in
A few months ago the trackpad on my MBPr 15” mid-2014 (bought Dec 2014 refurbished from Apple) started to feel harder to press the button. A couple of days ago I noticed the case bulging .. so opened it up and yep the battery cells were all horribly blown-up. So following ifixit I eased the old battery out (its now securely stored awaiting recycling) and am awaiting a ~$50 replacement battery as I love the machine and want to keep it going as long as possible.

Whilst cleaning its interior I noticed how beautiful the layout was and how even the add on modules have the same black circuit board colouring.

One thing I do miss on the MBPr compared to the previous unibody MBP (my 2009 one is still in use and had a new battery last year) is the little ‘flowing’ battery status leds and front ‘breathing’ led ... minor things but great functional design.

I am eyeing up the new M1 machines and may finally be tempted to extend my Apple family with a new laptop and/or another mac mini.

This was an amazing machine. Some of my family are still using it and it is still useful. Retina display, long battery life, and ports, glorious ports including the ubiquitous and very useful USB-A, not to mention HDMI, SD card. Truly a pro machine.

Why does Apple force people to throw their perfectly good laptops in the trash. Do they really hate the environment?

They don't. If you choose to throw your perfectly good laptop in the trash, that's on you.

I still have a PowerBook laptop from 1992. Though I no longer use it, it boots up and works just fine. Ditto with a mid-90s Pismo laptop. And a Mac IIci.

I recently sold a 2012 non-Retina MBP I’d bought used. Mostly because 1280x800 was horrible to look at in this day and age, and it was quite heavy. Performance was still ok, though.

Guess I should have gotten a used Retina one instead

Obselete today but it’s been ‘vintage’ for some time. Apple refused to even look at mine over 2 years ago. Come to think of it, mine may even be a 2013 model.

Still, great machines that outshone the competition at the time.

We still got ours! My 15", my partner's 13", still going strong. <3
hoping to move to the Apple Silicon later this year, I'm expecting quite a bump in performance.

No. Thats true. I still have and use my 2000 Powerbook Pismo, 1GB, G4 upgrade, 240GB SSD, superbright screen, airport, firewire, leather coating and just drop dead gorgeous. Last battery from 2016, running OSX and Linux.
There is nothing, past, present, future, that comes close to this antique.
should run at a snails pace looking at my other machines. But you would be surprised.
Obsolete? My foot.
Sounds like a BDSM MacBook with an 🍎 in its mouth.

The fact that these computers last this long is impressive. Every windows laptop I’ve ever owned had to be replaced after 2 years because of some sort of internal catastrophic failure. Still rocking my 2012 rmbp
Same cannot be said for the 2016 MBP crop.

My bff still uses the same one too and sees no reason to update and miss all the ports.

What an exciting computer that was, especially the first retina 15" MacBook Pro. It was mind-blowing. You just wanted to show that screen around. I don't think I've been excited about a Mac again ever since :(

Still using mine every day today. Have refreshed the battery and SSD, the rest is as-is. Can't and won't replace it due to the near-portless wonders on offer, hoping for a decent version to be released this year.

Getting closer to the day my early 2013 MBPr 15” hits that list.
Still going remarkably strongly, although tge 16G RAM limit is getting to be more of an issue these days, and the battery lasts less than 30 minutes but I just keep it on mains so all is good.
Be nice to put Big Sur on it but sadly it can’t.

Should still serve me well until a nice new M series Mini or iMac with 32GB comes out.

This machine was the beginning of the end of Pro upgradeable machines (the true beginning was the original MBA).

Many remember this machine fondly, but for me it signaled the end of Mac purchases and ushered in what I consider the dark years at Apple (2012-2019).

That said, the Macs I purchased before this machine was released carried me through those years, and now even (always) non-upgradeable iPads are at a point where they serve my (home) computing needs.

In that time I've also come to reluctantly accept that my days of adding RAM and/or storage to my laptop are behind me, never to return.

Truth is that the moment the new iPad Pros are released will be the moment when the Mac itself becomes obsolete in my house.

I'm typing this message on this exact model. I estimate that it runs at around 97% of what it did at day 1. Exceptional product. I'll be purchasing one of the new iMac's when they're released, but I will certainly keep my MBP.

I have to think of my 2014 and 2015 models and replacing the batteries. I don't need to replace them right now but it would extend the life for at least 7 years. The benefit would be to the next owners though. I plan to replace one of them with an M1X MacBook Pro but will keep one around for Intel and 32-bit programs that don't run well on Apple Silicon.

Same here, I only get about 20 mins on a "full" charge but it's a homebody machine now anyway... I'm hopeful for the summer as well.
My wife has the same one and can still get few hours before dying...never would I've imagined this from a PC!
