They are 2 different markets.

However, Apple has tried desperately to link it to the netbook market. We all know that Apple's core strength relies on creating markets from thin air. They've just done that with the iPad (although I still see no utility in it whatsoever), and as there is a small link to the netbook market, they've tried to exploit it to the maximum.

So the mp3 market and smartphone market were created out of thin air right?

Is this really a direct relationship or a coincidence? I'm thinking the latter b/c the netbook and iPad really don't have a lot of shared features. It seems to me the netbook market is fizzling b/c it's really a niche market that is now over-saturated. I don't think iPad buyers are the same ones that were previously considering netbooks.

When the iPad was announced, netbook proponents were loud in their rejection of the iPad b/c it didn't have Flash, external ports, was a closed system, etc. However, early iPad adopters dismissed all those points as being unessential to the iPad's utility.

The iPad will likely continue to grow, not on hype, but on the quality of apps. The app market is still young, but should be significantly more mature by holiday season. What is there to keep the netbook market growing, especially when an i3 laptop can be had for nearly the same price as a decent netbook?

However, Apple has tried desperately to link it to the netbook market.

Please cite when Apple has done this? From what I've seen Apple has said the iPad is not a netbook. Sure, it's said the iPad is better (more usable) than a netbook, consistent with Steve Jobs' statements that netbooks suck and wants nothing to do with them. I don't think that qualifies as trying to hook on to the netbook's coattails. Apple is saying it has a better, different coat.

Year-over-year sales growth can give you completely stupid results. Take the month when the iPhone 3GS was introduced: Enormous YOY sales growth for that month because everyone was waiting for it. Wait a year: YOY sales growth will probably be negative for the same month one year later, because you are comparing sales for a normal month with the sales in the month the phone was introduced. ...

Other than the fact that Apple releases their iPhones about the same time every year.

This is proof however that Apple has an illegal monopoly on cool stuff. Companies that sell boring junk can't compete with Apple. Apple needs to be forced to sell lots of boring junk just like everyone else. They also need to give some of their better ideas to the competition so they can be cool too.

Instead of just buying a MacBook and carrying it where ever they go, people will buy an iMac AND an iPad. It might shift some people away from a laptop to two products -- a desktop and a tablet, but Apple will keep the iPad dependent on a connection to a computer. So, they will sell a computer somewhere in the deal.

While my 2008 macbook is running perfectly fine, and I will be buying an ipad shortly. I do now feel I will be in this camp, when I am ready to upgrade from / replace my macbook. I mean I already found apps for the ipad to replace 99% of what I do on my macbook. the only thing I need a real computer for is:

1. updating my iweb website.
2. Mass Storage
3. Heavier apps for photo editing, video editing.
4. Larger databases and running virtual machines (for my 1 or 2 windows apps I still use, that I will probably find a replacement for eventually - if /when they come out).
5. Syncing my ipad.
7. Using Calibre to convert my PDF's to epub formats so I can put them in my ibooks.

Ughhh. I hate these comparisons.

Netbook sales are dying down because more people who want them now have them, as time goes by. This is a natural progression of sales - same thing is happening with the iPhone.

I won't buy an iPad, because it doesn't have what I need/want. I don't want a closed system, I want to install, run, what I want. I also want a very portable form factor. Speed and power are not that important, since this is a secondary machine - used mainly for browsing, email, youtube, etc.

What I want, like may others, is a Mac netbook, running OS X.

...So I got one :) Picked up a Dell mini 10v, and an hour later I had a mini macbook - everything works flawlessly. And, it cost $250.

Netbooks really do completely suck. I used to have one, and it was about as good as you could get for a netbook. It was fully loaded - 11.6 inch LED screen, 2 gigs of RAM, a huge HD, integrated webcam, etc.

It performed so poorly that even web surfing was an utter chore. I got rid of it as soon as possible.

An iPad, on the other hand, has way less RAM, less storage capacity, less input ports and outputs. An iPad has a smaller screen and no keyboard. There's not even a camera.

