A knighthood is a great honour, given to people who deserve to be recognised for what they have achieved. Sir Jonathan Ive is a consistently excellent and most copied designer and as a British citizen it is right that his country honours his achievements.
The anti-British nature of some of the posts is shameful, considering that since 9/11 British youth has been sacrificed to stand beside our American cousins in two major wars. We are close friends not enemies, we have proved it with our blood and we work closely together in many other fields.
It is bad manners to criticise our awards to our high achievers, especially when the recipient so richly deserves it.

I've just read thru this whole thread and tbh got quite sick of some of the ignorant statements. Its like some people don't get tradition, the honours name stems from centuries of history. Some things don't need to be modernised, especially honours steeped in history given by the head of the nation, its Commonwealth and its Empire (as relatively small as it is, it DOES exist).

Wether you like the idea of the Royal Family or not, they've been around longer than iron ships, longer than most nations in their current form, and as such as have the honours they bestow. At the very least show some respect for another nations tradition, and history.

And for those who don't agree with the honours system period, go tell that to the thousands of ordinary citizens who work in schools, and charities and all other walks of life that work tirelessly for little reward, but get recognised by their country of birth.

Could Jonathan Sue Apple for discrimination if they don't allow him to wear his Suite of Iron to work & meetings everyday? Would it be lawful for him to "let the light" into someone w/ his sword of they insulted His Queen. Probably OK in Britain, not OK in America.

In all seriousness, as an American w/ our Origin & History of freeing ourselves from British Class & all notions of European Imperial elitistism; the idea of Knighthood as a distinction in the 21st Century smells a bit much of an anachronistic, dead & rotting culture from the past.

America has NO elitism or class system!!:rolleyes: God your so stupidly in denial is quite funny....

Congratulations Sir Ivy!

As for my American countrymen who show so little class please stop making fools of yourselves. You have the right to believe and think anything you want, but to come into this thread and post such incentive comments is simply, wrong.

I wonder how you would feel if Steve Jobs was presented with a Congressional Gold Medal and Brits came into the thread posting derogatory comments about the award and how stupid it was for Mr Jobs to have gotten it. I don't think it would sit will with any of you.

Just learn to be more tolerant and show some respect.

It is funny to make fun of an award that conjures up images of jousting and dragons. You guys took too many serious pills today. I'm pretty sure the guy who won the award isn't taking it as seriously as some of you.

Jealous of this stupid man-made farce of an award? Ummmm no. No care for Brits or their made up royal family BS....

Am I jealous of his talent? Sure!!! Would I like his money? Of course!!!

Jealous of this farce award? No!

So do you feel this way about awards that your school gave out for talented students or awards for any sports teams that you might support? Do you feel this way about people who achieve academic degrees? Do you feel this way about people who win awards for acts of human kindness such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta or Nelson Mandela for not slaughtering the white minority when he came to power? Do you feel this way about people who get pay awards for their contribution at work? Do you feel this way about soldiers who gain medals of honour for acts of bravery in the defence of their fellow soldiers ?

Or is it simply this particular award of a Knighthood that has been an established part of the United Kingdom, centuries before the land you currently live in was discovered, that you take exception to ?

When you denegate any country's Traditions, you really only show the rest of us what a petty, narrow-minded person you really are. I don't feel ashamed for you, I pity you.

As an aside, the Monarch only hands out the Knighthood; it is our elected officials and the general public who put forward nominations for New Year awards. At the same time that Sir Ive was decided, a former drug addict and criminal gang member was also awarded for the work he has done for the last 8 years within his community, helping youths avoid making the same negative choices that he had made. These awards may seem to be a farce to you, but those who matter they are very important and shouldn't be insulted lightly.

At least have the decency to do your research before making blithe comments to us.

Have your opinion by all means, even post them here for our digestion, but at least try to make it an informed opinion, for your own sake.

