I am actually in the market nowadays. I have hesitated to buy new ipad for three months. the reason is that it's too big, and heavy comparing to my kindle fire. I always wanted apple to release small version of ipad someday. so time seems to come if it won't be just rumor. if Apple will release it this year, I will immediately go & get it. kindle fire or nexus 7 are good. but I have to use my itunes, all my account into one device. ipad (and my my iphone) seem the best way. price? well, hopefully it won't be no more than $250. otherwise, ipad mini won't compete with other tablet. maybe 16GB will be basic model? hope.

I actually prefer TN to the VA screens I've used. TN only has a veiwing angle problem in one axis, while VA has issues in both axes.

As a graphics designer I've been particular to IPS (in its various flavors) for so long that I tend to lump TNs and *VAs into a generic "inferior where it matters to me" -category without even thinking about.

2) There is a high end iPod touch better in every way except thickness/weight: the iPhone. There won't be a high end alternative to the 7.85" iPad that is better in every way.

I share your view on the iPod Touch / iPhone pair; however I think the same way of this theoretical smaller iPad compared to the larger models.

Why not?

Ipad mini... why so much hatred for this? me, where i live, WIFI is costly. I'm looking for 3G network Tablet under $300. iPad is $600 here. i can't afford that!!! That's why I'm eagerly waiting for ipad mini. No matter what it's design is, i'll blindly buy it.

Can't believe people are STILL buying into this ipad mini design.

It can't make any sense for Apple to release something like that. I highly doubt Apple would release something like that now. Maybe later but not now.

The prices would be too weird and anyways, they can just bump the ipad 2 down to 299 for an 8GB, OR 16GB, I'm sure the internal memory has at LEAST gotten cheaper by now.

Some of the tablets out there STILL can't even compete with the ipad 2 let alone the 3rd.

That a way, apple won't have to worry about another screen size, and neither will developers.

And I predict the next gen ipod touch will get the bigger screen as well as the iPhone. I have this strong feeling, even after all the hardware parts that have shown up for this supposed 5, that the final build will not look like that.

;)

Based on the numbers listed the ipad mini would be a little less than 5.5 inches wide. You can't cradle that in your hand? Go grab a piece of paper and fold it in half, then turn it sideways and hold it. That is 5.5 inches wide.
Excellent demo!
and the paper is only slightly taller.

...and if the dimensions in this schematic are to be believed, then even the width is slightly narrower than a folded sheet of letter-size paper.

Folded Paper = 5.50" x 8.50"

iPad Mini = 5.30" x 7.88"

That's bs without hard numbers. Have they sold 7 million already, somehow I doubt it.

7 million LOL

shipment was 600,000 in June and 700,000 in July.

Google probably sold at most 1 million of these worldwide so far.

Google probably will sell around 4-5 millions this year. Nowhere near Ipad.

Good point, I see what you mean, it's not that bad, although I don't know if holding it like that would be comfortable for reading hours at a time with. <insert "You're holding it wrong" joke here>

True, but I think if you were just reading for an extended period of time you could switch hands/hold it from the bottom/rest it on something. I think the ability to cradle it will be important for interacting with the device but not for prolonged reading.

It may not be an iPad mini but an iTouch XL.:)

Ipad Mini = Samsung Galaxy Note 2

People still do not understand that a ipad mini is a ipod touch and the ipad is a giant ipod touch. Now if people really want a "ipad mini" get a samsung galaxy note 2. It has a 5.5 inch screen and doubles as a smartphone and tablet with the same form factor as the samsung galaxy note. It also just isnt any ordinary tablet it has a Wacom digitiser system which results in accurate pressure-sensitive input. Did I mention that it is alot more portable than a 7 inch tablet and a 9.7 inch tablet and fits in your pocket? I brought my samsung galaxy note out with me to dinner and people thought it was a ipad mini. Even though the os was different and had 4 capacitive buttons on the bottom.

