a high chance that the Studio and Pro will get M3 upgrades next

My theory was they would update the mini at the same time as the iMac with M3 and leave platforms that require an ultra, pro and studio, for the M4. That went down in flames. Eeeeiiiii...

I guess the real question now: is the mini discontinued or simply neglected?

For those with M1 machines like me (M1 Max Studio), how many years do you you think we have before Apple shuts us out of MacOS upgrades?

I’d honestly bet at *least* 2028 for the M1s, maybe longer, 2030 honestly wouldnt surprise me. Maybe I’m wrong but I think there’s good reason for that. For one thing they sold them for a long time, and they were a huge wave of sales, and for another Apple is now supplying new stock to Walmart as a low cost option, they’ll want to support those for quite a while.

On the other hand apple’s capricious, they could drop them with intel 🤷‍♂️. 2026 at the absolute least is prob a safe bet though, and as I said I think itll be longer

wow. 2025. a long time to wait to buy a Mac Studio to make the switch from my intel Mac.

And the Apple refurbished is mostly picked over. tons of M1 Macs in refurbished. with lousy pricing. who wants that??

Apple is going all-in on artificial intelligence across its product lineup in the coming months, so the M4 is expected to have a focus on boosting AI and machine learning performance. Rumors suggest there will be an updated Neural Engine with a greater number of cores to handle AI tasks.
What this translates to, beyond increasing the number of neural cores and capabilities may be beefier GPU and RAM for processing LLM.

On Android, on-device AI consumes about 4GB of additonal RAM. With M4, Apple may finally boost the minimum RAM from 8GB to 12GB or 16GB on the entry level Macs.

not worried about design refresh. I am concerned that Apple will not be competitive on the GPU front, ever. Raytracing in M3 got my hopes up.

I'll turn my eyes towards nVidia's new offerings instead.

There is no M3 Ultra at this time, but the architecture of the M3 Max chip has led to speculation that future Ultra chips might be standalone chips rather than constructed from two Max dies.

The M3 Max seems to lack the UltraFusion interconnect that allowed the M2 Max chips to function as an Ultra. Because that's missing, it's likely the Ultra chip would have dedicated development with customizations for heavy workloads

Of course the fact that there's no interconnect on the M3 Max might be the reason there's no M3 Ultra.

Economics favors smaller dice
Previous Ultras used UltraFusion
M3 Max has no UltraFusion
There is no M3 Ultra

Why is the conclusion here that M3 Ultra will be a single die?

Oh you mean you don’t prefer seeing “Apple’s GENIUS Master Plan! REALLY Apple? You did THIS? What Apple is REALLY doing!” Thumbnails? Coupled with Vadim’s over-the-top cringey fake enthusiasm voice “oh my god guys, this is absolutely mind blowing!!”

Interesting.

I'm thinking that Apple may announce a new Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra at the Apple event on May 7. Here's what points to some sort of new silicon being announced:
  • New Apple silicon chips are always announced at Apple Events (except for the M2 Pro and Max, but those would have been announced at an event in October 2022 if it weren't for delays).
  • The fact that Apple will be announcing new iPads at an event, when they were previously expected to be press releases, would point to there being something else to justify an event, which I propose is new Apple silicon. This is a similar case to last year's October 30 event, which caught me off guard since I didn't think a few new Macs were event-worthy.
There are two potential new chips Apple could announce - the M3 Ultra or the M4. What points to the latter is detailed here. But I don't think that's likely, because new M-series chips have always been included initially in Macs ever since they were called M-series chips, so having an iPad be the first device with the M4 chip would be odd.
Instead, assuming that the new iPad Pros indeed feature the t8132, I buy into the idea that the t8132 is actually a revised version of the M3 chip manufactured using TSMC's N3E process, as opposed to the N3B that the t8122 is made with. This would be similar to a revised version of the A5 chip which came out back in 2012, with the only physical change being that it was made with a 32 nm process as opposed to the 45 nm one used by the original. Such a revision of an existing chip probably wouldn't be worth having an event over, if Apple were to even discuss it at all.
What hints at a new Mac Studio with M3 Max or M3 Ultra chips is this:
  • As this MacRumors article says, Apple is testing a Mac Studio with M3 family chips.
  • Some chip ID's that were discovered here are 0x6030, 0x6031, 0x6032, 0x6033, and 0x6034. 0x6030 corresponds to the M3 Pro, while 0x6031 and 0x6034 correspond to two variants of the M3 Max. This leaves 0x6032 and 0x6033 as being potential unreleased M3 family chips. 0x6032 could be the M3 Ultra, since 0x6002 is the M1 Ultra and 0x6022 is the M2 Ultra. 0x6033 could be a variant of it, similarly to the M3 Max having two variants.
What points to there not being a new Mac Studio to announce at the event is A: there aren't many rumors of its existence, and B: the event is clearly iPad-focused based on the design of the invite.

One difference between MacBook Pro and MacStudio is memory bandwidth - 150 vs. 400 GB/s with Pro chip.

My M1 Max feels like it's still obscenely powerful/fast, so I'm thinking I may actually be in the market for an M4/M5 series chip. Maybe I'll used that saved cash on a Studio Display instead of a Mac Studio

If they build an M4 Ultra without a chiplet like M2 Ultra’s design, I don’t think many people can afford it.
I think the opposite. They couldn't sell Ultras because they were charging you for two glued Max chips without anywhere twice the performance. The value proposition was less than zero for everyone, Apple and the consumer. They were a double negative. They were just about obsolete almost instantly also with the following year's regular pro or Max beating them on a lot of metrics. Now instead of these useless glued chips, they can offer proper desktop chips and perhaps even server chips. I was originally tempted, but so glad I stayed away from these things. This is great descision they have made in going this route. For Apple and the consumer.

„Good mornäng 🙏🏻. We redesigned Siri from the ground up and you will love it. but you have to buy new macs with the incredibly fast M4 and the new neuronal engine , we added 2 more cores and we call it Apple AI. you get the macs starting with 8GB“

Still using a M1 Ultra studio base configuration and it still meets my needs to photo editing. Was considering an upgrade in the next year or two, but absolutely no rush as far as I am concerned.
That machine will be fine for photo editing well into 2030. Hell the base m1 mini is fine for photo editing if you don’t do anything heavy like open a ton of 60mp raw images at once

If I were Apple and wanted to really impress everyone, I’d consider skipping the M3 series for the Mac Pro and Mac Studio this year and jump straight to launching the M4 versions at WWDC. This would completely overturn the release schedule. Talking about the future of MacOS and AI advancements while simultaneously updating their most powerful machines with older-gen chips just doesn't look that great.

However, if Apple were to release next-gen Macs, like the Mac Studio with an M4 Max and the Mac Pro with an M4 Extreme — fully equipped to handle the upcoming AI enhancements and MacOS updates — they'd have something truly exciting to brag about. This move would not only make these powerful machines more appealing but also simplify selling high-end products before the M4 chip hits the more casual consumer products.

Plus, I'm tired of desktop Pro users always receiving the latest chips last, only to see a new generation arrive shortly after. It's time the pros got the best first, especially since they invest the most.

People love click bait headlines and Max Tech is a master of those.
Secondly, Max Tech does provide some interesting benchmarks.
Third, if Miani put his attractive sister in his video, he'd have three times more subscribers too :)
