Apple insider has some more detail on this now
http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._deal_with_dhl_shaking_up_shipping_rates.html

A release on Friday is very possible. Last year they released on the second Friday of the month.

Interesting. I bet this isn't limited to DHL. Apple has done a lot with UPS lately, also. I'm sure it's just that someone at DHL leaked the info, or some firm that does business with DHL, which is why they were the only ones mentioned. I'm sure Apple has booked space on flights from all of the big three: FedEx, UPS and DHL. Wouldn't surprise me if they were doing business with other strictly air-freight providers also (think Evergreen and similar companies).

Starting to get excited now! Can't wait for the retina goodness :D

Managed to sell my 32gb wifi iPad 2 for £399, so It will only cost me £75 to get iPad 3 :D

If it came out on the 9th of March... Well that would be a conundrum. To play with Mass Effect 3 or a new iPad?

Are they shipping TVs?

iPad does not take a lots of space compared to TVs

unless there is some additional products to be announced along with iPad 3

(MBA, MBP, iPad Mini, refreshed iPod Touch???)

very strange.

That's odd considering Apple's long time use of FedEx for stuff coming from China.

Lately I've noticed a shift more to UPS. But it probably depends on the destination. If they're going to launch in Europe at the same time, DHL has a much bigger presence there.

I'm sure that if they're using DHL to the US they will probably just fly everything air freight (as opposed to open and distribute services like FedEx Intl Priority Distribution or whatever it is and UPS's equivalent) and have either UPS or FedEx package the items and handle delivery within the US. DHL has such a minimal presence here.

It makes me sad knowing that there are millions of iPad 3's floating around the world right now and I don't/can't have one!!! Lol

Assuming that they have 5M ready to go , and that each plane can handle 150k units, that's thirty planes or so... I would think that they wouldn't really want to ship them all at the same time for a laugh, they have been probably been shipping 2-3 planes daily I would think... So for the past two weeks or so. It is hard to imagine that taking 2-3 planes would have a major impact on the entire fleet.
Ah well,
I can't wait "To touch" the new iPad on march 7th...

But you aren't taking the current products being sold into count. How many iMacs, mbps, iPhones, iPad 2's, displays, etc are also shipping in addition to the iPad 3 cargo?

thats crazy i thought air freight would be way too expensive, thought everything came over on cargo ships yet.

It's probably closer to 500M units, because in every major country around the world, every business will want 1 for every employee, every school will want 1 for every student, and every citizen wants 1 for their own personal use.

So they've had to buy out the cargo space for 500m / 150k = 3,333 planes from China in the last week.

I guess that could be considered a new way to block the Galaxy Tab - at least for a week or so.

I actually almost tried a strategy like that once, years ago. Remember BBSes? Before the internet we'd dial into BBSes using our phone lines. Smaller ones might only have one phone line so only one person could be online at a time. There was a game I played in fierce competition with a friend. The game stipulated that if you failed to login for a week, you forfeited. So I had this devious plan to occupy the BBS phone lines for an entire week. Thankfully I never actually carried it through :p

I'll be curious to see how quickly the iPad 3 will be available to buy in Canada, and how crazy the lineups will be. I'm taking a trip in early April and would love to have a new iPad to occupy time, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get my hands on one in time...

Given the size of China's export market, I have a hard time believing this could be true.

A great deal of China's exports are shipped by sea. Hang out at one of the big West Coast ports and you will be amazed by how many of the container ships are Chinese. Practically all of them. In fact the empty containers pile up so quickly, you can buy one for the cost of removal.

How will availability work with IPad3 (how did they release IPad2 for that matter?). Can I buy it online and pick it up at my local store or do I have to stand in line at the store if I wish to get it locally?

Think about this.

One company, just one, is putting a strain on shipping space from just one of their products. That is insane.

I don't people realize how flipping popular the iPad is.

And not from any country, but from China, the main factory for the world!
And it's not shipping furniture or anything huge; it's just tiny tablets in fairly small boxes.
How can this be possible??? :D

I'm really hoping for a March 16th release date. It matches up perfectly with what they did last year. For months now I have been planning the week of the 12th for the release date. That week I'm good to go, but can't take off the 9th.

me too! - or if its available right after the announcement they can ship it out asap!

Man I hope not because Apple is only planning on selling around 65M units this year.

Think Different.
Make them in America.

That would be nice, and the pre-staging sounds promising for a quick release. But same-day as the announcement? Apple used to do that with new product, but not anymore. They can't generate as much manufactured anticipation for the media to observe and report on if they ship too quick ;)
