"Apple's iWatch Said to Feature Round Design,..."

Yes, but will it...possibly...maybe...

...tell time?

Meanwhile, in some backwater engineering lab, a wailing sound is heard, "I'm not going to tell Mr. Cook it can't tell time! You tell him!"

"Oh no, YOU tell him!"

"I know, let's get Jony to tell him!"

What exactly has google "invented" ? Glasses that nobody use? Google + (week copy of facebook) google docs (week copy of MS office) I feel they're getting a ton of credit recently for being innovative but I don't see it.

I look beyond on the discussions about what's been used on this very moment. No, the Google Glass is not, yet, a global hit. I'm not surprised about this, just look at the price of that thing. And to be fair, I'm not interested in wearing Google Glass, but I can imagine that ten years from now Google Glass could be a regular thing you see people wearing on the streets. That aside, Google is testing on a large scale with new ways of technology that very well could be groundbreaking in the future to come. Apple is also testing a lot, but Google, with the integration of distributing information trough tiny amount of glass and the whole car industry development, is taking lead of developing new industries that could very well have more impact in the (near) future to come then Apple. The iWatch is "fun" but besides that it's not groundbreaking. I might buy such an iWatch because I like to sport a lot and it very well might help me with gathering information about my achievements. Fun, but hardly a "must have". With the globalization and serious environmental issues generations to come have to deal with large epic groundbreaking new ways of actually living goes beyond the ability of knowing how many miles you've run so far.

Apple is more focused on devises that are fun to use, with the exception of the iPhone maybe. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products, but I'm beyond and way to old to get into the "which company is better then..." discussion. But I consider research and development in new cars and how to distribute information a bit more groundbreaking.

Again, I love Apple products, I'm using a Mac Pro (not yet the new one) for myself for work and my girlfriend and myself using both an iPad Aid, both an iPhone 5 and I'm using a mac mini as a media server. We also have a MacPro laptop, so no intention to bash Apple here..

you said the key word there - testing - google is testing a ton of stuff and they're vocal about it - Apple, I'm sure, is testing a lot of stuff also but they're very quiet about it. so to say that Google is inventing and Apple isn't is a bit ridiculous (it would also be nice if I learned to spell weak)

You're missing the point, it's not that I deny both companies are testing a lot of things, that's not the point, it's about 'what' both companies are testing, not about how much. In my opinion Google is busy exploring fields that are more groundbreaking then Apple is exploring. I find an electronic watch less appealing in this context then a self driving car or zeppelings that can connect people to the internet in area's where there is none.

You are making it a race who's done more, but that's something I'm not interested in, I care more about "what" may become of the fields both companies are exploring, big difference.

I wasn't necessarily trying to say who's more - it's just that wall st and the world think apple isn't innovating and google is. my point is we don't know what apple is researching. The home automation rumor just came out. What about the stuff they're doing with desk/lap tops? we don't know what they're including in the next version of os X or iOS? how do you know what they're doing with the rumored watch - we haven't seen anything yet.

Im with you on this. Really wanted a band like the concept art we've seen, that way you still get to wear your watch and have the band on the other wrist. Going for a watch design really cuts down on the number of people looking to purchase.

I don't want to wear the same watch as everyone.

Watch is not like a phone.
Watches are one of the only fashion accessories for men and they are veblen goods.

If apple designed a fantastic pair of shoes, clothes, bags or cars, would people buy these?
I'm sure some would but it would not get much traction among many loyal Apple customers, because people do not always want the same thing as everyone else.
There is a reason why many people do not want to buy track homes.

The concept of any Iwatch ( ipad nano with a strap ) will flop. People's preferences for a large screen pocket computer (iphone) are now firmly established.

It won't flop

We need to get over the idea that a watch is an appropriate device for "content".

It's never going to be a good experience to read emails, or even text messages, on such a display.

That's not what the iWatch will be about - Apple are smarter than that.

+1

Will it be retina!?

Wonder what will constitute a retina resolution with a circular display..
????

Fair enough. To be clear, I don't state Apple isn't inventing anything, they do all tough "inventions" are, in some cases, controversial. Just like Google and so many other companies Apple too often claims to have invented things while they actually existed all ready. In the case of the iPhone it's no invention of the machine in my humble opinion but rather clever thinking instead by combining several existing inventions together. Cleverness can change the world too :)

In that context the Google car isn't an invention either, it's a "car" but with a very smart computer on board. But just think about the idea IF the world, or the majority / good part of it would actually use such cars instead of the regular cars? That would have a tremendous impact on the environment.

So yes, now to think of it, invention or no invention is within the eye of the beholder in many cases.

Very true.

I can't state I do know, I also rely my stagings based on merely rumors. But as far the rumors go I do think Google is busy "inventing" more controversial or rather more new stuff that actually "could" change the scene on how humans using devices in a more dramatic way then Apple does right now based on "rumors". The "smart" car and Google Glass is more challenging in my point of view then a bigger iPhone or a watch with several capabilities. And if the watch will be round, as rumors go, then I find that a bit conservatives, instead of coming out with an all new kind of experience a device around your wrist it's just a round watch with possible a leather band or made from metal of your own choosing like regular watches. Could still be great looking and still be an add on on some sort but my first impression of this news says that it doesn't appeal to me that much.

But yes, you're right, that is also based on rumors. Apple might as well come out with something entirely new or even with a round iWatch but one that does do new stuff in a way people couldn't imagine being possible and within that context being revolutionary in a way. Let's just hope Apple will surprise and does come up with something really daring.

I think the point I'm trying to make, general speaking, is whether Apple or Google or any other company is coming up with something "daring" and "revolutionary" rather then something people already are aware of but just with a bit more bling to it....

Look, for example, to all these inventions people from all over the world coming up with on several kick starters projects? I see Apple paying millions or even billions in Beats headphones to regain more sales in the long run on selling music and music based products if that would be headphones or streaming music services. But that's not investing in a revolutionary new asset but rather in a "extra" all ready existing business (Spotify). I would very much like to see that Apple is not only investing in ways to enable some kind of boost in sales on the long run but also in business that are truly trying to chance the world. Why making investments in a platform where home security devices could jump into while such platforms all ready exist. Why not come up with some kind of self made Apple device(s) that truly change the field of home security just because of the capabilities that devices is offering? Why gamble on people "wanting" existing devices with Apple support?

Again, all based on rumors, I sure hope I'm mistaken here. But so far I haven't seen any changes made by Apple that shows signs that Apple will come up with something entirely revolutionary. Let's hope I'm wrong here :apple:

p.s. sorry for the long answer, I just love to drift away with these kind of discussions so to speak.

Very good post.
I share your sentiment regarding apple.

It's been disappointing.
I'm hoping that this thing won't be a watch but a newer category of device aimed at health.
It won't be the first device like that but if it's a category defining product then it will be like the way it used to be with apple.

Love the rounded watch design! i can't imagine that i wear a classic watch style with smart technology inside! OMG!
