Are we talking having to read an ad before I make a phone call or seeing an ad for a full version when I play a 'lite' game?

option 2. i think even apple would have trouble selling "pre-roll" ads on phone calls to the public.

You seriously think you would need to see an ad before placing a phone call? That doesn't sound a little ridiculous?

i don't like ad mod in googles hands as it gives them the advantage of knowing what apps are run on the iphone which versions etc, giving them the advantage of knowing what to put in the android marketplace....

How is AdMob able to see what applications are on someone's iPhone?

We are talking about the ads that 3rd party developers already have in this apps. Apple isn't going to start stick ads all over the place on the iPhone.

Nobody likes ads.

You forget how important Ads are to you getting all your content for FREE on the internet. Ads are EXTREMELY important. If there are not Ads, you're gonna be shelling out a lot more cash for the simple things.

Before everyone gets all pissy, why don't we WAIT to see what Apple says first!

The big picture is being missed here:

This is a thing that annoys Steve Jobs, and another reason he isn't fond of Google right now. When a developer puts a free application on the iTunes store Apple gets no money. To makes matters worse, when a free application places ads on their application Apple gets no money, and the developer gets money via ads. The final kick in the nuts is the fact that if these ads are served up by Google we have the developer AND Google making money off an application served up for free in iTunes and Apple gets nothing still.

Apple will fix that problem the following way:

-Probably not with 4.x, but with 5.x on developers will be forced to use iAd if they will place advertising in their applications. Ads via Google/Admob will be denied saying some excuse about "poor user experience".

-If Apple does not flat out deny applications that serve up ads via Google then they will charge developers for every download, regardless if they are sold for free in the app store or not.

I guarantee Jobs is peeved at the fact Google is pulling in probably millions in revenue via iPhone applications while Apple doesn't get a penny.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Am I right in thinking that Apple get none of the ad revinue from apps with ads from Admob et;al?

If so, this gives Apple a chance of a slice of revinue for hosting free apps from the app store via their ad service.

Makes perfect sense to me. If developers end up getting more via a price war then all the better IMO.

As a smart man once said, developers, developers, developers, developers.... (ok, perhaps no so smart....) :D

I already pay for the ad free experience.

Personally, If I see adverts that are annoying, boring, unimaginative etc, then I'll go out of my way to avoid buying any products from said company.

Not only that, how would it make any app suddenly available for Android? What a crazy statement....

the day ads pop up on my Mac is the day I will re-enact "Will it Blend" with my MacBook...

You've gone a little too far here, I think. Denying the ability to serve ads from other networks would open up Apple to serious litigation. Google, for instance, offers AdSense to those using its services, but Google doesn't prevent you from using another ad network. (I use Technorati, for instance, though I'm not terribly happy with it.)

I think Apple wants to do two things: 1) offer app developers an ad network that they can integrate into their iPhone and iPad products; 2) provide developers with an innovative ad platform that allows them to produce creative advertising that will work on devices that use the iPhone OS (including the iPad).

Yeah...kind of my point.

No. Businesses sell things. They advertise. We buy. They give some things away to draw us in. Things are given free with the intention of ultimately making us buy more. Unless there are philanthropists online I've not heard about.

Any chance this may come to fruition?

@Otaviano
This is what I was hinting at.

Google ain't nothing.
They have to buy to compete. Other than ad money which is about to get marginalzed, google ain't nothing.

Ads shown on the iPhone or iPad are not geared toward that users, it would be nice for app developers to buy advertising specific for a device.
