I take back everything I said about the US government not sending enough money. You know why? Because we are sending the governor of Florida!!!! What else could they possibly need?!?!?
Good idea to send him... but this will raise issues again. Anyways, politics for that forum so I'll drop it here.

***Does anyone know if there are any legal issues I should know about if I wanted to put canisters in stores to collect money? (I live in Pennsylvania)

If you have permission from the stores, I guess you could.

Lets continue to be fair - Bill Gates donates far more than Steve Jobs is worth... Therefore Steve Jobs couldn't donate that money even if he wanted to, so we don't know, maybe if Steve Jobs made 100 billion he'd donate 90 billion of it, maybe he wouldn't donate any of it.

Fair enough...But the point was that Gates is pretty charitble- on a % basis-.. There's plenty of reasons to bash Gates ;-)- I just don't think this is one of them... Most of the reports about damages & aid are still in the early stages- as the whole thing gets assessed more & more countries, & individuals (possibly Gates & SJ) are upping their contributions not only with immediate funds but promises of funds to be committed once it is determined what's what.. To me that is an encouraging aspect of a tragic , tragic , situation...

I give India credit for sticking to their way & not accepting aid- but I hope if they do need it they request it... Very proud people- ...

I guess you have a point when you look at the list, just seeing it on the BBC site:

World Bank: $250m
UK: $96m
Sweden: $75m
China: $60m
France: $56m
EU $44m
Netherlands: $36m
US: $35m
Canada: $33m
Japan: $30m
Australia: $27m
Denmark: $15.6m
Saudi Arabia: $10m
Norway: $6.6m
Taiwan: $5.1m
Finland: $3.4m
Kuwait: $2.1m
UAE: $2m
I just saw that US is increasing the aid tenfold to $350m. I guess the list was a bit too embarrassing for them... link

More like too early to justify anything more...C'mon , everybody's initial offerings were lower, then the real facts starting pouring in & everyones offerings were raised... I don't get involved in political discussions but to claim the US isn't ALWAYS willing to help ANYONE under ANY circumstances is just wrong- history has proven that over & over again- that's just facts... Everyone criticizes the US for being over involved with the world, but when Mother Nature attacks these same regions, whose radical few exist only to terrorize & attack the US- their allies & anyone who doesn't think the same as them, are the 1st to say they don't do enough for them... They are afterall "the richest nation in the world"- right ?... Don't forget the US will lead the charge over there with Drs. & Nrs. & volunteer crews to help with cleanup & anything else needed... Those "Idiot Americans" are pretty resourceful people ya know... Whatever the criticisms of America are, that's fine, some are justified , others are not- but to criticize them for not being at the top of a list for a day is unfair, imho... Noone gives more than them annually...

He said that if they heard warnings, they should seek higher ground immediately.

But that's the thing, there were no warnings.....

Back on topic: Its a very cool way to get people to contribute aid - I don't think there has ever been such a consolidated showing of support on the web like this ever. :D

Apple is performing a great public service.

Our Church will be taking up a special collection this Sunday and next for the tsunami victims in the Indian ocean area. Next Sunday will be World Relief Sunday. They have been active for decades. Going into very difficult situations. The organization was founded at Park Street Church by our then Senior Pastor Dr. Ockengae.

I find it odd that Apple India (http://www.apple.co.in/) doesn't have anything about the tsunamis. Then again, Apple Europe (http://www.apple.com/euro/) seems to be in odd shape right now.

It's India that needs help, so it's almost presumptous for a foreign company to solicit aid from a company where it's based. It makes more sense to keep India homepage as it is, and allow other sites to donate foreign aid.

Yeah, you're right, but I'd think they'd put something along the lines of what they have on the U.S. page but perhaps not the donation links.

So far India has remained true to their policies & refused any foreign aid other than minimal UN assistance... They're a proud culture & insist they can go this on their own- that may change & I'm sure not a reasonably intelligent person in the world would think lesser of them...

As an update, nearly every site not mentioned for having a donate link now does, although Apple is still the only one with a complete ad on the front page, M$ still has what PCs you should buy!

Just wanted to let you guys know that during one TV show that just ended the German people just donated another 10,250,000€ ($13,799,575) and it is not over yet, a lot of people are still being called back to donate. There'll be about 15,000,000€ ($20,194,500) by tomorrow or the day after.
Just wanted to say again that I think it is great that we're moving closer together and that people are giving this much money.

Apple's new Xserves have taken over the Apple home page today. I hope Apple's temporary use of their home page (for a week) to refer people to relief efforts did some good.

Apple still has a link at the bottom right hand corner. So they are still using space for disaster relief. I wonder if there are any records kept with the Apple link being used to donate?

Hi - I am one of 10 or so musicians who have used the internet over the past 10 days to record a song to raise money for the Tsunami victims. We have also set up a website at www.faceoffriendship.org where people donate a small amount of money and then download the song. There is also a free sample of the song available at the site. Thought you might like to know about it given it was mostly done on Macs :) .

Many thanks

David

Check out Microsoft.com. After a few days, they shamelessly ripped Apple off...but they made it much, much smaller ;)
