Moving to get our Apple Music plan cancelled and stick with local music. Will never purchase AppleCare ever again. Also looking to move everything iCloud-ish like backups to local storage only to drop iCloud.

These costs are getting whack and I can't wait to wash my hands of them. I guess these price hikes were the final kick I actually needed to finally make the moves, so perhaps I should thank Apple lol

This, pretty much. It simply comes down to what the market will bear. From the seller’s perspective, if customers keep buying after a price increase, that itself justifies the price increase. If the price increase dissuades enough customers from buying to the point that overall revenues drop, then the price increase was a bad decision, and would need to be corrected.

There’s no real obligation to the customer here other than keeping the customer happy enough to buy.

It’s just business.

Time will tell if these prices increases were the correct decision or not, but I’d place a bet that enough customers will keep buying, and so the market is able to bear the increase.
It's just lackluster business decisions when their revolutionary iPhone upgrade cycles goes into the dumpster.

Apple has built up so much brand loyalty/equity and ecosystem lock-in that I think it will take a lot more increases to materially impact earnings (revenue may see a dip).

I’ve been in awe of my Apple stock and every quarterly Apple earnings call. Based on all the complaints that pile up here in the MR forums, Apple should be fighting for their lives but instead are neck and neck with Nvidia for most valuable company on the planet.

I can just see Tim Cook and some other Apple big wigs just having one hell of a laugh… “Holy ****, Tim! Look how many people paid for the polishing cloth! You’re a genius!” “No, bro, look at how many ponied up for Mac Pro WHEELS!!! Hahaha!” “Craig, have you seen this? People are whining online about Liquid Glass in macOS but they keep upgrading - some even voluntary and not due to a system nag, and lack of 120Hz in the ASD - it’s amazing how many are just going whole hog with the XDR, and OMG look how many Magic Mice we still sell and we put the fricking charging port on the BOTTOM!!! Hahaha!!!” “Phil, I kid you not, giving the Pro phones a humungous plateau - gotta love it - we just remarketed the largest/ugliest camera bump/wart in history to something more palatable - and the phones flew off the shelves! We even had the lemmings in the press corp convinced our new "camera control" button isn't actually a button haha! Steve may be gone but the Reality Distortion Field is at full power!!!”

I could be wrong. But I think brand loyalty, supply chain optimization, ecosystem lock in are a formidable set of advantages such that Apple hasn’t ever really tested the resolve of their customers (other than maybe the Mac Pro contingent and then after playing around with their hopes and emotions for nearly two decades, just abandoned them this spring). We can go back years on MR and see people yearning for/forecasting some Apple comeuppance that never comes. We’ll see if this Fall (global thermonuclear war and worldwide depression being about the only things that will slow Apple down) is any different or more of the same with customers’ complaints all sound and fury signifying nothing.

P.S. I did a complete family upgrade this spring - new MacBooks, iPads, iPhones, Watches, so while I do not like to see the price increases, I won’t pull out my pitchfork for another 3-5 years when I’m ready to upgrade the household again (assuming prices just keep going up).

In tough times with the economy so Awful and the country in such turmoil, apple needs more profits for its rich investors ? Really, what a shame, what was once a respected company is now just another profiteering greedy sh pile.

Yikes, this may have a knock down effect for me. I get Apple Music for no added cost as a perk with my carrier plan but the last time the price increased on one of the other included perks I got a notice that it was being removed. If that happens again with Apple Music, I might also switch to another carrier since removing the perks makes it too expensive.

I don't understand people being upset at price hikes. Companies always try to maximize revenue/profit just like we all try to maximize our salaries and minimize what we pay for things. Everyone is self-interested - don't buy it if you don't like the price.

That's because, for some reason, many here believe Apple is immune to inflation. And shouldn't need to give their 160,000 employees raises and benefits increases. Or deal with other increasing costs of doing business (rising utility costs, increasing insurance premiums, and other costs).

Eh, Apple was never a charity. It’s was always a “for profit” company. And companies will care a lot more about people profitable than being respected.

People used to ridicule hipsters for this whole “they were only good when they were small and before they went mainstream” BS.

Apple has always tried to maximize profits and always will.

These price increase threads are kind of shocking.

Apple can't be expected to change their large margins - we should absorb it no matter the cost.

It's not as if Apple didn't increase trade-in prices because they know it's a crisis and this isn't about grabbing more profits. They did increase trade-in prices too, right? right??
Apple reports profits around 27%, which isn't outrageous. I suspect you're mentally calculating high profits for a few specific products, and the accuracy of those calculations aside, you're not factoring in the profit margins for all their other products. You may not realize companies often don't have the same profit margin across all their products. The margins vary with some high and some low, so what is relevant is their profit margin as a whole, which again is not outrageous. Also note, because their profits vary across devices depending on their business strategy, the component cost increases don't have to correlate exactly to the prices of those devices with those components. Apple may opt to raise the prices of products that don't necessarily have those components (eg. various subscriptions?), and opt to not raise the prices of products that do have those components, or delay raising them, or not as steeply (eg. iPhone).

I'm just glad there are some folks out there looking out for Apple and their profit margins.

What's important in life is corporate profit margins.

One thing I've really had to internalize this year is that a lot of people will always side with corporations even if they would benefit from not doing so. Studies should be done on this level of capitalist brainwashing. This comment will even get corresponding reactions from those exact people. I'd find it fascinating if it wasn't so sad.

I am totally surprised when people do that. Corporations are not your friends. Brand Loyalty is stupid

What's important is rational perspective.

Microsoft and Meta I believe last reported 35% profits, which is significantly higher than Apple's 27%. I merely try to paint a fuller picture instead of making accusations of greed based on bias and incomplete or wrong data.

Same.
It reminds me of folks getting convinced to vote against their own interest.
It feels like the same phenomenon in play.

Microsoft and Meta aren't in the smart phones market. That's like comparing McDonald's to Dollar General.

@subjonas This^^

Apple's net gross and fluctuations should always be put to us as increases. We could get in to all of the ins and outs of supply chain dynamics and knock on sub net costings, but that is Tim Apples job, he does know best. If trade in prices are not going up it must mean Apple are justified all the more and times must be dire profit wise. I'm hoping Apple see another record quarter soon!

Cheering on for the corporation who needs every cent!!
