What does "liquid" silicone mean?

It's made from a material called "liquid silica gel". Which isn't new, they've used this on silicone cases before. Most non-OEM "Apple" silicone cases are made of the liquid silica gel too. Calling the material for what it is now is weird, but this is Apple in 2025 everyone...

Owned Apple silicone cases since they started releasing them. Never had one "chip and start falling apart".

Owned one Amazon knock off. Thing started pealing with a month.

I have, and they have fallen apart. Coworkers have, and they have fallen apart. I had a Apple silicone case on my 13 and the bottom started peeling off within a couple months, on the replacement, both top corners start chipping and peeling....plus they feel like crap and stick to the insides of my pants pockets, so I would prolapse my pocket every time I removed it.

Meanwhile, I had a $15 Torras case on my 13 Pro, and it looked the same as the day I bought it when I handed it down last year. "New" Torras case, and by new I mean a year old, still looks brand new. Don't buy knockoffs, but a quality non-Apple case.

Apple cases, across the board, are overpriced and under-quality.

Apple marketing tries to get cute all the time like adaptive power mode when low power mode is the same exact feature!

Despite Tim saying that innovation is what Apple does... I truly believe Tim has to go if Apple wants to continue to be successful. They are going to lose some marketshare in the next few years. Greed is catching up to them.

I don't think Apple is super concerned about marketshare, and have been pushing into services as they know that hardware sales are going to start dropping. They have said as much.

It's just not an Apple thing, people are keeping their devices (phones included) longer and longer. I can easily see where the common phone upgrade time starts pushing 4 years. It's at 3, currently.

When it first was shown in renders I thought it was so preposterously ugly that it couldn't be real. And now, inexplicably, I am already getting used to it.

I predict that when the phone is officially announced, there will be a great hue and cry over the awful camera bump, and then everyone will accept it and move on with their lives. That is how these things normally go.
True — many of us thought the square camera bump was inexplicably ugly as well, and ultimately came to accept it.

But nevertheless, I think most of us could agree that iPhones were strikingly attractive at one time and are now basically ugly and utilitarian. We accept it, but this is no longer a device that anyone enjoys for its inherent beauty.

That bottom row could use a little extra saturation. And they still don’t have the color I want: pacific blue/teal

That camera bump truly is ugly. When it was just the top corner of the phone I was ok’ish with it, but this just looks ridiculous, especially in lighter colors.
And it’s going to still wobble. “Let’s add a bar, it’ll help stop wobbles!”

* proceeds to keep the camera lenses sticking out *

Apple is designing new "Liquid Silicone" cases for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with images of the alleged case colors shared by leaker "Majin Bu."

The lineup includes eight variants with a matte finish and soft-touch texture, including deep orange, pale orange, grass green, celadon, fog purple, grey blue, dark blue, and midnight black. The cases also have multiple cutouts for attaching a lanyard, which may be sold separately.

Bu claims Apple initially tested other shades including black, crag gray, carambola, tannin, and lake green, but "these appear to have been discarded." The leaker goes on to suggest that some of these hues may yet appear as seasonal variants that Apple could release at a later date.

Hit-or-miss leaker Bu previously shared images of new so-called "TechWoven" cases for iPhone 17 models that are allegedly replacing the fabric-like FineWoven cases that Apple discontinued with the iPhone 16 launch. Bu describes Apple's Liquid Silicone cases as targeting a broader audience than TechWoven, with an affordable price and a diverse color range.

It's still unclear if these cases are the real deal – if so, the name "Liquid Silicone" is seemingly based on iOS 26's new "Liquid Glass" design. However, Bu has a mixed track record with Apple rumors. They were most recently accurate about iPadOS 26 adding a Mac-like menu bar to iPads. We will find out the accuracy of the rumor in less than a month when Apple unveils the new ‌iPhone 17‌ models.

Bro that looks sooo fake, it’s like ChatGPT who made this image idk… check the Apple logo

great looking colours. fun choosing this year.

liquid siicone was apple's name for several iPhone cases before.
my apple battery case used that branding.
its also safe. and super easy to clean, with just water.
it went into and out of my pocket easier than other cases, and was soft to the touch.
i have been hoping they would bring it back.

here is the AI definition:
quote
Liquid silicone, when used in Apple-compatible cases, is generally considered safe, with Apple itself using it in its own cases for iPhones and MagSafe accessories. The material is non-toxic and free of volatile substances, similar to what's found in baby pacifiers, ensuring it doesn't negatively affect your health. Liquid silicone cases offer a soft, smooth-touch, and anti-fingerprint surface, often with internal microfiber lining for added phone protection.

Apple should do test runs with different logo placements for each supplier to identify source of a leak. Damages for a design leak could be ~ 3 months worth of estimated supplier gross margins — enough to hurt, but not to kill.

At least the black case looks black, their new “fabric” case in black is gray… 😉

the silicone case i ordered last january with my iphone 25e is already reacting to skin oils, embrittling and flaking away ... why does apple specify such crap elastomeric materials (it is what Steve Jobs referred to as the Sony timer, where the product craps out after warranty is out ...)

Much as we did with the original camera bump and the front notch.

The deep and pale orange cases are good. Would have liked to see a yellow one too. Maybe it will be released around April.
