Riddle me this: what advantage does a foldable iPad over a dual-screen device? I get why you'd want your phone to turn into an iPad Mini for all sorts of reasons but nobody is buying one for an 18" web browser; the device practically screams 'multiple windows' at that size.
I can't imagine this to be a 18" device. I guess it will end up being a 13" iPad that folds down to a 4.5" x 7" x 0.4" package that fits in your pocket.

That’s why their AI is so bad, they have a bunch of developers working on software changes for foldables.

Foldable have still not really taken off. I even know a few people who moved back to regular phones after having a foldable. They are just not that great, and it’s an extra mechanical weak point in the design.
I'm one, but the reason I moved back was simply because I regretted paying flagship prices for a midrange-experience phone that folded. When the experience matches the price, I would entertain moving back to a foldable as I really enjoyed the form factor (Z Flip4) as long as the prices aren't too out there.

A foldable iPad, no thanks. I can't wait to read the posts from the "a solution in search of a problem" folks who skip the foldable iPhone and go straight to the nonsensical foldable iPad and post about how much they love their shiny new foldable iPad and how thankful they are that Apple "invented" foldables! 🤣

Really? That is funny because the handful of people I know besides me that own foldables love them and would never go back to slab phones. I'm sorry (not sorry), but I don't believe your story.

They think it would be a good idea. It could be. But they also forgot about our disdain for the Touch Bar.

I can understand why you didn't like the Z Flip 4. I've owned it, and 8 other book style foldable phones to date and I despised the Z Flip. It makes no sense in my use case. Having to flip it open to really do anything was very annoying. I traded it in for a Pixel slab phone I use for one of the backups to my Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The flip style foldables are pretty much useless. Book style foldables are they only way to go.

A good development. For me, I seek something the size of an iPad Mini or a bit smaller that, then, unfolds. Basically, something that is usable on-the-go for doing work without having to carry a computer bag of any kind. (pocketable iPad)
Good to know that Apple will sell at least ONE of something foldable.

18 inch, foldable with long awaited under screen tech? This thing will make the Vision Pro pricepoint feel like the bargain of the century.

I have no use for a foldable iPhone. It would quickly get annoying every time I needed to use it, fishing it out of my pocket and unfolding it to make or answer a call, and then refolding it before putting it back in my pocket.

But a foldable iPad is something I'd strongly consider.

A foldable maxc makes little sense to me; the issue I see is with the keyboard. The lack of feedback would make typing a challenge, especially for extended periods of time. I can see a foldable iPad Mini type device with an external screen to allow it to be used as a phone while folded, but the cost is likely to be prohibitive.

Why an external screen? Imagine having to hold an iPad mini for a phone call or open it everytime you wanted to check a message.

You don’t believe it on the basis that the people you know like them.

Where’s the logic? Is it an alternative fact?

18 inches screen and based on the picture I see, it is more like bent tablet than foldable. This huge tablet with 18 inches with half bent form factor may not be a good one. Typing the screen based keyboard is another pain since the feedback mechanism may not be great and also not sure whether this curved structure can stay upright without falling backside due to disproportionate weight balance. Not sure if this is something I would go after. I understand foldable (completely) mobile phones with the reduced foot prints while in the folded mode but this one, I am not sure. Besides, this is not going to be affordable either ($3000 plus) !

This is based on the people I know who own them, and countless posts I've read on foldable forums. Very few people go back to slab phones after owning a foldable. At least the book style foldables anyway.

If it actually comes to pass, the price will be Vision Pro-esque, for sure. The "cheap" Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold (16") starts at $1600 USD. Imagine what that ginormous folding iPad (and its correspondingly high upgrade pricing) will sell for.

This needs putting to bed I feel: Apple Intelligence is to Gemini as Spotlight is to Google.

Their AI isn’t ‘bad’, it’s just a different offering to the competition. Spotlight isn’t a worse product because Apple never built their own search engine.

Looking forward to something Foldable from Apple. However, a foldable Tablet doesn't make much sense to me. A foldable phone (not flip) on the other hand is great.

I received my Oppo Find N5 the other day and it was the most innovative thing I have unpacked since the original iPhone (in terms of phones).I was so excited to open it up. Took me back. LOVE it!

A foldable iPad makes sense as it would enable artists and others to more easily carry a much larger workspace. The large iPads are inherently fragile but a foldable one would be both convenient and someone more sturdy.
