here is a thought

A large percentage of the population carries their phone in a purse a lot, so how do you count steps then?

This is neat. However, it seems rather excessive. Caffeine tracking??? Seems this should be more of a Myfitnesspal or Fitbit thing.

Two of my most used apps on iPhone. So glad :apple: capitalised on both to create their own. Now it just needs to be better than MFP and FB.

Or those apps can just update for iOS 8 to be a 'source' for the health app and their data would automatically appear in the Health dashboard.

7 days of previous data for steps isn't much. Pedometer, a free app on the iPhone 5S now does at least 3 months worth, at least that's as far back as I've been using it, so the ability to display much more than 7 days is already there. I hope Apple drastically improves that feature.

The way I read this was that when 1st installed users will be able to see their last 7 days of activity already. Seeing as there is also a month and year tab you will be able to see 'much more than 7 days'

Can someone say why there is data for some and not others? Mine is showing No Data.

EDIT>>> I rebooted the phone and the data showed up.

How dare they use such tiny type. It's like on the back of a pill bottle. Shameful. Really, I'm sick of tiny type on my iPhone. And I have every possible thing to enhance reading enabled. This screen shot is much larger than my phone's actual screen.

Not to mention white text against orange, or the other screen - against lime green?! That's a death penalty in graphics design!

Can't lie, I'm looking forward to 'health' app. It seems like having a personal trainer, nutritionist and doctor all wrapped in one to a certain degree:D...

The current problem I have with staying fit and healthy, is lack of motivation:eek:... I hope with something like Health app where I can constantly monitor my progress in one place with the least hassle, this will all change.

I had a bad experience with a pedometer I bought at the sharper image in 1995, so I'm skeptical of "motion tracking".
Did it cheat on you?

No, no, no. Ive is a genius and knows what he's doing. What are you, some kind of expert UI designer? Ha! The white/neon combo makes perfect sense, but there's no use explaining it to you because you probably wouldn't understand. ;-P

I am really excited about all the health stuff coming up in iOS 8 but I am also nervous. I wonder how much battery all this constant motion monitoring is going to take. I use an app called Runtastic almost daily for a 45-minute jog and that alone uses 10%.

Runtastic uses GPS.

The M7 co-processor is working if you use it or not, its an always running processor so it doesn't use any more battery than you're already unaware that its using.

I just hope these apps are accurate!!!

I downloaded a recent walking counter which I believe uses the motion co-processor and it was deleted after 10mins of testing. It was counting steps when I was not moving etc

Does anyone know if the the Health App. Has a Medical Directive card so Doctors will know to check their for medication allergies?

I heard that was a possible feature.

Good comes to those who wait...

....But in Apple's case there are always exceptions. Just because it takes time, doesn't mean Apple will do it right, maybe for them perhaps.

It should not be a big problem for iPhones 5s or newer as they use the motioncoprocessor to count steps rather efficiently. Runtastic on the other hand uses gps to track location and speed. Sadly gps usage is a major battery drain on all ios devices and most android devices.

The contrast can be shown using the withings app:
There is a step count function within the app that utilizes the motioncoprocessor on the 5s but has to keep gps active on earlyer versions (probably due to how background apps are allowed to access motion sensors pre 5s)

Long term

It will be interesting to see how Apple's Health and HomeKit strategies work out for everyone in the long run. Essentially all these apps just become "dumb" sensors with all the data getting dumped into Apple's system and all the magic happening in their UI. Not such a big deal with HomeKit since it's less software the hardware manufacturers have to write. But Apple has a history of reeling hardware & software vendors in to their system in a way that looks advantageous for them and then Apple takes the best of what they learned and just incorporating it in to their own hardware/software/services. I guess anyone in those respective businesses worth their nuts knows this anyway. So I guess nothing's changed.

Also: green battery bar?

Yeah, you set it up in the app and it is accessible.

Almost zero.

Runkeeper makes use of the M7 right now - recording your walking passively, even when the app is not open (the M7 chip is tracking your steps anyway).

The reason you use more battery when you have the app open and actively track your runs is that the GPS chip is being used, which is quite thirsty on the battery.
