Seems to me to be a soft exit statement for stock market purposes, if they come out and say he’s leaving to pursue other ventures it would be a different reaction from the markets. It doesn’t seem that long ago he said he wouldn’t be going anywhere, and now with the iPhone at peak he’s picked the perfect time to call it a day. The question now is what does Apple require from his ‘new company’ that they can use on the mass market.

Does anyone here really believe he's going to be designing products for Apple?

Yeah, it's purely PR theater, letting Jony Ive save face, and so the Apple investors don't get all nervous. The smarter investors realize that there's a pipeline and Jony had a hand it in for several more years. That's the "work" Apple will be having him do with his new firm, basically just consulting on the stuff he already did while he was an Apple employee, if and when they need such consultations.

As soon as this new firm announces a couple new big clients, Apple will quietly sever ties with him for good.

Came here to say this.
But with “Ive vision” gone Apple can evolve it’s designs and perhaps start to truly innovate in design again

When did Apple innovate? Apple wasn't anywhere near where it is today, in the past century..... that you are here saying "truly innovate in design again"

Sad to see him going, but It seems like a good time, with the company doing the best it has ever and being the biggest its ever been, I'm sure he wants to spend time with his family and other things as well as he's only got 1 life to live.

Geez, you’re still complaining about the notch that almost everyone who has used a phone with it and isn’t hellbent on complaining about everything has agreed is not an issue?
No, I'm complaining about the amount of money the development world has had to spend to handle the notch. Since you clearly have no clue what im talking about id suggest you stuff your pie hole with something else.

Best Apple news day in a long time. Now, maybe Apple can get serious.

Man, four weeks ago, I was extremely pessimistic about Apple, and had been for years. What a difference a month makes. The Mac Pro was a welcome surprise. It's not perfect, and I still think they need something in between that and the miniMac that's not an all-in-one, but at least it's a good sign. Now Jony Ive is leaving. The only thing that would make me more optimistic right now would be if Tim Cook announced his resignation, and some visionary with an engineering background was going to take over.

If, in a year, year and a half at most, Apple announces a real update to the new new Mac Pro, and the rest of the Mac line-up is also healthy, I might even consider buying another Mac again, and a new iPhone. As it is, I haven't bought anything new from Apple in years, and I've been pretty much switching over to Linux for computing and just letting my iOS devices age without updating. Right now I'm being cautious, and moving full speed ahead on Linux because I think ultimately it's the future and the safest bet long-term, but it'd be nice to have the option of another MacBook Pro someday that doesn't suck, and to continue using iOS devices.

Well there's this: [insert image of overturned mouse stabbed with lightning plug]. I think he has had his elsewhere for quite sometime. I think he mentally left with the 10,000 dollar gold watch.

Apple's longtime head of design, Jony Ive, is leaving the company to start his own design firm, Apple announced today. Though Ive is leaving, Apple will be one of Ive's "primary clients," which means Ive will continue to do design work for the Cupertino company.

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he is looking forward to working with Ive "long into the future."

Design team leaders Evans Hankey and Alan Dye, vice presidents of Industrial Design and Human Interface design, respectively, will now be reporting to Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer.

Williams has overseen the development of the Apple Watch since its inception, and following Ive's departure, will spend more of his time working with the design team.

Ive said in a a statement that over the course of the last 30 years, he has worked to build a strong design team and culture at Apple, which is stronger and more talented today than at any point in Apple's history. There is no word on exactly when Ive will be departing Apple, as Apple's announcement simply says that he'll be leaving Apple as an employee later this year. In an interview with The Financial Times, Ive said his new company, created in partnership with Marc Newson, is called LoveFrom.

Apple will be LoveFrom's first client, and while Ive is departing, he said he will still be "very involved" for "many, many years to come." "This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change," he told The Financial Times.