However, the iPad is DOZENS OF TIMES more useful on an everyday basis. It may not be a replacement for a real computer, but it will make me even more connected than I already am. A netbook only served to make me frustrated and despise my normal websurfing and emailing experience.

So because netbook sales are falling at the same time the sales of a NEW PRODUCT are increasing, we determine there's a direct correlation?

PLEASE.

I sold my netbook, got a ultra-portable laptop. Do I show up in those statistics? Nope!

I don't see why people like this don't just save up, sell a few junk items and buy a $799 brand new MacBook instead. Is that too large for you?

Thats exactly what my wife and I did. An iMac for "computing" and an iPad to surf and whatnot on the couch.

This article is very poor.

Netbooks growth rate is still positive, every product will stabilize.

Same with iPods...no one is saying that some other mp3 company is stealing millions of iPods sales...its just the fact that if you don't have an iPod by now, you probably don't want one.

Please show us a chart with actual unit sales. How many were sold every month? Overlay a chart with iPad sales (which would be rather boring: 1 million sold in April 2010, that's it). _Then_ we can look at it and draw any meaningful conclusions. What this chart shows is just absolutely pointless.

Just because a sale isn't made for a netbook doesn't mean a sale should be made for an iPad. It is very possible that the people not buying netbooks simply have yet to buy an iPad.

That said, I do think the chart assumes a little too much.

I don’t see myself buying an iMac or any desktop for that matter…ever. I haven’t had a desktop for about 4 years now, and I don’t have a desire to be chained to a desk, nor need for a powerhouse or a huge display. The standard disclaimer applies: this is applicable to me; others may have different needs.

Also, I don’t see myself buying an iPad anytime soon, but I wouldn’t say never. My notebook (yes it’s an iBook G4) is end of life and needs to be replaced by a new macBook pro, and I want a new iPhone when they come out. I don’t see myself having the extra cash or any real need of an iPad at this time.

I can totally see this as my Macbook Pro replaced my desktop computer. Now the iPad could replace what I originally got a laptop for.

In the future, I don't see myself ever getting another desktop again.

your ipad can do everything a MBP can?

Steve Jobs hit on the biggest net book problem, yeah they work, but not as well as they should.

The iPad takes the lap space of a netbook but fills the keyboard area in with more touchscreen, whats not to want?!

Well in my case I can see myself using it more as a versatile "remote" allowing me to remote desktop to my mac thats in the den, while im sitting on the couch, it just gives me more freedom,

or turn my sub down/up when I'm eating at the restaurant below my apartment

This is a different class of machine -- the tablet is REPLACING the netbook as an ultra-portable. The only "cannibalizing" here is fewer sales of ipod touch devices. Otherwise, this is just competitive advantage.

Sorry to be a stickler, but the term was wrong.

I agree, the term "cannibalizing" is used when a company "eats up" or kills it's own product by offering a different product that replaces something that they are still trying to sell. The term's correct in the case of the iPod Touch, but its the wrong term if used to compare how the Apple, with the iPad, is stealing business from other companies.

I personally don't think the iPad competes in the same market space as a netbook. However, this new iPad accessory is going to blur the line for sure.

Do you have a big screen TV? I use my 24" iMac (which, perhaps at the next iteration, I'll replace with a 27" iMac) as a de facto television to watch all non-live programming. The screen quality is far superior to any TV on the market and I can multitask while doing it. Not two feet away I have a 42" LED TV that just sits there when there isn't breaking news or a baseball game that I can't stream.

Just wait for the next set of news:

Scientists discovered that planet Earth is still turning all due to Apple's iPad!

Bloody ridiculous :D

I think the memory limitation is the biggest negative of the iPad (to me at least).

Looking at the size of the 80 gig classic iPod i feel like they coudl've slipped a HDD in at that size.

But who knows, i could be wrong i'm not an engineer. Or maybe the iPhone OS simply wasn't made to interact with a HDD.

Well I figure that Apple really wants cheaper flash for the iPhone product line, so buy slapping it in yet another product line (I just noticed you can get 512 gb of flash on the macbook pro now?!)

The popularity of the iPad will help bring the price down of flash memory in the future . . i hope
