It will never happen, at least not for a while. There's value (to Apple) for having different devices target different market segments. iPhone vs. iPad vs. Mac. Each attracts buyers differently. Once you blend them together, some buyers may be feeling that they are paying for something that they don't need.
It's more like it attracts one person to buy both of them. But yeah, if it happens, it won't be soon.

I hope the iPad gets killed instead. Give the Mac a touch screen and detachable keyboard, and it's done.
For the love of god no. The rigid frame of a proper laptop is a large part of what makes mobile work possible. Those awful flimsy foreskin keyboards provide no support or foundation and are infuriatingly unresponsive by comparison. Not to mention the clumsy hinges. Then there is the awful thickness that comes with a touchscreen that bloats and weighs it down. Which is particularly annoying considering that the elevation portion of the laptop (screen) then outweighs the bottom (flimsy keyboard). All for what in the end?

I’m not a fan of the iPad (not despairing those that are), but laptops should stay as laptops.
I believe the division exists between laptops and tablets for good reason.

That's only an interpretation. The Mac was *never* at risk of being killed off. It was just a marketing message to emphasize the strong capabilities of the iPad.
Well, despite your use of asterisks, whatever that means, I disagree totally. Look back at the Mac (and external display) update history at the height of this marketing message. I believe Cook saw the future of Apple being iOS, iPads and iPhones, which is quite understandable for a bean counter. Macs and OS were, I suspect, increasingly a distracting inconvenience for him. Then we had the "Mac is in our DNA message" as he finally realised it would damage the brand to turn his back on the heritage, as well as being a boost for the "lifestyle company" critics.

Cancelling my Apple TV+ after the free one year. Not much decent content compared to Netflix aside from Tehran. And, offloading my MBA M1 now that I know it's just all fake hype.

I just bought an M1 Mac Mini, but it won’t arrive for 2 weeks. Apple Silicon is the only really exciting thing happening in desktops or laptops at the moment. If Apple can keep the excitement for the chis going, then I expect their sales to continue to improve. I think the iMac is just a TAD too expensive and the sales may hurt on them ($999 would have been a killer price), but they could be a real hit if people are willing to spend the money.
Shoulda been $1099 at the low end. Instead, they kept around a low end intel model with a 7th (!) gen chip to hit that price point. $1299 for a desktop with 8/256 and 2 ports is more than a tad too expensive IMO. $699 for a mini with the same processor, RAM, and storage, plus Ethernet, HDMI, and usb-A is way more appealing.

I been waiting for Apple to be more aggressive with Mac solutions then past years. The early M1 laptops, and Mac mini have shown an impressive new direction to take for marketplace success, and this is only the beginning.
I’d agree about mini if apple hadn’t bungled something as simple as how to wake a display.

It will likely never happen regardless unless Apple hybridizes macOS and iPadOS in which case I feel there would be too many compromises but I could be wrong. I’m very curious to see what happens with iPadOS 15 in light of the recent upgraded iPad Pro.

Impressive! The Apple Pencil + Notability setup has never been better. I am loving iPad. Never liked them before.
Yep. I teach at a university and I used to be the only one with this setup at our department for years. Got the original 12.9 iPad pro in 2015. iPad+pencil really changed my workflow.
I would show it to people, they would nod and say it's cool but that was it, hardly anyone had iPads (or any tablets) at work.

The pandemic really pushed people to change. Now just about every faculty member has a tablet with a stylus (mostly ipads) for delivering online lectures. I got a new one in December too after my old one started restarting randomly. Not great when this happens during a lecture.

every tech company is prospering incredibly this year
Gartner estimates that Lenovo Group (ticker: 992.Hong Kong) remained the market-share leader globally, with 25.1% of the market, and 42.3% unit growth from a year ago. HP Inc. (HPQ) had 21.4% of the market, with 34.6% unit growth, while Dell Technologies (DELL) had 16.5% market share and 12.9% unit growth. Gartner says that Apple (AAPL) had 8% market share in the quarter, with units up a gaudy 48.6%.

Linux is an operating system, not a tech company, but the answer is very very well. Linux is, well, everywhere.

I'm so glad to see the some focus being brought back to the mac.
In recent years it was mostly all about iPhones, iWatches and iPads.

iPad Air 4 and M1 MacBooks are stellar products. They really knocked it out of the park with those.

I remember talk on this forum no so long ago about people wondering if Apple was abandoning the Mac line and going full force with iOS and iPadOS. Guess we got our answer.
OH, one of those would have been me :) It’s been a few good quarters for the Mac, to be sure. But, if you want to have an idea about Apple’s desire to GROW the Mac, look at the quantity of Mac ads being produced. As far as Apple’s concerned, as long as they can continue to sell 20+ million with zero advertising, then they’ll keep selling them. They’ll reduce the costs to produce them (by repurposing components from their top selling lines which also allows them to use fewer resources to produce them), but they’ll keep selling them. After this bump, it’ll be interesting to see what the sales look like in another 4 quarters.

The same could be said about Steve ”milk the Macintosh for all it’s worth – and get busy on the next great thing” Jobs.