EDIT I also don't have a problem with the funny comments here :)

I, Jonathan Ive, a robot. make the following statement:

"I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making,'' Ive, 44, said in a statement. "To be recognized with this honour is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful. I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design. I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple."

Anyone else find his reaction to the news odd?

Of this thread, I have only read a page or two. And, I want to say that I really like and admire Jony Ive. If people want to call him Sir, fine.

However, the fact that you still have "Royals" is a joke. I find hereditary privilege disgusting. Just because they were born in a certain family makes them above others is ridiculous. Also, just the fact that it's a "tradition" doesn't make it right. Obviously, I could list many bad traditions, but I will refrain.

Ummm, he didn't inherit this title. And he can't pass it on to his family. So....what's your point again?

My point was pretty clear. I prefaced it with that I like and respect Ive.

As for the one who gave the award/honor, it was given to him by someone who had no business giving it to him, in the first place. Yes, it's a bit of a divergence from the topic. However, some have used the "tradition" reason for others to respect it by.

Yeah, but he didn't get a "hereditary privilege," right? And that's what you stated you disagreed with?

I don't know why people worry so much about meaningless trappings of inherited power and privilege when so many elected officials only got where they are by being in political families.

No, you are just expected to provide your own horse, squire, armour, weapons and a small contingent of lightly-armoured troops. You get the coat of arms so your men can recognise your shield in the heat of battle. Knights are not nobility, they are simply armoured cavalry.

I bet he is busy designing hundreds of different coat of arms, armor, weapons and troop uniform now.

I find it hilarious that you seem to think this only happens with Royal Families, and not with life in general.

Guessing you think inheritance shouldn't be allowed either?

I'm British, and I'm proud of my Royal Family (well, most of them, at any rate). It's something that sets us apart, and shows that we have a history, and traditions that actually mean something to us.

Oh and for the record, the Honours lists aren't compiled by the Queen in her back room you know, they're the result of months of collaborations and consultations. She just hands them out.

I doubt Jobs would have been presented with the Congressional Gold Medal.
And as for an American award that should get derogatory comments, that would be the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Just take a look at some of the people who has been awarded it...

My disdain was for the "royals". No where did I criticize Ive.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Again, because there are other inequalities in America, it doesn't make hereditary privilege okay.

Why are you proud of the Royal Family? If they weren't born or married into it, they wouldn't be included. How many infidelities have they committed?

All of the Brits that I know, everyone of them laments the fact that in Britain, they are always asked "what does your Father do?". Meaning that their individual achievements are less than what was passed down.

It's time that certain traditions be done with.

I'm going to take part in a "good" tradition and celebrate the new year. Happy New Year!

Are you proud to be a member of your family? Stupid question I guess!! Were you not born into it?

If your answer is yes what gives you the right to be so proud?

It's time that certain traditions be done with.

So are you saying that there isn't a single award in the USA that isn't a tradition in some form or another?

As you can probably guess I'm a UK citizen but as it happens I don't care too much for the Royal Family, what I do care about is other countries slagging off traditions with no real argument. I wouldn't slag off traditions/achievement awards that the US hand out....it's plain rude and disrespectful no matter what your opinion.

I have NEVER been asked by anyone what my Father does, nor do I know anybody else that gets asked this either. I don't see what this has to do with hereditary privilege either - it's not as though I'll inherit his job.

Well said. Happy New Year :)

Rule Britannia. It is people like the mighty Sir Jonathan who make our glorious Empire so insanely great. Long may the jealousy of those we chose to free from the golden chains of our rule rain down upon us. Long live the Queen and all those that sail upon her.

Whats with all the anti-British jibes?
From my experience, Americans are more obsessed with the royal family/knighthoods and what not than any one I know here in England. We don't all either walk around with canes and top hats with tails or live on the streets picking a pocket or two. You would be surprised how similar the U.K. is to USA cities.

Well sone Sir Ive, thoroughly deserved.