In a separate announcement, Apple has named 24-year Apple veteran Sabih Khan to the executive team as a senior vice president of operations. He will be in charge of Apple's global supply chain, ensuring product quality and overseeing planning, procurement, manufacturing, logistics and product fulfillment functions, as well as Apple's supplier responsibility programs. He will continue to report to COO Jeff Williams.

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said "Sabih leads our Ops team with heart. He and his entire worldwide team are committed to delivering unmatched experiences to our customers, treating workers everywhere with dignity and respect, and protecting the environment for future generations."

[doublepost=1561685006][/doublepost]OMG Apple has no more stars of lack of stars......

When he first came into the computer space, it was an ugly box of cpu. Now it’s as minimal as it can get. The iPhone has nothing but screen now. There really is nothing left to design. The possibility that was once there is now gone. I would do the same, that is, to go into a new field, design a new thing. The laptop/phone are designed and redesigned so many times already. It’s more of the same.

Isn't that just another version of the "Everything that can be invented has been invented." quote?

Just because you have no vision for the future, that doesn't mean that nobody else has one either.

No, I’m saying the future is different devices. The desktop computer isn’t going to see major innovation ever again.

Exactly, that's the problem. Apple needs designers who can answer that question. Ive's vision for Apple's products has run its course.

I don’t think they need to answer that question. I think hey recognize the desktop is a shrinking category, Apple is focused on future products like iPad and other unreleased devices. No company is innovating desktops because the main market for them these days are businesses who couldn’t care less about new designs.

You mean drive the ship into the ground. Read up on Apple history. They are coming very close to those dark years. Fleecing your customers never ends well.
Maybe you should read up on Apple history. In the early 90s Apple wasn’t one of the biggest and richest companies in the world. They can run a loss for decades and survive with their cash pile. I’m sure Apple will be fine.

And notch.

Ive is tired, and nothing shows it more than the notch. Perhaps, the thin MBP's too. Oh, and the garbage can. Hmm.

Can we please have someone who has more design objectives than "make it thinner". Enough of the literally 2-dimensional thinking.
Making it thinner would be impossible with literal 2-dimensional thinking. They would have not have been able to conceive of volume :p.

I wish him well and he did a lot of positive things and some not so positive. To all of the haters out there, how many of you hit a home run every time you go to bat? Or for that matter even hit the frigging ball. Seriously. Overall, his contributions were positive and pushed a lot of things forward. For Apple to move forward they need new blood and new ideas and it needs to come from new people. For Jonny, I'm sure he feels the same need. To grow you have to move on.

You're correct. Tim Cook is a supply chain guy which means cutting corners to increase profit resulting in crappier products so opposite of design DNA.
Look, I didn’t like all of what Ive did, but I think they’re in real trouble without a guy in charge of design. Jeff Williams? Come on. Bring back Scotty!!

RIP Apple.

I predicted the new Apple display would have a (practically) zero bezel. Oink. I was correct. And now I predict the end of Apple as we have known it. Oink. itunes will be no more. And I predict Apple will completely do away with all i-prefixes within a year or two. In the future it'll be ( for example): Apple Phone, Apple Pad etc. The Jobs era is over, as of Mr. Ive's departure. We should be concerned, but all good things come to an end..... oink.

Watch out: Cooke might be the death of Apple. oink

He wanted to leave years again and they paid him to stay. Maybe they will bump his salary again to stay.

Don't delude yourself, Sir. He's gone. Oink

The garbage can and cheese grater are designed by thermodynamic needs for the designer. They added cosmetic shapes and let the mechanical engineers design the functional parts.

To sell it they put some really cool lipstick on a pig. Probably piercings too,

He's the last connecting tissue to Steve Jobs. Whatever is left are suits and ties.

Asking honestly because I am curious. Why Linux over Windows? And what do you see for the future of the platform?

*chirp* Why are we talking in animal noises *chirp* ?

Maybe he's going to start a new computer company and do it the way he always wanted to without the corporate meddling.
