Apple's iPad 3 Launch Putting Squeeze on Freight Shipments from China

Given the size of China's export market, I have a hard time believing this could be true.

I'm also amazed (again) that people on this site automatically assume a rumor is fact, even though there's little to no supporting evidence. It's a rumor site. Rumors are fun, and batting them around verbally is a pleasant diversion... but they usually end up to be less than factual.

That would be great but I'm hoping for a release date of the 16th. It fits my schedule better:D

I think the reason they are doing this is not so much to have an earlier release date (although the 16th isn't late at all it's perfect) but to hve A LOT MORE supply
Because of last years crazy demand and shortages

Sold my v2 32G wifi only so I'll have to do without from tomorrow 'til... ?
Withdrawl, here we come.

FWIW, I placed on eBay for $350 starting bid, with a 'buy it now' of $450, and it sold for $495. Wow.

Good for you but that buyer is not too bright. He saved what 100$, had he waited a few days, he would have had his 100$ worth!

Think about this.

One company, just one, is putting a strain on shipping space from just one of their products. That is insane.

I don't people realize how flipping popular the iPad is.

Wouldn't be the first time. Excerpt and link.

There’s also the tale of how Steve Jobs bought out all air freight for Christmas 1998:

To ensure that the company’s new, translucent blue iMacs would be widely available at Christmas the following year, Jobs paid $50 million to buy up all the available holiday air freight space, says John Martin, a logistics executive who worked with Jobs to arrange the flights. The move handicapped rivals such as Compaq that later wanted to book air transport.

Makes it much harder for apple to fly under the radar when they make waves this big for each product launch.

For all we know, apple is trying to ship out iPads AND apple tvs. Could be an extra strain on the channels.

I agree their export market is huge, but you can definitely count the number of planes that come out of there each day. And there is only so much space that is negotiable. Certain things are booked as going under any circumstances. Other things can be delayed if the payment is right.

Apple doesn't have to be buying ALL the space. But they can certainly put a dent in whatever negotiable capacity that's available and apply bidding pressure that sidelines others until Apple is done moving what they want to move.

argh when is is wednesday? They also need to introduce a new version of time capsule, one that really works for events like these :apple:

There must be some tax evasion issue going on on the purchasers end. There is just no way an American purchaser should be buying used a somewhat outdated $600 (+ sales tax) device for $495. The only explanation I can think of is that your iPad is going to travel back channels to get sold in a market with much higher sales taxes or Apple currency markup.

Maybe I should sell my iPad 1.

Apple sells the refurb 32gb ipad 2 for $499 + taxes to most states. The buyer probably saved $30-$50 in taxes by buying it for $495 on ebay. Plus, they get 2% cashback in ebay bucks. $495 is not a bad deal at all for a nice iPad 2 - 32gb.

Certainly is getting close.

I don't know if this is related or not, but I noticed something a couple days ago at the Apple store near me. The iPad 2 that was displayed in the window on the side of the building (alongside a bunch of very large App icons) is no longer there. It still says iPad 2 printed on the glass, but the iPad is no longer there.

will apple be streaming the keynote live - or was it just that one time?

no one knows. they said they were doing a live stream like one or 2 days before the event. If they are going to do it, we will hear within 24h. else il go to engadget live blog if there is one. Although live blogs always sucks due to traffic.
It sucks though. i rather watch the keynote life. I cant bear to delay the spoilers and watch the uploaded keynote.

The rumor isn't saying that apple is filling every plane from China. It is the extra space that squeeze price. Keep in mind that there are basically no empty delivery planes just sitting around. Everything in this day and age is scheduled and filled to the most efficient level companies can make it. Suddenly Apple wants to squeeze in another 5 million boxes into the supply chain. That could have an impact.

But yes, this rumor could be completely false and just someone making something up.

If there is a live stream it will show up as a small ad on Apple's homepage by tomorrow.

Whoever said it was an American purchaser? I actually sell a significant amount of my old Apple products on eBay outside the US. It seems when I open the bidding to int'l buyers I get much better prices, even though they have to pay a lot more for shipping.

I'm really hoping for a March 16th release date. It matches up perfectly with what they did last year. For months now I have been planning the week of the 12th for the release date. That week I'm good to go, but can't take off the 9th.

Dunno why they just don't send them directly to customers from Shenzhen like always... For the sake of a few days?
I don't think air freight is that much cheaper even if you buy the lot - never tried it myself yet!

Is also causing a few more leaks too.
