Knighthood of the British Empire? Hmm we're no more in the 19th century folks... there is no more British Empire now. These titles sound so pathetic and childish. Ppl are so proud of having 'democracy' (and exporting it everywhere in the world) and then they are so eager to bow down in front of such relics of medieval and colonial times.

Did it never occur to ppl that we live in a post-colonial world? If I were Indian, for example, I would be ashamed to hear that there is still people who are proud of advertise themselves as a KBE.

Considering we still have some colonies around the world, erm, nope. Britain is still a great empire, deal with it!

Oh dear Oh dear

It's a sad indicator as to the state of today's society that even good news such as this, is overshadowed by chauvinistic comments from a small minority of people seeking to damage the reputation of another countries traditions.

Please wake up, every country has these sorts of awards, it's a way of recognising truly deserving people and publicising their achievements. Why suggest dissolving such an award just out of jealousy that your own countries award isn't as popular as another's, robbing someone deserving of it?

Any way, I shouldn't be talking about politics in a story about design. I'll just leave by saying that this award is long over due and I'm glad that Jonathan is just one of many people publicising Britain's design ability oversees.

Yes, Oh dear Oh dear ... This award is kinda like Figure Skating in the olympics. The popular people win, where the unknowns that can do a quadruple quadruple lutz with a half twist of lemon (yes, that was made up) don't get recognized.

On top of it all, I'm sure there's a relatively high cost to this as well.

This is how society functions ... :(

A knight… like the people from the medieval times? When will he go on his first crusade? And most importantly: How does his armor look like, does he have a proper war horse and: Who is his squire?

While there is a lot of sarcasm in that statement, some of these traditions do follow through. Odds are he is a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. This comes with a lot of privileges including assigning squires if desired and access to royal facilities and functions. I'm sure the spiffs for the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London are awesome.

As an American resident, he can have any title of his patriot land. However, if he ever petitions for American citizenship, there are special considerations taken to the title. Any European royal title is typically a non-issue but there are some countries where a royal title can keep you out.

Very difficult to argue against.

Point proved, I mean Bill Gates quit to help run his wife's charity and cure Aids etc! A better reason then designing an MP3 player. I mean Ive's hasn't even ever designed a building, just luxurious gadgets. But the Queen is an Apple fan apparently.

And for those on here that seemed confused, Ive's is BRITISH, as far as I know you can ONLY use your Sir title if you are British? I think. Hence why Jobs can't I think?

Actually this announcement is part of the New Years Honours list where around 1000 people receive awards. Many of them are normal people doing normal jobs just like you and me. They may not be getting knighthoods but there are other honours such as the OBE and MBE. These honours aren't just for the rich and powerful.

When you become successful, not everyone is happy for you. In some cases, success can only contrast the lack of or degradation of ones position. These types become bitter, angry and only try to knock others down to keep their relative position. Happens in business, politics and even family life. This is why there are tall walls around country clubs and other VIP functions.

I know stories of those who knew very successful people during their early years and treated them like crap. Later, that person achieves and they become total jerks over it. One I know incident had someone arrested for vandalism after they threw their beer mug at a bar's flat panel television when they saw an old schoolmate being interviewed for a new business they started on the broadcast.

Just don't let the bastards grind you down.

One of the Mayor's of New York got a knighthood. For doing what? His job. Very well mind you. So Ive can get a knighthood for also doing his job very well. And Ive has changed the world with what he does.

Did Jobs run a charity to cure Aids?

Our last Prime Minister allegedly blocked Steve's knighthood:

The people that receive honours are nominated from all kinds of sources but most likely some ass hole MP, hence why people get awarded for nothing that benefits mankind.

From the story it doesn't sound as it was blocked as much as they wanted to sell one to Jobs for him speaking at their conference...

There has been a lot of buying and selling honors and giving them to celebrities to attract more news coverage lately.

Gotta admit I'm with you on this, and I'm British! Can't say I'm ashamed to be human but an award for designing simple things?
For designing complex things like cars sure. For designing a car that runs on water sure.
I'm, (insert flame here), lost as to why a knighthood is given. They seem to be handed out a little too easily. No, I don't have one before you ask, can't say I'm bothered either.

Making things simple and easy to use is actually more difficult that making them complex. Hiding the functionality while making it easily accessible to an end user is the highest achievement of most Industrial Design disciplines. He deserves all the success he gets.

I'm from the UK, and sorry, but whilst he may make some "cool/modern" looking things. I would never call them a great design.

Their form and look generally overtakes their use as a practical product.
Making a device that you carry, that is practically designed to fall from your hands and if it does hit a hard surface is almost guaranteed to break is a poor design for a device held by a human.

Sure, it may "look" nice, and yay, that's great. But it's not a good functional practical design.

Sorry, but I don't buy all the blind worship.

Giuliani didn't get it for doing his job. He got it for being the mayor in NYC during 9/11. (Excellent job, he put the city's emergency command center in the WTC, a terrorist target...)

Wouldn't surprise me. Gorden Brown is a self serving idiot. But I suspect, from the biography, Jobs would have turned it down anyway.

For all you people that don't understand they system and certainly for the ones that seem to have a complete meltdown at the idea. The queen doesn't just pick these people out of a hat... they are nominated! Anyone can get one. It's no different to any other award given by your peers. The actual choice of nominees is by civil servants and independent experts.

Jealous of this stupid man-made farce of an award? Ummmm no. No care for Brits or their made up royal family BS....

Am I jealous of his talent? Sure!!! Would I like his money? Of course!!!

Jealous of this farce award? No!

All awards are 'man made' It's just a British Knighthood has been around a lot longer than most.

There are lots of talented people and lots of rich people but relatively few British Knights. You see there are things money can't buy. :D

That's politics for you. Don't think much of any of our governments anymore. And why a dried up actor? Well done for acting for most of your life and becoming rich and famous, here have a knighthood!

And doesn't Ive's just design the casing and internals of devices? NOT the software? The bit that makes an Apple device easy to use?
