Hello!
I am wondering if there will be an 32 GB RAM option in the M4 iMac.
I need those 32 GB for VFX and I want the iMac's AIO form factor and price tag, compared to a future iMac Pro.
What are your thoughts and predictions?
Thanks!
My prediction is no, there will be no 32 GB option, but that is just a guess of course.

That would be my bet as well.

They might use this generation to increase the base, and perhaps offer:

  • the M4 with 12 and 24 options
  • the M4 Pro with 24 and 48 options (probably not yet, but one can dream)
  • the M4 Max with 48, 64, 96, 128 options
  • the M4 Ultra, consequently, with 96, 128, 192, 256 options
OTOH, the iPad Pro with M4 comes with 8 and 16 options. But still starting out the Mac line-up with 8 in late 2024 seems overly stingy.

For anyone who wants a 27" or larger iMac, I hear a very strong rumor that it will be released exactly 15 days after I bite the bullet and buy an M4 Pro Mac Mini with a Studio Display. You're welcome.
Same but probably a Mac mini with 3rd party screen. Currently 2017 iMac Pro. But the only definite is m4 Mac with bigger screen then 24"

Is it possible for a trillion dollar company to take years to design a 27 or 30 inch iMac?
Or perhaps it is more likely they don't want to release such a size iMac?
More importantly, why do some people actively attack (in comments I mean) people who suggest it's a good idea to have such a larger iMac? That's the real mystery.

Could also have been chip supply constraints, directing chips still lagging in production numbers to the more in-demand machines. If we see a large M4 iMac in Oct and/or a large M4 pro/max iMac Pro in the summer next year it’ll answer that question.

Even a trillion dollar company can lose revenue if they release a product that costs more to design, manufacture and ship than the profits made.
A 27 or 30 inch iMac may only cater to a very small niche. The world, including most businesses I've seen, has mostly transitioned to a laptop + monitor solution for the convenience. There just isn't the volume there once was for iMacs. Apple, knowing this from sales data, decided to release 1 size that will please most people.

Defending Apple's ways is always interesting.

The niche being people who can afford the high price and accept having an expensive brick down the road when either the computer or monitor fails or the computer becomes obsolete, whichever comes first
You mean, like… a laptop?

I do get the point, but the iMac’s I had so far has been great and lasted long although I do miss the “upgradability”

Call me paranoid, but I think Apple is ditching the larger iMacs because they can/want nudge the potential buyers into a more expensive combo of Mac Studio + Display. Or just a Mac mini.

It’s classic Apple. Remove the middle step on the ladder, forcing people to choose between the lowest option or pay for more than they really need.

Except adjusted for inflation there’s not really much of a price difference between the 2020 27” and a current mac mini plus studio display…

Or they did market research, found that most people in that segment do not want an AIO, and decided to cater for them.

General inflation is a bad indicator, considering many of the component costs Apple pay have diminished in recent years...
