Apple will sell loads of iPhones for the foreseeable future as it is only one of two smartphone OS's. Those who don't want Google Android will have to go with Apple iOS. It's that simple.
So, it's time for Apple to bring back the smaller phones.

So with a low price and small screen, the iPhone “SE2” will outsell the 6.1”, much more expensive iPhone 12? Or 11?
IMO, it’s possible but not likely. I think Apple would be quite pleased with selling 28-35M SE2 type phone worldwide, especially if they sold 7M in China (25% of their 2019 total), 7M in India (probably 3x their 2019 total), 3M in all other emerging markets, and 11-18M in US, Europe and Japan. The 28-35M would place solidly #3 or #4 on an annual ranking.

Apple would take that result along with new ecosystem users. I dare say a major part of these will be new iPhone users converted from Android.

Perhaps Apple will say the smaller SE size phone (if there ever is a new one) is really the correct, reliable and more useful alternative to any new small folding phone - fits in your pocket with none of the downsides of current folding phones (Z-Flip, Razr). The flip that doesn’t have to flip.

So with a low price and small screen, the iPhone “SE2” will outsell the 6.1”, much more expensive iPhone 12? Or 11?
Yes. With good marketing, the latest A13 chip and awesome camera with 6 colours to choose from and a starting price of £399. I can see the SE2 becoming the beat selling phone of 2020. In fact it will be sold out in most places come the launch day!

I’m just glad that this data proves we can finally move on from all the “everyone wants the old tiny screens back” chatter around this place. When the best selling phone has a 6.1” display it’s time to leave the 3.5” and 4” screens in the past.

indeed but tell that to the shingling 1% who want’s the SE Successor to still retain a 4 inch screen

Nobody wants 3.4 or 4 inch screens back, and nobody has argued for them. I literally have never seen this once. What I have seen over and over however is that some people want a full-screen device with an iPhone SE/5 (or slightly larger) form factor. Some people like to have a device they can use with one hand. Others don't or don't care, and that's fine – they have those options available. But the fact that the best-selling model had a 6.1" full-screen display while also being the cheapest model in that lineup doesn't prove anything with regard to size when there was no scaled-down full-screen alternative to compare to at a similar price point, and there never has been.

Oh but I’ve seen people bitching for another 4 inch iPhone and it’s really annoying

No they don’t. You can even see the iPhone 8 on the list. I can see the new SE2 outselling all the phones this year!

I don’t, especially with the situation regarding the Coronavirus but that is still too early at this stage

XR wasn't overpriced with all the great specs. One of the main reasons why I chose XR instead of iPhone X os XS, or other overpriced ones.

I Actually thought the XR was priced perfectly, and then Apple dropped a surprise by reducing the price by $50 for the iPhone 11. Honestly, as much as I am one of those that likes to have the ‘best model’ offered in the lineup, which if you asked me personally, I would probably tell somebody the ’Pro’ simply because of the camera, but in terms of best value, absolutely the iPhone 11.

If these numbers are true, it looks like Apple found a sweet spot with iPhone XR and iPhone 11 functionality and pricing. It also suggests that most people don't care about OLED vs. LCD.

I guess its the pricing. Paying 1649 Euros for a iPhone is ridiculous! Thats why I am on my second iPhone 7. ;)

It is curious to read how forum members seek confirmation bias. What this list demonstrates is that the iPhone 8 (4.7”) is still selling well to be included in this top 10 list. Things to consider SE has significantly older hardware across the spectrum compared to iPhones 8. SE not even sold on Apple online or in store.

Another interesting bit is that the 8 Plus did not make the list, the price difference between a 8 Plus and XR is marginal for a larger screen even though the resolution and no telephoto camera. The cost increment for storage is also minimal. XR also was heavily discounted with promotions early last year due to sales number concerns and continues as the budget phone offered for free by many carriers.

Difference between 11 and XR to most is not worth the extra cost. Does that mean the ultra-wide lens is a flop or are customers more concerned with price and possibly colours. Other than that not much has changed from a year ago between the two.

What is strange is that the Pro model phones are near the bottom of the list. This would indicate that there is not much to differentiate and the value to be had with an XR or 11 is well accepted by customers for what is being offered.

