Ohhh I see. Thank you!

So instead of the often used statement "Labor is cheap in China... it would be expensive anywhere else..."

It should be "This type of labor is ONLY available in China... and would be IMPOSSIBLE anywhere else..."

That's quite a different tune than what people usually say here... :)

I'm gonna bookmark Tim's quote... it will be useful when this discussion comes up again!

Yes, it's a cascade effect. People who think it's because of labor costs have no idea.

A good example is LCD manufacturing. It's not just about assembling the LCD module. The upstream components that are used to manufacture the LCD module itself are all in China, because the country has focused decades on industrial production. An LCD module is manufactured using:

  • Chemical resists
  • Glass substrates
  • ITO glass
  • Polarizer films
  • Alignment films
  • Color filters
  • Backlight modules
  • Light guide plates
  • Driver ICs

How many university graduates in the USA have the desire, much less the experience to perform R&D or manufacturing on the above mentioned items? There's not a single LCD manufacturing plant on the continent.

When Tim Cook talks about the skill available in China, he's talking about this.

I honestly feel like I’ve had Covid-19 the past few days. Easily the worst flu I’ve ever had. Felt like I was dying my body hurt so bad everywhere. Fortunately I’m in a central state with no reports and I work from home so it’s really unlikely. But wow it was bad. At one point when I was coughing it felt like I was drowning. Seem to have turned a corner after waking up this afternoon.

Makes me wonder how many fit and healthy people are carrying it and just think it’s a really bad flu? Somehow my kids haven’t gotten it so far which is amazing. All this stuff worries me since my daughter had been hospitalized for respiratory issues in the past (RSV) and has asthma so she seems more susceptible to Covid-19 possibly killing her.
You didn’t think to get tested???
Last week I sold all of my very-long held AAPL stock after
1) a trip to Singapore. You can really feel the economic crunch there. And
2) Gruber’s post about Apple’s employees unable to fly to China for new products preparations.

Apple’s story remains strong (“the best business I know”, Warren Buffett), but we’re in for a rough ride.
good move. Alas I did not. Have taken a very serious hit. So far.... I don’t see a recovery happening any time soon. Maybe not even this year

I had the flu in early December. I actually lost consciousness in the middle of the night and was out for about 30 minutes while everyone else was asleep. When I lost consciousness , I hit my head on the sink and split my eyebrow. I had never lost consciousness before then in my entire life. The flu was bad; I was down for two weeks, and I had the flu shot in early October.

Labour, rent, electricity etc.
All these contribute to higher prices because there is a difference in China and NA (or rest of the world)
Hence why almost everything is made in China. Sad reality
Those workers live on few $ a day. So the money you spend on lunch each day is probably the same the person earns in a day/week.

Calculate other costs etc. and suddenly you have a different story.
Hence why only Mac Pro is made in USA as the product itself is super expensive so the cost offset is kinda hidden. And only for the NA market. The other markets are made in China.

Labor cost is one thing. The other portion is the flexibility to mobilize labor between hot season (namely product launch period) and regular season.

Think of iPhone 11 Launch. The peak launch volume required far more labor than when the hype is smoothing down.

In NA,

a) where do you hire so many labors to prepare for peak volume?
b) how you place those excessive labor when the demand normalized downward?

The way things are looking, we might not even get a release this year. I held on to my xsmax but now im really thinking of going to the 11max

Nah. I work from home and order my groceries so I don’t leave the house much when it’s snowy or cold in the winter. Can’t think of anyone I know who has been to China. Also, like I said, I’m far away from the affected areas. My wife got over it fairly quickly (although she doesn’t often get sick) and I’m still suffering. I think if it seems like I might be getting pneumonia I’ll see a doctor. No reason to panic yet.

So this could be the year that they will not release in October. I bet you we have a November release this year.

You’re right, it might force a November Launch, production typically is slated for Mid-summer (July/early August). In retrospect, the 2017 iPhone X launched in November, a slight delay won’t affect Apple long-term. But still, November 2020 is a long way out, _a lot_ can change between now and then.

A lot of other viruses are circulating (flu, H1N1, gastroenteritis, etc.) you may have caught one of them. Staying at home is probably the safest at this point if you're sick. You can always call the emergency number if needed. Stay safe everyone!

Can u imagine the pent up demand Apple will have to deal with if released in nov/dec? it will be an absolute frenzy

How is your overall health to begin with? You might need to get yourself checked for underlining factors.

If there’s a bright side, maybe with an extra month the software will be more ready for release when the phones arrive.

Don't count on an iPhone 12 till possibly January. Its new hardware and software as well as 5G implementation, which is tough to do with suppliers and Foxconn closed or working at 30% capacity.
Health First! ……………….iPhone NEXT:rolleyes:

I say no iPhone 12 until Bearimy. As long as we’re just making stuff up.

Let’s pause a moment and reflect back on a typical iPhone launch cadence.

Preorders go live in Sept. If you’re not clicking ‘Buy’ within the first 3-seconds of the opening bell, you’ve missed the first wave of devices and are staring at Oct. delivery dates. Within 60-seconds, your looking at Nov. deliveries. An hour in and you’re into the next calendar year. At this point, panic sets in and people start paying other people to spend the next 7 days of their lives holding spots in line, in hopes of scoring a launch day device at Apple Stores around the world. It’s not until Feb./Mar. before supply/demand begins to even think about leveling off.

And that’s with an absolutely pristine production cycle.

You think these forums were intolerable then? It’s breathtaking to ponder what will become of this site come fall. The sheer volume of posts expressing ship date fury, calling for Tim’s head and threatening to leave Apple for Samsung will absolutely melt MR’s servers. Arn will have to take to Twitter to announce he’s taken the site offline and returning to his medical practice. Unprecedented nerd pandemonium will ensue. Hostages will be taken. Markets will crumble. Trump will blame CNN. Prepare accordingly.

That said, I still think Apple manages to hit a late Sept. presale window. Only this time around, supply levels will be so low that with 3-seconds of the opening bell, delivery dates will slip into the new year. The nerd rage will be deafening. Buttering my popcorn now.

Maybe move production to another country is a good idea? Why support the economy of a country that allows wild animal consumption with none to little regulation and consequently is a haven for dangerous contagious diseases? Not to mention pollution. China is destroying our planet and Apple is an accomplice if they keep their production lines there.

Seriously, who the f cares? COVID-19 spreading like wildfire across central Europe. Offices & schools in London & across the UK shutting down too. This is going to get nasty.

Apple's financials will have to take a bloody nose for 2020.

I may buy the dip. But I think it's going lower before it makes any sort of come back.

Even after the virus has passed, the psychological effects will remain for at least a year (or product cycle). If not longer. China's dense population, proximity to supply chain partners, and expedited growth all appear to be mid range disadvantages time wise.

If, as some are saying (and I am not saying this, as I it's an accusation I don't take lightly) the virus was accidentally released to the population via containment errors in China's only Level 4 Bio containment lab the repercussions will be far beyond the impact of the virus itself. We could be in Tienanmen square territory politically, then all Chinese bets are off.

The potential ripple effects are staggering. One report is workers at the lab were selling the meat of infected test animals to merchants in the local market. If so, simply staggering.

Sounds more like influenza unless you've recently traveled to China or been on the Diamond Princess.
