The first iPad became obsolete pretty damn fast. That’s because the hardware was improved so quickly and iOS left it behind.

iPad 2 was great. I had an A7 iPad, then got the 12.9” 2nd gen Pro in 2018.

7+ years is pretty good for a device I still use every day. The Battery is total ****, but I still use it.

Incredible device for its time, but what was really incredible was the leap from the iPad to the iPad 2. The iPad 2 was on sale forever and for good reasons. Awesome tablet for 2011. Way more functional than the OG iPad.
I’m glad to hear you say that. I skipped the original, trying to convince myself that my iPhone already does everything. But the second version was too good to pass up. You made me feel smarter 🤭

Yes. Today it is a big phone with multitasking. That is the utter genius of Apple.
Agreed. It is just a "Bigger iPhone" but therein lays the genius of the device - it's a device that although nobody had seen, it was a device with which they were already intimately familiar with thanks to the iPhone.

It truly ushered in the post-pc revolution.

Here's to many more great years of iPads

I owned several iPads including the very first one. The first one was too heavy, but Apple finally got it right by the 3rd version with Retina display. I had iPad in my life in the hopes it would encourage me to read books. It didn’t happen and it ended up being a product category that’s not for me. I think iPads are amazing. They’re just not for me.
I applaud you for being able to see the merits of the device even though it’s not something for you.

First one I got was in 2011, the iPad 2. Then the iPad Air 2, first gen iPad Pro, 11" 2018 iPad Pro, 11"
M2 iPad Pro, and now the 13" M4 iPad Pro. Thinking about returning the 13" M4 for an 11" M5 (for the same price). Thoughts?

I remember that during the iPad 2 presentation Steve said that concurrence was not able to do something closer to the iPad 1 and they were presenting the iPad 2, which was better in every possible way. It’s a pity to see how things changed as now Apple is years behind of the rest in pretty much every new product line

I have fond memories of my third gen iPad, but I mainly used it for the first year and not much afterwards.

It seemed ok on iOS 6 in terms of speed, but I didn't really use it on iOS 7 which I'm guessing is when many of the slow GPU issues became noticeable.

The original iPad felt amazing when it came out, but the second gen iPad blew it out of the water.

I miss some of the apps on iPad OS that just disappeared over the years. I will always miss Infinity blade which was pleasure to play on the iPad. May be there are many similar games but miss that one the most.
I still have the keyboard accessory for the original iPad. I remember my friend telling me that it is a nice device but the RAM will be limiting factor which was so true for that time.

Not related, but Macrumors should create "Anniversary" thread rather than separate thread for each anniversary. Not sure if that would make sense.

What a fantastic product & OS. I use my 11” OLED iPad Pro as my daily driver for most everything. It certainly gets the most used of all my Apple products. 👍🏻

("The initial reception to the Apple Watch was mixed. While many praised its minimalistic design and advanced display, others questioned its potential to replace laptops.")

I believe the key to the iPad’s success was the price.

Analysts were expecting the price to be between $800 and $1000; during the keynote, Steve Jobs even flashed $999 on the screen, hitting the price rumors head on. Everyone was collectively stunned when $499 was revealed as the true entry-level price.

Edit: video of keynote

The question remains: are we going to have an iPad-price moment with Apple’s foldable?
I hope so. If we can hit sub-$1500 with 256GB of storage, it will sell very well. For me, it’s very difficult to justify for $2000 with a worse camera system. Hopefully the iPhone Air helped to reset Apple’s expectations of what people are willing to pay for a thin device that has a comparatively weak camera system for the price. Obviously the Fold is way more useful than the Air, but double the price? I hope not!

My Dad and I waited forever in line to get one of these release day.
Later, after unboxing it and showing it off, I was thinking wow I should be investing all my money in Apple.

Sadly I did not.

The iPad is one of the few items that has completely dominated its market segment.

The competition was initially non existent as they all essentially gave up when they saw the iPad.

The truth is all the iPad competitors are inferior even now. The locked down nature of the iPad could be seen as a strength, the consistent interface is a plus. The Android world is still the Wild West.

In order to decide if an iPad was right for me I bought one. Then I bought an iPad mini. Each of these has a certain usefulness as secondary device for me.

What's truly impressive is the great benefit Apple realizes from the iPad lineup. With a very small bill of materials required to make an iPad, especially compared to either an iPhone or MacBook, the huge profit margin allows Apple to smile and laugh all the way to the bank.

Promoting an iPad as a laptop replacement is another stroke of genius on Apples part. It’s great to be Apple and satisfying to be an Apple shareholder.

The next tablet I get will probably be an Android one. I have an iPPM1 now, which I'm happy with but I want to have a proper computer UI whenever I use it for laptop style stuff. So you either have Samsung Dex or Nomone Desktop with Debian. In that way you can get both great touch capabilities combined with powerful desktop usage.

Xiaomi is also making very powerful tablets these days.

Xiaomi will provide zero ongoing support. No-one will know or care to fix hardware issues and OS support will be abandoned by Xiaomi at the first opportunity.

Apart from that, yeah they are great.

The reason the iPad received so many tablet optimized apps is because Apple had strict rules for developers writing Apps for it. They did this specifically to avoid the iPad running nothing but “phone Apps”.

On the Android side, Google hadn’t even finished making their tablet version of Android (Honeycomb) and vendors were in such a rush they released tablets running Froyo or Gingerbread. The first Samsung Galaxy Tab ran Froyo and was garbage.

From that point on Google lost control of Android on Tablets and has been trying to reel in it since.
