Apple's Latest Ad Highlights iPhone 16's New Camera Control Button

I suspect Apple will eventually find out based on usage statistics that it's way less frequently used than they anticipated. Its future is the same as 3D Touch and the Touch Bar. Very niche user base and will eventually go.
Same deal with the Action Button but lucky for the Action Button, it just replaced an already useless switch.

The most useless feature Apple has ever added was Peek and Pop. Second is Camera Capture Button. Third is Dynamic Island.

Its very awkward to use the camera button with the thumb. Probably why in the ad the thumb is missing.

But you have to live with the fact that third-party cases now have a large cutout there.
SupCase makes a bunch with the camera control overlay. I don't have it so I dont know how good it works but it's an option. Plus all of the cases Apple sells too.

That's pretty much the story of the iPhone since iPhone X. Ever iteration Apple is throwing stuff against the wall, marketing it as some big innovation, and then hoping it sticks.

Remember all those ads where they made such a big deal out of features like Dynamic Island, Action Button, and now this camera control? It's pretty embarrassing how much of a reach those were.

I think Dynamic Island is awesome for live activities. Keeps my sports scores on the screen.

Or they could improve it in later models to be actually intuitive and straightforward. But they sort of already designed themselves into a corner with the haptic interface.

I always wonder why Apple doesn’t hire our UX experts of Macrumors’ comments. Doesn’t mean that, sure, they make mistakes, but I’d be less pretentious when talking about “a lot of stupid decisions” of a very successful company known for being so user-centric.

I'm very unimpressed with the camera function button. It's nowhere near intuitive to use, and IMHO it's not unfair to call it a gimmick.

Taking pictures of mountain climbers and wild horses on the plains looks so majestic...

..I'd just use mine to take pictures of stray cats and maybe the street tacos I had for lunch. 🌮

I take a LOT of stray cat pictures while out in the field. I have a great one of 3 cats sitting on top of Chewy boxes on the front porch of a house. All 3 have this "This is mine, open it up and feed me MEOW look on their faces".

There are several places around here that have great street tacos, but I don't take food pictures anymore. I've been off social media for a few years now and the only thing food pictures are good for is social media.

Apple Event 2025
'This is the most advanced iPhone we’ve ever made, now with more things we know you’ll love. An even larger form factor for massive hands, another button to take even more beautiful photos, a thinner case so you can plug-in and charge more often, and now, available in striking colors that only Apple can do: 'Just Past Midnight', 'Spacier Space Grey', and 'Snowy Snow Field' We know you’re going to love it.

Ooh… a button/sensor. They didn’t learn much from the Touch Bar which was immensely more capable. OK, add it, fine… It’s not a selling point of a new phone.
