My heart just dropped reading that. But fresh perspectives are always good. He’s also been trying to leave for the last decade.

Maybe he hated not working in the centre of Apple Park? Maybe the camera bump on the new iPhone is so bad that he quit?

I’m not entirely convinced Marc Newson is the best influence on him though. We shall see...

Ironic isn’t it? Most of the reasons people on here buy Apple products is because of their designs, now they are all moaning like kids how good this is Ive is going and how Apple can design better devices...

So they like the designs one minute, then hate them the next..

Ive is a very good designer, but his philosophy is to sacrifice everything to the aesthetic of his design and his goal is fundamentally impossible so it's all about trade-offs. He doesn't care if the product works or is usable or anything about that as long as it is as close to his aesthetic as possible. He worked very well under Jobs who had the presence to force Ive to make a functional design. That's why it's been nothing but downhill since Ive lost Jobs influence. Since 2012, the only thing Apple has done consistently is make every product worse than the one before it.

I hope people stop asking for Forstall to return and start asking for Ronald Wayne to return. Things have really fallen off since he left.

I’m sure the Apple is doomed crowd will love this, but it ultimately won’t make a difference. They’ll still work with him on Apple designs, but he’ll have freedom to explore other projects. Win win.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this was some compromising arrangement. Maybe Jony wanted to step out and spread his wings, and “leaving” Apple allows him to do that, while still working with them.

How many of those juniors would have released terrible designs had it not been for Ives leadership?

Junior employees always do what their bosses want them to do. They get assigned tasks, and they suck up to the boss. Yes, there were teams of people working under Jony Ive doing most of the actual work, but they did it at his direction, under his parameters, and they naturally would have their work biased by his vision, for good or ill. Nobody at Apple was going to turn in a design that was something they knew Jony wouldn't like, or flew in the face of his particular design aesthetic or philosophy.

Anyone who has ever worked at a large company would know that low level employees have very little freedom to be truly creative, even when the job ostensibly calls for creativity. There is a strict framework, projects are assigned with the requirements already given from upper management, and an employee works within that framework using the tools they're told to use, to meet the requirements they're told to meet.

In my mind I think the Professional Workflow Team and he were clashing on things... and the workflow team was responsible for the new Mac Pro (but not the price), and the fact that the Macs are being updated more regularly now. So Jony felt it was time to go. From now on products will be more function/form balanced.

Its a nice thought... don't ruin it for me macrumors forums!!! =)

It is a nice thought, but I don't think Macs will get any love as long as Tim "What's a Computer" Cook is running the company. He's the one who really needs to go.

Even comparing Ive's work under Jobs to his work under Mr. What's a Computer shows the Ive is not the problem, Timmy is.

Someone like Ive leaves the company and still all we hear is negativity and complaining in the comments. I’m personally incredibly grateful for the beautiful designs at Apple that have been led by Ive over the decades and am sad to see him go. I wish him the best with his new venture!

His work was brilliant when Jobs was involved. I think Tim may have allowed a bit too much latitude and lack of input in the design area. I think they (Apple) are really feeling some push back in sales and in the media about the designs of late. I also have the opinion the the new Mac Pro was not a Jony design. And I *hope* the rumored 16" MBP is not a Jony design. So *I* think it best for this to happen. Apple can get design cues from Jony, without it necessarily being "the" design.

You can imagine the cost of the keyboard replacement program since the repair part includes the trackpad and battery also. This could be considered a major, costly design failure if it was spearheaded by Jony.

He did some wonderful designs. Incredible designs. We owe a lot to him. But I feel autonomy and ego overcame practicality.

No wonder the design in recent years are so bad.
On the other hands, I realised that there are quite a few talents left under Tim Cook Leadership, so I Guess, time cook is the problem.

The $$$ the development world has spent on his doggone NOTCH -- beat it, already. sick of his arrogance. We'll have to cull all that ******** too!
Geez, you’re still complaining about the notch that almost everyone who has used a phone with it and isn’t hellbent on complaining about everything has agreed is not an issue?
