cool, so stop ********ting and release iBeacon already Apple! Oh wait, you'll take three years to release it so it "just works" when it's released. Meanwhile, Android has had the same thing and it works fine.

Again, as a software developer I can assure you that Android doesn't have the same. Of course Android devices can listen to Bluetooth. However, an iOS application designed to react to iBeacons can do so without using any power or RAM whatsoever until it enters the range of a beacon that it is designed to handle, and Android isn't anywhere near.

Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo's handheld 3DS gaming device uses a wireless-based system that is somewhat similar to iBeacons to allow two devices to communicate with one another. It also utilizes hotspots around the world to deliver game information, and iBeacons could work similarly, albeit more simply as they would not require a user to connect to Wi-Fi.

I'm not sure why the article thinks this system would be simpler than Nintendo's wifi solution. I never have to "connect to Wi-Fi". I just leave my wifi enabled and carry my 3DS around. It automatically picks up info from hotspots and other users' devices.

Definitely not productivity, because casual games eat up plenty of time. I shudder to think about how much time the wife has put into Clumsy Ninja and Singing Monsters, but there is just something qualitatively different about playing a game that requires a video card that cost twice what the rest of the computer did to make it run. :)

And Apple has introduced many people who were never into "gaming" to games through iOS, but hard core gaming fanatics still have to deal with poorly written drivers and such.
I cut my teeth on Wolf, Doom, Quake World, Q3A, UT, Elder Scrolls, Need for Speed. But there are several fantastic graphical titles from real racing to infinity blade.

Dad and I used to frag each other, sniping and hiding in corners, huddled down in our mancave. Now we try to out mind puzzle. Tallest goo tower, most cover orange/quell/ctr achievements from different states.

Its still gaming, just neither of us hide away at our desks anymore.

this is just like LAN game play, but for short ranged gaming from mobile device.

I like it, as long as no personal info is being harvested... (ie contacts ....

All of this cool tech is good, if done right........ But for now, i'll still be "suspicious"
