Apple's iPad Sales Up 15% Year-Over-Year in 3Q 2017

I don't know much about the Chrombook market, so can you get a durable and reliable Chrombook for $165, which is 1/2 the price of the entry level 2017 iPad? The access to the iOS ecosystem and included apps like iWork seem to be worth the difference.

Yes we purchased a whole slew of Chromebooks for $150 each. They have lasted 2 years so far. Domestically, Chromebooks dominate the K-12 market with 58% market share. Meanwhile iOS and Mac OS market share has been dwindling. Outside of the US, Windows dominates. (Source: https://9to5mac.com/2017/03/02/apple-ios-market-share-k-12-education-chrome-os/)

Good data and I don't doubt it. My son said they have Chromebooks in a couple of his classrooms at public high school. He hates them. Internet is spotty on campus, so basic document apps on the Chromebooks work intermittently. He says the keyboard and trackpads often do not work properly because they get beat up and are poorly made.

This is just anecdotal, and it is possible my son doesn't really understand the operating system, which could be tainting his opinions. I asked him if he would prefer an iPad, and he said no. He has used the same MBA for 5 years, and that's what he prefers. Of course, a public school district isn't going to buy MBAs for the entire student body.

The iPad is one of the most amazing products ever, they got it so right with the 10hr battery life. But the iOS needs to jump into the 21st century because this 2007 smartphone OS on steroids won't cut it in the future.

I am really interested why are you more impressed with the newer iPad? Isn't it just a faster version of the older models? Also the 10.5 is heavier I believe.

iOS 11 is what sold the device for me.... once I saw what was in the beta.. I decided to pick up an iPad. If iOS 11 would've came out last year... I'd probably own the previous model. But since it will be released along side the newer 10.5 model, I decided to get that model. And I've been happy with it!

When you say it's heavier.. you do realize the weight difference is so small that you can barely feel it. It feels like I'm holding a light notebook. And I love the larger screen size and smaller bezel too.

I believe Windows will still be dominating in most markets given their nearly unparalled backwards compatibility and the ability to use cheaper hardware with older versions (especially Win 7). Let's face it: Apple has always been a luxury, if not premium upmarket company. Back when I was in elementary school in the early '90s, our computer lab had about 30-35 Apple IIe's for educational software and games like the classic Oregon Trail & Carmen Sandiego, etc and 3 more expensive desktop Macs. I believe they were LCIIs/Performas. Macs are much cheaper these days and are pretty ubiquitous but back in the '90s they were really machines for the upper middle class especially the Quadra/Power PC Macs that SVA and other private schools had in their comp labs back in the Photoshop 3-4 days. At $3-4k in '90s dollars these were really only for the rich or media professionals. The average Windows Pentium desktop decently configured was about $1500-1700 with a bundle of software. Although nominal prices have dropped the situation is the same. A comparable Windows machine is usually, but not always half the price of a Mac.
