Samsung has something similar since Note 2. The screen stays on if it detects you are looking at the screen.

Thats a start but i also woud like to have the feature where i do not have to unlock my iPhone in "save locations". I have it on my work phone and i love it. Tie it to a connected and in range Apple Watch, even better!

If there was one rumor I were to believe reported today, it would be this one. I could easily see Apple implementing a function where it mutes sounds if you are looking at the display, because it's the smallest features that make the biggest differences in the iPhone experience. This rumor has Apple written all over it and I say it's accurate simply because it's a convenience.

HomePod firmware: the gift that keeps on giving.
[doublepost=1502308337][/doublepost]
Maybe it's all Homepod marketing for Apple, what better way to get more Homepod press than to bake in a few Easter eggs?
Not exactly the same, but I suspect a lot of folks are forgetting that the HomePod firmware may very well contain support for exploratory/experimental features that don't end up in the shipping iPhone/ATV5/Watch/whatever. Apple could even perfect a feature and decide to leave it out at the last minute because they can't get the necessary part in quantity nearly-a-million-a-day, or at the price they wanted, or it fails some unrelated test, or it uses too much power or generates too much heat. Doezens of reasons why a tested feature might not appear.

I love these leaks but hate them at the same time. This would’ve been an awesome announcement nobody was expecting.
I feel you.

Can hardly watch keynotes for real revelations anymore, but neither for the on-stage performance and magic of the show.

One of the few things I still consistently love about Apple keynotes is my good old man Hair Force One.

At least last WWDC was actually quite a good show again in a long series of boredom, so maybe there is some hope.

If you’re not looking at the screen, your phone will lock. When you look at it again or pick up your phone, it will unlock and you resume where you left off. If this works seamless, it will be amazing!

more snooping, surveillance and controlling people

you can't trust these evil corps: Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple

please add more to the list as you please

This is why Apple always waits until they have perfected something before adding it to the iPhone.
Any other company (like Samsung) would have just added the iris scanner to their phone and then only use it for unlocking the device, but when Apple adds it they also ask themselves "what else can we do with the face scanner?" and now here you go!

Can't wait until they finally show off everything the new iPhone can do!

I'm excited for what the iPhone will do and what new features it'll add, but your comment is ignorant and disingenous

Samsung's exact problem is the opposite of what you say. They throw literally every cockeyed brained idea at the device and see what sticks.

Samsung's been using the front camera for several different similar features for years. For example, Since the Note II at least (anecdote since I had it), there was the feature "Smart Stay" which would detect where you were looking and keep the display on if it detected you were looking at it. Or current "easy sreen on" which uses motion to detect when to turn on the display if you can't interact directly. They even had a really bad implementation that you could turn on that would track your eyes and scroll webpages as your eyes scrolled down.

This would be ok,, but "AttentionAwareObserver" jumps out as a IPhone will be watching you "all the time"

I can see people driving off the road trying to simply unlock their iPhone when only 1 finger and hardly a glance would have sufficed. I cannot see how this is simpler than 1 finger, but I'll wait and see.

To me this is a feature in search of a need. Prediction: Touch ID will be back in the iPhone 9.

What’s easier than authenticating with a finger? Never having to authenticate at all. If you can see your phone, your phone can see you. It’s passive and continuous authentication done without needing your intervention.

If you’re driving, you shouldn’t be using your phone at all but in that case, Face ID is far safer because it doesn’t need you to do anything. If you have your phone dashboard mounted, it can see you and will be authenticated the entire time you’re driving, never asking you to unlock your phone to read you messages for example.

what I'd much rather see is my iPad to automatically pause videos as soon as I fall asleep.

The end of all "where do I pick up last night's show?" questions.

"While many observers remain skeptical that Touch ID can be replaced by a facial recognition system that's equally secure"

...it's probably more secure. It requires you to remove everything extra and then twist your face into the same kind of grimace you had when you decided to lock your phone with your face image. And if your face it a bit puffy in the morning, **** happens. Just wait until it settles before checking your messages.

What many observers are complaining about is the inconvenience this causes compared to touchID rather than the security.

I'm still convinced it can be bypassed easily by the hackers as soon as it's released, but I'm pretty sure anyone who went through that trouble would be able to unlock the touchID just the same. I'm really, REALLY not looking forward to dangling the phone in front of my face all the time just to be able to check something. Nor am I too happy about it watching me all the time. Especially considering what that'll do to the already-crappy battery life.

You're assuming that this facial recognition system is using the visible spectrum and comparing the same markers we use in our everyday lives to recognize a face. Our human recognition is skin deep for the most part, aside from some basic things like eye spacing, hairline, and visible points on the cheek and jaw. The optical system Apple is using is going to incorporate laser/IR frequencies and possibly UV illumination, based on what the leaks over the past few weeks have shown. Perhaps it will recognize cheek/jaw/brow structure beneath the skin? In that case, it won't make one bit of difference how much a person tries to obscure their face via grimacing or gurning or whatever - Apple FaceID will "see" past that.

Its bad enough that this phone or any other is going to be looking for faces all the time, but to have something with that level of detail constantly on the prowl is definitely going to cause me to elevate my security approach. Never mind me trying to figure out how to disable this "feature" on my phone, apparently I'll need to sequester guests' phones when they're on my property.

Like Touch ID, it will be local. There’ll be a dedicated chip for face authentication like there is the secure enclave today. It doesn’t ever need to send your face anywhere. Authentication happens locally. Touch ID is not always “on the prowl” and neither will Face ID need to be. Touch ID is triggered by the ring around the Home button. Face ID will be triggered by picking up the phone like lift to wake works today. Other actions could trigger it like Hey Siri or tapping the screen to wake your phone while it’s lying on a table.
