They are only doing this to keep people from being able to easily swap out the batteries themselves which would dig into their margins and profits.

Why can’t people see that?

Wouldn’t you rather be able to easily be able to swap out your battery than this?
Because the overwhelming majority of people don’t want to open and access the inside of their devices, so it wouldn’t dig into their margins and profits.

No. Water resistance is way more useful. Wet environments are far more common for me than the need for a new battery.
 
The only reason they are doing this is to avoid the EU Regs requiring them to make the batter replaceable by the end user, if the device in question is water proof it is exempt from the regulation... So I imagine it was far cheaper for Apple to develop and make this then it was to make a user replace battery. Anyway what will be more interesting is the price increase they give it.

Apple devices already meet the exemptions, a device battery does not need to be easily replaceable if it can maintain 80% battery health after 1000 cycles.

Sadly I feel this is going to be priced too high for my liking. The mini 7 was already bad value versus the rest of the ipad lineup. Hope I'm wrong as I'd like to upgrade to OLED but if this starts at 699 I'll be looking at near 1000 for an ipad mini with cellular and other upgrades. That's too rich for me for a small media consumption device.
 
I think there's an R&D motive to this move -- the inevitable giant-foldable-as-laptop form factor cannot include traditional speaker-holes tech; so this no-holes tech is a necessity.

Do they though???.... or is that software manipulation by Apple printing false readings, a company who deliberately disabled iPhone performance once batteries reached a certain health without advising the owner, nor the Apple employees advising the user when they took it in instead advising the owner to buy a new iPhone..... leading to mass class action lawsuits against them and government fines globally..

Yes I am being cynical, but, considering Apples history on battery performance and software manipulation you will forgive me if I have such cynicism.

I know it is hard to believe, but there are people and businesses that buy these for professional use, such as restaurants or construction companies. Those users have needed waterproof iPads for ages.

How have they been getting by for 16 years without it?

Thank you. So many people here claiming it’s worthless. My workplace deploys a few thousand iPads as field computers. It’s becoming way more common than folks here think, as iPads have gotten powerful enough for this task, and they are usually easier to use than some ruggedized Windows tablet. It’s not at all uncommon for a contractor to pull out an iPad on a job site.

I actually wish Apple would go a step further and make a ruggedized iPad “Ultra.” In field developments, passively cooled iPads often hit the thermal wall on hot days. A water resistant, ruggedized version with active cooling and even larger battery would be ideal for our deployment.

Easy to make fun of this being a feature (I did the same at first) but this would probably save a tonnnn of kids that destroy their tablets and save parents in repair costs. Makes sense to add it to the base level iPad and Mini first???

A kindle and an iPad are sort of the opposite ends of the spectrum here.

A kindle, reading outside in the sun by the pool makes total sense (with e-ink).
You don't use the waterproofing of the iPhone to cool it down when it ***** the bed due to heat when used outdoors? I thought that was the reason they waterproofed it, as they clearly can't solve overheating!
 
The challenge trying to solve every unique use, costs. The iPhone ruggedness definitely a need. The iPad ruggedness solving the exception vs the rule. Two aspects of ruggness. The initial costs and the repair costs. To repair a waterproof watch more expensive example. Never had my iPad near water for many reasons.

This regulation is often misunderstood and misquoted. What you said is inaccurate. Use a replaceable battery means DIY easy repair with availability of tools and instructions. It does not mean you have to be able to swap out the iPad’s battery like you did with smart phones in the old days. So no. That’s not why Apple is giving the new iPad Mini water resistance.

So much cynicism packed into one paragraph lol. I for one have been waiting for waterproof iPads, especially the Mini.
It’s cynicism based on an inaccurate understanding of EU Requirements. It makes sense for Apple to make the iPad mini water resistant.

Batterygate cost them over $600M worldwide in regulatory fines and lawsuits across the USA and Europe. I don’t imagine they’re keen to repeat that fallout.

I often use the iPad mini for navigation information while kayaking. I want Apple to put polarized sunglasses on their engineers and have them take the iPad mini out on a sunny day. When they can easily read the screen, they have done their job.
