We don't have student loans in Australia like the US does. University is paid for by the government here and you pay back the debt only when you earn above a certain threshold (around $52k/yr). They they just keep 4% of your tax return each year until it's paid off.

Also, it's Exam time for most universities last week/this week. If they had time to wait in line, chances are they aren't students.

I'm going with rich kids.
Curious. Is there an official link to this program? What's there to stop you from leaving the country after you graduate?

Hello Apple Marketing Team Member. ;)
LOL. Nah, I got a 6S less than a year ago and definitely won't be changing for a couple of years.

Kinda the opposite of an Apple Marketing team member!

New Zealand is the same. To a degree.

Boom boom.

Right...They are clearly going to re-sell those iPhones for a profit. Scalping is common for launch days outside Apple Stores. Those students are laughing at the money they just made off of Apple.

Nothing. It used to be called HECS, it's now called HELP (Higher education loan program). If you don't earn the threshold on your taxable income you don't have to pay it back. Foreign income earned while working overseas is not taxable in Australia, so you basically get free university. It's a stupid system.

Great the iPhone 7 is out. I couldn't care less personally but the darn thing is finally out there hooray, yippee, doing cartwheels in the street (not). Mankind is saved once again.

Now can we please move on to far more important products such as new Macs.

Does these "just hurry up and release new Macs!" comments annoy anyone else, or...

It's an article about the iPhone, why bother commenting that here?

Lining up for the release was a fun thing before but now it became ugly and unattractive. Scalpers are everywhere.
That picture in the article makes me sick.

At some point you can only produce so many widgets with the available time and resources. You then have to allocate various models to each launch country to please as many customers as possible. There will always be problems at this scale of production and level of demand which is massive. I think they do a pretty job.

They have enough stock. Apple purposefully holds back just a little to magically inflate the demand by tricking buyers into thinking that supply is low.

Sure there will be some bad PR with this kind of strategy and I think the debacle with the iPhone upgrade program and the class action lawsuit might just bite them in the ass with this tactic

Did the article say "Australian Students" or just "Students." Maybe from another part of the world just on vacation.

That would be even sadder...

"What did you do on your vacation in Sydney?"

"We stood in a line outside an Apple store for several days to get the new iPhone, in colours and the size that we didn't want."

Maybe visiting family or live in Australia and study abroad.

Well that sucks. These guys camped out and didn't even get the phone they wanted. Since no pluses are in stock I bet a lot of people will be disappointed.

With rumored goals of selling 100 million of the thing this year I highly doubt that.

Students from Sydney.
Maybe the iPhone is payment for a passing grade or maybe failing school and figure it's better to get the 15sec of fame and sell or destroy these phones on YouTube. Either way it's sad.

If there is such a supply limitation on the Plus model, why didn't Apple just wait another month to launch it? So now there will be a few people who get the phone, but most will be disappointed...I don't get it. Yeah they have their yearly release schedule -- but this just seems like they messed up. With a supply chain master as CEO, you'd think they would have been a bit more prepared...
Don't let yourself be mislead.

Apple knows exactly what they're doing. Years of experience, billions of dollars, and people actually believe Apple wasn't prepared.

Only the cult like Apple Devotees belive that nonsense...

I was the first Apple Watch Series 2 Customer in the world!

I was at the Sydney Apple Store picking up my iPhone 7 and picked up an 42mm SS Apple Watch with Sport Band (to replace my current Apple Watch).

I was told I was the first person in the world to buy an Apple Watch Series 2. They tried to get some of the press interested in my purchase, but they were all focussed on the iPhone.

My possible 5 minutes of fame all went ignored and I walked out without anyone even noticing.

It was fun buying my new Apple Watch with my existing Apple Watch too.

Heh, or the answer could be "we scored the iPhone 7, flipped it on ebay, and the profit paid for our Sydney vacation and then some!"

Now that is douchey.

When did Apple start caring about rich kids feelings. Steve's Apple would have just told them "too bad. Try again later." Tim is like "oooh nooooo...feelings!" And why $100? That seems awfully high! How about a $25 iTunes card? $100!?!? That is just crazy. Who cares if you were the stupidest person on the planet with no life and waited outside the Apple Store for days? You need a reality check....not a $100 reward.

According to the Apple Store...my iPhone SE was the first to have a screen replacement in New England (possibly the country). It was the first day. Not sure how I feel about that.

People didn't get their first choice made a compromize. Let that be a lesson in life. If you make enough compromizes, you aren't living your own life story but instead just following orders. These customers need to learn the power of the word "NO" or grasp the concept of waiting a few weeks to get their desired model or color. No one gives a ---- whether you got a first iPhone.
Life is filled with tradeoffs.

If you want to wait until your desired model becomes available, that means that many weeks or even months of waiting, so it's not as through your alternative is entirely free of opportunity costs.

These kids have made their choice. Let's respect them for it.

That's sad they weren't interested, it could be a much better story in the news.
