Apple has shared a new "Shot on iPhone XS" video featuring Toronto Maple Leafs stars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on its YouTube channel in the U.S. and Canada, just in time for the start of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight.

In the short clip, Matthews films a day in the life of Marner as the teammates travel, practice, greet fans, and more.

The Maple Leafs are set to face the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN and CBC. The playoffs begin tonight with ten teams hitting the ice, including the President's Trophy winning Tampa Bay Lightning versus the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Earlier this year, while in nearby San Jose for the 2019 NHL All-Star Game, Matthews joined NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid, and Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller at Apple's Infinite Loop campus to discuss how technology is improving the game of hockey.

And they're usually followed up with some behind-the-scenes video, featuring the vapid git who "directed" it.

Do people really enjoy that kind of thing? Do they? Seriously, I'm curious! Because if so…

with 1 second clips constantly jumping from one scene to the next, they could have shot it on the iPhone 4 and it would've looked identical.

I have complete faith in their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I wish they'd link my NHL.tv app subscription to the TV App like they do for the NBA and MLB apps...

NHL.tv is always a step behind the others. I stopped subscribing due to the number of Maple Leaf games subject to blackouts here in New York City, at least 30%.

I usually ignore these posts about "shot on iPhone"... But I was obviously intrigued, can you tell by my avatar?

Go Leafs Go! - it will be tough though.

Edit: WTF? At the end it says "additional hardware used". Well is it shot on iPhone or not?

Sharks in six. It is my first spring in Toronto, so anxiously awaiting the sorrow of a late Bruins OT victory in two weeks to witness firsthand.

    Hey, equal rights for streamers.

I think the best way to introduce this is to guarantee everyone access to the Internet at a decent speed. All the world's libraries. The continental storefront. 9 billion 20th century tapes. Every business record available. The library at Alexandria for every person in the World.

Nah, let's just use it crappy politics, fraud and porn.

Shots get shorter and shorter. In lieu of good content, go for giving them a seizure.

Every Shot on an iPhone article that I can remember MacRumors posting has the phrase “Shot on an iPhone” in the title. They aren’t difficult to avoid if these types of articles annoy you.

And I’m rooting for Tampa Bay this year. And whoever is playing Boston. Unless it’s the Capitals.

Shot on iPhone, but maybe edited on a Mac. Or possibly an accessory lens was used. Who knows, send Apple PR an email or ask on Twitter, maybe they’ll respond.

Usually in these cases, the phone is used as the camera, but additional lenses are attached, and then the file is post processed on a different device.

it's a bit of a disingenuous marketing campaign, even if true.

I mean, it could be as basic as a tripod. For some of those shots, you'd usually use a Gimbal or additional lens / case.
DJI Osmo Mobile 2 or similar are pretty inexpensive and easy to use. That plus Filmic Pro really adds a lot of features over the default camera app. Still all "Shot on iPhone" despite the extra hardware/software.

it could be anything from a simple tripod, to some monsterous lens package. we don't know and there's a reason why the subtext that says it is in hard to read small font especially in comparison to "shot on iPhone".

the "Shot on iPhone" is a marketing campaign gimmick for the most part. it's a showcase of the photographers talent to get great shots more than it is a demonstration of the camera in the phone. The cameras are fantastic in modern phones. Apple's are amongst the best. But if you're processing the photo post hoc, or using some sort of lens system that isn't default in the camera than it's a bit disingenous to claim that this is a showcase of the iPhone's prowress at photo taking.

I have also done photography (hobby) with cameras, lenses and phones for Hockey (Former amateur player) and no camera phone in a practice facility (like imaged in this video) is going to take photos as clean and clear. No camera phone I have used can manage the lighting as well. These photos are clearly taken with a lens array to improve the amount of light that is coming in, plus obvious post processing on the shots.

Photos taken in a normally lit hockey practice facility are extremely hard to take due to the focused nature of the very bright lights focused on the ice surface, with less than ideal lighting surrounding it, leading to highly contrasting, but noisy overall photos with a combination of oversaturation and undersaturation. A hockey arena is one of the hardest places to get good photos in and makes camera phones struggle.

if you've ever had the chance to see a "behind the scenes" of "photo day" for the NHL players, the amount of specialty lighting that is used just to make usable photos is insane.

Apple's advertising team is about as lackluster as paint drying these days. The videos during Jobs's time were truly engaging and fun. Mac vs PC ads etc.

There could easily be a iOS vs Android campaign that would also be fun, but the problem is Apple usually copies android and pretties it up so there isn't really the same kind of leadership. Instead it's all about taking pictures, equality, yada yada that doesn't really have any appreciable impact on our daily lives. Walled garden indeed... Sadly Cook has made Apple sterile.

I have several DLSR / SLT cameras with dozens of lenses, cold shoe accessories, lights, external microphones, etc.
Doesn't make the brain of the camera any different, or the person behind the camera any 'better'. The point is the iPhone is a platform, no different than Canon / Nikon / Sony and there are thousands of accessories to extend the functionality of the phone. The beauty of the iPhone as a platform is the accessibility and ease of use. Often times, unedited iPhone photos and videos are amazing before retooling or color correcting. But if you want to try to make a movie, short film, etc... you can't just whip out your phone and start recording. Even commercials showing off the "true" capabilities of a camera phone are carefully crafted and planned.

This series is, as it always has been, a way to show off the potential of the platform. And they often use celebrated photographers/videographers to prove that creativity has no limit.