I challenge anyone to find another smartphone/tablet with the same size, portability, benefits, and features

I STILL DON'T BELIEVE APPLE WOULD EVER RELEASE THIS!!
Here's why....Apple once said they were not scared of cannibalizing their pc sales with the iPad but I believe they are scared of cannibalizing their iPad sales!! iPhone is in a whole different league to do it but an iPad mini would kill off the bigger iPad!! Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??
iPad is killing everything right now why mess with success??

I fully agree, if that's the case I would definitely go with Mini, looks cute, big enough for reading but lighter and more portable from iPad.

But Apple is no stupid either. There must be something which differentiate iPad Mini from its big brother.

It could only be available only up to 32GB maybe? Or use non IPS display, or it could use older SoC.
Look at the iPod Touch, Steve claimed it was an iPhone without a phone. Well it's not. It's a dumbed down iPhone with wonky display and CPU. Almost nobody would want that except students or new Apple customers.

Go buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 instead. It has the benefits that you are looking for

Just LOL at Apple suing Samsung for products that look similar, then they bring out this iPad mini.

Does an iPod Touch run iPad apps in the tablet layout? Because that's the point of this iPad Mini.

To me a 5.5" screen is much too small for tablet apps. I have a 7" tablet and I feel the screen is a bit cramped.

no, lol
you are missing the point
the difference in size prevent from considering doing it (look at the Android world. this failed)

And for the sake of it, a picture to try to illustrate it: Image

No, you are missing my point. First, at 16:9 7" you really dont have the real-estate to build elaborate "ipad-like" interfaces. This comes back to Jobs early point about 7" being too small. Second, while landscape does allow for it, in some sense, this would be a very simple modification to make to pre-existing applications, given that Apple does the proper groundwork. And design-wise, its something that you would have to do regardless, if you were making the 7" 16:9 run ipad apps to begin with.

All in all, my solution allows for increased re-use of both design and code, allowing for faster development and less work wasted due to cross-development. So once again, i am afraid that you are the one missing things.

P.S.

Nota bene: 16:9, 7". Nothing more, nothing less. Thanks.

Also, the difference in size is smaller than most would imagine. Even without knowing the screen-size of the iphone 5, we can definitely say that a 7" 16:9 ipad (screen) would be less than 4x as large, and most certainly be held at a distance far greater than the average user holds their iphone.

WTH. I was answering to your quote of my post, with a completely out of place comment with the discussion. What is this, now?
And after almost 2k posts on this forum, you're not even able to remove lines in my post that was not answering you, and now out of context.

The quantity of data you can display on a 7" screen is, as you say, about 4x times what you have with a 4" (minus interface elements).
If you only scale from 4" to 7", you lose that advantage (obviously not including photos or videos scaling too). And the distance doesn't make much difference here.
If apps can be written such that the layout of a same app can adapt on both a 4" and a 7", this just sucks. Most actual Android tablet apps are a good proof of that. Another factor of this fail is probably the 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio and 7" size.
This 7" 16:9 size belong to another category than the pocket device category, you can't only target to run enlarged phone apps on such screen. You have to create dedicated apps that take advantage of the larger space available, whatever a smaller device with a screen the same aspect ratio would exist.

Now, yes, you can simply scale an iPhone app on a larger screen, 16:9 7" if you want. That's already true on an iPad, you can run iPhone apps on it.
That was not the subject of our discussion, and of the post you quoted. Read again. Follow [recursively] links. Etc.

What kind of 7 inch tablet are you using? What do you use it for reading? web surfing? gaming? Most 7 inch tablets have a big bezel. The SGN & SGN 2 have a much smaller bezel surrounding the screen. The front of the device is mostly screen. Go to a At&t store and try it out for yourself. Its much better to hold the device and see it in person

I've been using a Playbook and use both Playbook apps and Android apps on it, for all of the things you've mentioned. I also have an iPad and have tried most of the major Android tablets.

And yes I've tried Galaxy Note as well. Its 5"+ screen size is definitely too small for any apps that are optimized for tablets which is also weakness of the 7" tablet which I feel is a bit too big for phone apps and mobile sites but a bit too small for tablet apps. Hopefully the 8" iPad will be better in that regards.
