If there were a way to see who purchased these additional phones, one might see that a large portion of the stock goes to places like wal-mart and the service providers (AT&T, Verizon, ect.) in anticipation of sales. If sales of the phone are down they do deals like "two for one with new contract" and the like, so yeah, the service providers help Apple and Apple probably cuts them a bulk discount. It's a you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours type of situation. Those are unit numbers not dollars.

And maybe they're offering phones to Thor. Who knows? But I tend to actually look at numbers and try my best to not baselessly speculate to make my hypothesis correct.

I don't know if Apple had any role in creating standards that made Airpods and Airpods alternatives possible.

What I do know is that
1) introduction of an iPhone without 3.5mm headphone jack significantly increased market for wireless headphones, forcing major headphone makers to shift their priorities.

2) introduction of Airpods set a bar for expectations for truly wireless headphones. Before Airpods, truly wireless headphones were expected to have some flaws because it was considered a bleeding edge technology. After Airpods, reviewers will demolish your truly wireless headphones if they are worse than Apple's.
There are little to no high Fidelity workedwi solutions. And you can count anything Apple, out. They don't support aptx or aptx hd. So no matter what requirement you have, it will be crippled due to that alone, plus the fact that a physical cable, will always have better quality than current Bluetooth tech.

Also Apple has not set the standard for wireless headphones. There have been many superior models prior to airpods. Do people really believe everything Apple claims, or what their fan sites claim?

Not actually, Thor is a fictional character that actually could never happen. On the other hand AT&T and wal-mart are real entities and anyone that's ever worked retail knows that's EXACTLY how it works, so baseless...nope. Try again.

I just figured I'd throw out a "maybe" that had just as much basis in fact behind it as you. Yeah. that's what happens sometimes. Other times, cell companies start selling the phone at discount or two for one within a month of the phone going on sale.

From what I heard, the bezelless design of the iPhone X necessitated the removal of the headphone jack. I guess that was also (partly) Apple’s endgame as well. The iPhone 7 was the sacrificial lamb which bore the brunt of the outrage over the removal of the jack so that by the time the iPhone X was released, this was for most part a non-issue.

In hindsight, that makes a lot of sense.

Huh. Name one.

Huh. Name one.
Name one? Huh? Are you implying that there were no other better Bluetooth implementations before the airpods?! LOL!!!! It's sad if you don't know about aptx or aptx hd, but then again, anyone who's blinded by Apple would believe "airpods are the best".

You're conflating hardware with codecs. He's asking for a piece of hardware that's better. The better response would be to bring up ones that sound better or ones that get better battery life or ones that have better features. They exist, you just have to give it the smallest amount of effort instead of acting smug and superior.

You don't have to do much or any research at all to find hardware that supports these codes, which equate to better sounding drivers, and better hardware. It's not rocket science. Apple is horrid when it comes to audio quality and supported files/codecs. This has been the case for many years, and continues on now.

Except simply supporting better codecs doesn't lead to a better experience. There's also battery life, charge time, how they feel in the ears, and even how they're controlled that are important.

When you don't shave off quality for profits, and do in fact support better codecs, you more than likely will have a better experience. And many times for a cheaper price. Airpods have never been proclaimed for quality nor comfort. They are the same basic layout as earpods, without the wire. Do some research, and you will see how many superior options are out there.

In other words, you have nothing.

In other words, you have no retort. That's fine. Fact still remains either way, *shrugs*

I'd like to hear those facts of yours. I'd like to know a truly wireless earbud set that's objectively better than AirPods. I've seen a lot that are better in one way or another, but the AirPods are a good overall package.

That’s the Airpods in a nutshell. You will not find a similar set of wireless headphones that are objectively better in every aspect. They might beat the Airpods in a certain area, but invariably lose out in other areas.

In the very least, Apple already has home-ground advantage with W1 chip and iCloud switching. Apple has managed to engineer a package which is just good enough in all the right areas for the majority of users, and this shows in their popularity.

I like Jabra Elite Sport more than AirPods, but I think they would not exist if Apple never made AirPods.
Advantages are: really good HRM, waterproof, in-ear (better sound, noise isolation), hear-through (blend your music with outside sound when you need it, addressing one of the biggest downsides of in-ear headphones), better call quality, solid fit (you are more likely to get a concussion than have earbud fall out of your ear during exercise)

They are a bit bigger and heavier though.

No. That can’t be possible. Tim Cook told us it was a 50 year old port! Nobody uses it!!! Lies!!! Lies!!!! Liesssss!!!!!

All day long I hear nothing but Lies Lies Lies. I think the 3.5 port is 50 years old and I don't miss it on my X or my 8 or my 7. No lie!

I am quite happy to keep my iPhone 6S WITH headphone jack to support my 8 - 9 ear pods scattered about at the ready. As Apple moves towards disintegration with dongles replacing ports and no real innovation I keep my 2013 MBP 13, iPad Air 4 years old, and our 2 6Ss which HAVE ports and NO monthly payments!
Sounds to me that you just are to cheap to replace all of your antiquated Apple products...
