The price will be sky high, and that'll limit its potential market; but at the same time there are lots of wealthy people out there who'll spend the $2-3k. And then there's those that make bad financial decisions who can't afford it but will still spend the $2-3k
Man I hope it’s not nearing the $3k mark. It’s terrifying enough having a $1k phone in my pocket!

No, they’re not. Even the size of the components has some wiggle room to change… and component suppliers are usually picked Dec/Jan timeframe for the upcoming iPhone
I don't know you, and I don't know what you do or know, so I'm not trying to say you're lying or don't know what you're talking about.

But what I do know is John Gruber, who has enough "little birdy" friends at Apple to know what he's talking about, says otherwise. See my prior post here. Specifically this quote from Gruber:
Further, the design of the iPhone X hardware was “locked” — again, a source’s word — prior to January 2017. If I had to wager, I’d say it was locked a few months before the end of 2016.
Granted, the latter sentence is his speculation, but, again, he is in a position to know. Even if that part is wrong, the hardware design was locked just shy of a year in advance per his source at Apple. It could be that shifts year to year, but I'd be really surprised if they were making "siz[ing]" changes six months prior to mass production, let alone anything else.

It doesn’t happen that often that it’s blatantly off like that, but they frequently distort or cherry-pick the source.
Or the headline is clickbait, or they treat rumors as facts within articles (like when they changed to iOS/macOS 26 well before WWDC). It's... not great.

For one, read the actual post from Luo, see link in the actual article.
As for me, i will just say that I worked for companies that were component suppliers to smartphones, so I have first hand experience with this process….

This will flop just like VR and Vision Pro. Gross. No one wants this other than a select few. Pricing? $2,000 base price….

Little shorter, fatter than mini… I honestly can't tell if I'd hate this thing or not. And a plastic screen… hm…

I’m not sure what I make of this. Surely it’s going to be impossible to hold one handed for many if it’s wider than a Pro Max?

This fall? What have they been doing all this time while Samsung has been eating their lunch?

This phone should have come out last year if not this year.

This is what ‘data driven’ decision making gets you. Sometimes you need an irrational visionary who dares to be different

Yes, just like Apple had the first personal computer, mp3 player, smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch. Oh hang on, they weren’t first with any of those.
I will grant all of you who have responded to my original post that Apple has not been first in many of these cases, however, I think you all should agree that Apple's version of a foldable phone will not reshape the market as they did with the original iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch (this one hasn't been as profound IMO as the previous three). After all, a foldable is not a whole new device, but rather a modification that, while cool, isn't a revolutionary step forward. My bad for not really clarifying what I was thinking in terms of first. So, I will rephrase my earlier comment this way, "Do you think the announcement of the apple foldable (when actually announced) will have nearly the same impact as the iPod, iPhone, or iPad? BTW, I am not mad at apple, grumpy, etc., I just loved those prior products' announcements, impact, etc., and I miss those days. Perhaps Apple was just lucky, but I hope they still have those kinds of moments in their future. I don't think the foldable will be one (though I would love to be wrong).

hm, I don't think so? I've got an iPhone Mini and fairly small hands for a guy my size, I can see adding another inch of width on it and being comfortable. It's more the height that makes a Pro Max unusable in one hand.

I'm not defending this fold design, btw… I've come to the conclusion that it's the ultimate "you just won't know until you try it" device. And even if I like it, I'll wait for the rev 2 because I don't trust plastic screens.

It was widely reported that Apple could only make 400k to 500k AVPs in year one, due to the screens. A poster arguing Apple wouldn’t sell a product where they could only make 500k needs to cite sources showing why all the previous reporting was wrong.

The idea that Apple expected an entirely new product category that starts at more than the average American’s monthly take home pay to be a smash hit just belies all rational thought. Apple’s executives and product managers all have business degrees from top schools. They’re not stupid. Of course the marketing wasn’t “it’s not for you” but It didn’t need to be, because of where they priced it.

The product was clearly aimed at developers and early adopters to help create content so that there is stuff there when the price and weight get to a reasonable place. Now you can argue about whether THAT plan was a success, or whether or not they should have held off for a year or two so they could get the price down, or whether or not sales were slower than Apple expected, but to argue Apple expected a $4,000 device to be a smash hit is just silly.

Back on topic, I suspect the foldable phone will sell well. I’m definitely interested in one.
A $3,500 iPad for your face was never aimed at developers. End of story.

gives me major vision pro vibes. Expensive and no one is asking for it.
I'd actually love to have one, unlike the vision pro. And it's (hopefully) not that expensive, if it can replace an iphone AND an ipad for some.

WTF do people want this? Seems like a novelty to me (and by the time they release it, it won’t be)

After years and years of basically the same slab phone; people are itching for something different, and a larger camera tumour bump doesn't quite scratch that itch.

And in my mind, why would you not want this?!? An iPhone that can expand to be an iPad mini when you want more screen real estate sounds great to me and would probably result in me saving money in the long run, even at the rumored prices.

That’s not to say Apple is gong to nail the execution, but the idea is super exciting to me.

Different strokes for different folks.

I don’t know why but I love the idea of a short fat mini. Especially if it opens into a small iPad.
