After doing my first pickup - my iPhone in 2022 and seeing how crowded it always is, I was mystified about why a pickup station was not already established in every Apple Store years ago.

I came in needing to collect a device that I had paid over $1000 for and unless I can get the attention of an iPad-clutching employee who then directs you to some vague section to wait, I'm in the same category as people passing time mooching around the mall, pawing at the phones on the benches.

It's a company that relies on and directs you to online orders!

Why just now?

Apple has a new home at Canada's second-largest indoor shopping mall. Following months of construction, the new Apple Square One retail store opened its doors today in Mississauga, Ontario, just west of Toronto. The store is now located above the Food Central food court on the second floor of the mall, across from Sephora.

The store's first visitors were greeted with a round of applause from Apple's team members. MacRumors reader Kyle attended the grand opening and shared photos with us, providing a first look at the curved glass facade and expansive interior.

On the positive side, the new store is much larger than Apple's previous location in the mall, which was often overcrowded. The original store closed its doors for good on Thursday evening, after nearly 15 years of serving customers. Another plus is that the store is the first in Canada to offer a dedicated Apple Pickup station where customers can conveniently collect their online orders placed on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app.

On the negative side, the store lacks some of Apple's latest retail design elements that were first introduced last year at the relocated Apple Tysons Corner in Virginia and all-new Apple Battersea in London, England, such as a Genius Bar with varied table and seating heights for improved accessibility, and an Apple Watch Studio for mixing and matching case and band combinations. Customers can still receive hardware support from a Genius at the store, and participate in free creative sessions through the Today at Apple program.

The new Apple Square One is the company's fourth modern store in Canada, alongside Apple Fairview and Apple Eaton Centre in Toronto, and Apple Pacific Centre in Vancouver. All of Apple's other stores in Canada have a classic design. A leaked document last year revealed that Apple has considered relocating its Sainte-Catherine store in Montréal, Québec as early as 2025, but the company has not publicly confirmed these plans.

"Come say hello," says Apple, on the Apple Square One page. "We can't wait to see you there."

Yeah, but you’d have to go to Mississausage. I’d rather get whatever delivered.

While there is much to be said for a clean living space, I (and I think most people) will feel more relaxed in a space that is filled with our stuff.
Filled… no. Some… yes. I hate clutter. I’d rather have a clean, open environment with only the bare necessities. But, alas, my significant other loves her “stuff”.

They should have those pickup stations at every Apple Store. It’s so tedious and confusing picking up an item at their stores.

I check in by the front entrance then they proceed to tell me to stand by the third table on the left. I get there and I’m just waiting around thinking, “Okay, I’ve checked in by the front entrance, so someone will bring my equipment.” Well, not so much. I had to check in again with the person by the third table on the left. It was so freaking confusing.

A simple pickup took far too long because it wasn’t clear what to do. A person shouldn’t have to ask questions about a pickup.
I agree completely. Every time I have gone to an apple store since they took away the register, its been a pain to do anything. Buying a computer when I already know what I want doesn't require I talk to someone to tell me what I want. Even picking up an order has taken 20-30 minutes because no one is available at my allocated time. The last time they skipped over me multiple times since there is no clear "picking up an order" area and the person who was initially helping me went on a lunch break...at 5 PM, without telling anyone.

I understand the idea behind the concept, but its demeaning to your customer base that you assume they are all unable to make a decision without their expertise. I've just switched to going to Best Buy to look at and buy Apple products.

Yep, that’s been my experience as well. It’s far too complex and annoying. I just want my equipment then leave. But they make it hard to do just that.

Having a dedicated pickup zone makes sense. When I last picked up something I had bought online the service was surprisingly far from seamless.

I remember Tim Cook going on about how much sitting is the new cancer and removed seats from common areas at the apple campus
Maybe he was insisting on no seats in apple car 😂

Its worse for you back to have to lean down and hunch over… the tables are too low to comfortably use standing.

Which conveniently helps prevent people from hanging around in any one place too long tying up the demo units.

I am a long-time Apple fan and will continue to be in the future. But the new Apple store experience kind of bugs me. It used to be I could walk in and buy something. Now there are at least a couple employees directing traffic, then you get to a table with a specialist, but then they need to refer to someone else for an actual purchase. No one can get out of their box, so you often have several just standing around. Gets kind of tiring.
