Kinetic charging.

Upside - battery life

Nowhere near enough energy creation for the iWatch, AND the hardware necessary to do so is large.

Downside - carpal tunnel surgery

What does does wearing a watch have to do with carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel arises from inflammation of then tendons that attach the wrist flexors to the carpal bones. The inflammation causes impingement of the median nerve, leading to the symptoms of carpal tunnel. Further, the inflammation to the tendons likely arise arises from a genetic predisposition, rather than the tendonitis caused by overuse (keyboards, writing, etc.).

Even more, the kinetic charging (that won't be included in the iWatch) supplies energy as the arm is swinging while walking (imagine a pendulum), not by flexing your wrist against an imaginary dumbbell.

I would venture to um... guess... the following:

Most people that need continuous health monitoring won't do it

and

most people that do continuous health monitoring, don't need it

hense

health monitoring, while interesting, is really just a gimmick

unless they can get insurance (i.e., my premiums and taxes) to pay for it.

wouldn't THAT be a coup for Apple's bottom line.

And it's already tough to find enough mains sockets in a hotel room, generally.

Same thing was said about the iPod AFTER it's unveiling... You want some good comedy reading? Go find the original iPod announcement thread here on MR. There is some good funny stuff in there....

Edit: here you go. You're welcome :) https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apples-new-thing-ipod.500/

I thought I remembered some ridiculous postings after the release of the iPod but this thread is GREAT!!! One of the iconic products of the last decade that made Apple BILLIONS and hardly one in ten Mac Rumor posters had anything good to say about it. Thanks for finding that and posting it, it really does put things in perspective. Just goes to prove for every Apple fanatic there are 10 trolls out there; now who's pathetic?

Yeah -- or, at least, I find it hard to imagine huge numbers of people paying $x00 for a tech-y watch simply because it does "health monitoring" or "sleep monitoring"; even if it does these things better than any consumer devices have in the past (I have a toddler, I already know how I sleep -- poorly). But I also didn't foresee so many people buying iPads, so I guess what do I know.

People are concentrating on the screen itself too much.

I can see the wrist strap itself having sensors. The wrist area is an area with a lot of nerves. BP , Heart rate , body temp.,

Lot's of sensors in those nerves.

Huh?? This makes no sense.

BP is the pressure within blood vessels. BP is controlled by the nervous system, but you don't measure blood pressure by analyzing nerves. Nor do you analyze nerves to obtain HR or temperature.

To measure the above, you measure the effects that the body's nerves have on the body.

HR– many ways to do this, but many pulse points in the wrist and neck are counted for ~10 seconds, and the amount of beats within that timeframe is multiplied by 6, giving you beats per sec..

BP- again, many ways to do this, but most often a sphygmomanometer (BP cuff) is attached to the arm, above the elbow, and using a stethoscope, listened for the existence and absence of Korotkoff sounds.

Temp- skin, oral, and rectal thermometers (among many others) measure body temperature.

You know, this makes me think that perhaps all this development on iWatch began when Steve was so sick from cancer.

Well, it's possible that Apple decided to walk into this territory when Steve became sick because he had to read up on all the health related tech probably.

It's getting so that there's so many rumors about both the watch and the phone, that there's no way to tell what's real anymore. What's next, holographic Siri? lol I think we all need to settle down and really not have any expectations going into the presentation, and just see what Apple has to say.

There's so many people now that probably think if these products don't end up with a flexible display, wireless charging, 5.5", 1 zillion x 1 zillion resolution at 1 zillion ppi, NFC with huge mobile payments agreements, that the products will be marked a fail. Just step back, see what Apple offers, see how it compares to the previous offerings, and judge from there.

"It has a flexible display panel that is protected by a cover composed of sapphire, a type of tougher glass, they said."

No. Synthetic Sapphire is a type of transparent aluminum, there is no glass involved...!

Genuine question: What is so exciting about this? What features are people looking forward to with this "iWatch"? Health monitoring? Is that it?

Or is it one of those "because Apple" things?

Don't worry... at the appropriate time Apple will tell us all why we must have it.

I seem to remember MANY years ago a watch that wound itself as you wore it. I assume there was a tiny weight or something that moved back and forth cranking just a little bit each time so you never had to wind it.

It would be interesting to have something like that where a tiny magnet moved back and forth through tiny coils charging a tiny battery. Dat would be cool.

FYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_quartz + http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_watch :)

Let's not forget the responses after the original ipad has been announced. I will never forget this massive *****torm. Even a year and a half later people were like "nah you don't need this. it's just a toy, without a full OS it's senselss bla bla"

Definitely some upside to accurate personal health sensors. But downside too...Insurance companies will pay hackers millions to find out who the "high risk" patients are based on personal health sensor data.

Also wondering if the watch has effectors as well as sensors....like a way for the NSA to remotely electrocute "undesireables"...

1: Dude - Your humor detector broken?

2: Apple Reportedly is seeking medical device status for it.

----------

Nice!! But I don't think Tim's sense of humor runs to the dark side.

1: Nope... just worried about reading these on an iPhone, and responding.
2: Yes, I know. I was giving a timeframe for such a device, even when there is one in the public in Europe and Canada. Two years, plus, the sensors have to be:
A: For a blood stick, each time
B: For a CGM, once/week.

I think it would be great to have a non-intrusive blood glucose device, but color me jaded after hearing about all of the whiz-bang devices, and seeing the slow progress over the last 40 years has me, well, a non-believer.

And iPad sales are also declining.

The key will be non invasive glucose monitoring when it is ready for the market.

You have my permission not to include a hideous mock up picture with every iWatch story. There is absolutely no chance that any of these pictures will be even remotely accurate. They have nothing at all to do with the story. Let it go.
Glad I'm not the only one. Seconded!

My concern is Life and medical insurance companies somehow getting this data and using it against their customers and not honoring there claims. Seems like a lot of private info for my liking.

Hopefully the info will be used for good and not evil. Wait who am I kidding the world is run by corporations.