At its initial price point the XR was overpriced however once discounts and promotions were offered and applied the price pill was easier to accept. Why opt for the 11 when the XR is more affordable and similar in specs. If the UW lens is not important to you and for most people on a budget this comes as no surprise.

Price, performance, features, colour, promotions and discounts is what seems to have resonated with customers in 2019.

I’m also glad this data proves we can finally move on from people wanting to buy a neon orange iPhone. I mean, they don’t sell a neon orange iPhone, but they don’t sell a modern smaller-screened iPhone either, so why not just make wild assumptions about that too? /s
While we are talking about strange trains of thought: Actually Apple _does_ sell „a modern smaller-screened iPhone”. It’s a bit weak on battery and CPU power, lacks cameras and its usability is questionable at times, due to the really small screen. But it is wildly popular with people. It’s called “Apple Watch LTE”. :-D

I'm not surprised by Apple's performance on this list.

Apple is the #3 smartphone OEM in the world by sales... so they obviously sell a lot of phones in general. Plus they only sell a handful of individual models... and it makes sense that their affordable iPhone XR had the top spot.

But what is a surprise is that not a single "flagship" Samsung phone is on that list.

For all the advertising Samsung does... and all the hullabaloo about cameras, OLED displays, reverse wireless charging, tiny bezels, etc... it's their budget models that sell the most.

A phone had to sell at least 15.2 million units to even be on this list.

So that means no Galaxy S10 model sold 15.2 million units throughout the entire year. That's wild.
I would think the Samsung flagships would at least be in the top 20.

You’re kidding right? By far, most people want larger phones. It’s not even close. Combining the 2018 and 2019 numbers, iPhone 8 sold 49 million units. Sounds like a lot, but it’s 12% of Apple’s sales. 88% of users bought larger phones.

Apple knows exactly how many 4.7” phones it can sell. Based on orders placed with suppliers, they expect to sell up to 30 million “SE2” the first year. 15% of sales.

Until there is an orange to orange comparison, we can speculate all we want and get nowhere
As a reminder, Apple currently do not even sell a SE sized phone with the latest specs or even last year’s specs.
On a side note,I would have gotten the SE at launch day to replace my 5S if it was launched at the same time as the 6s instead of months later.

In 2019, XR/11 sold almost 85 million units, 11 Pro/Pro Max another 33 million. That’s 100 million more units than the 18 million the iPhone 8 sold. An “SE2” (updated 8) this year will do better, Apple’s expecting somewhere around 30 million.

Sure, no doubt there’s going to be great demand for a $399 iPhone with a current processor and decent camera. And Apple’s happy to sell it—even if 80+% of customers would rather pay 1.5x, 2x or even 3x as much for a larger iphone with higher-end features.

Maybe people with small phones haven’t upgraded yet. There’s no choices, so they are keeping their money.

Your comparison is pretty pointless as the iPhone 8 came out 2017. That’s two and a half years ago. And yet it still managed to sell 18 million last year.

I’m expecting SE2 to sell around 45 million units this year, Apples 30 million estimate is very modest.

An SE-sized iPhone will never have the specs of an XR/11 or a 11 Pro. The SE has a very small battery, about 1/2 the capacity of the iPhone 11. There’s not enough room for a modern camera array, or even a notch for FaceID.

All those features are possible only on a larger-sized phone. Maybe one day customers will want small phones again, and will be willing to accept the compromises inherent in a small form factor. But right now, customers mostly want larger iPhones 🤷‍♂️

No offense, but I think Apple’s in a much better position to know their customers. That’s why they’re going to be offering not only a 6.7” iPhone, but also a 5.4” model that’ll be smaller than the “SE2”.

Fixed it for you.
Millions of users haven’t upgraded from an SE, 6, 6s, or 7.
Sure, millions haven’t. But millions have. Someone bought 120 million 5.8, 6.1 and 6.5 inch phones last year. And the 110 million 5.5-6.5 inch phones in 2018.

Like I said, a $399 updated 8 will have great demand. But it’ll be far outsold by the 5.4-6.7” models.
