They could call it @pple. Or maybe that's too hard to say. Something with "online" in the name.

Mobile Me sounds too much like a corporate invention - people won't like it.

Price Drop.

It would be nice if it came with a Price Drop ($25 a year) or a one time fee $99 for the life of your mac (being the average functional life span of a computer is 4 years makes it sill $25 per Year) even if it was $250 for an endless license. However while the current .MAC seems nice. I can't justify $99 a year for many services that google offers for free or I could easilly setup myself. Being that I only use a Mac at work when it is mine, Back to My Mac featre and many of the other ones are not compleatly useful for me. However if there was a price cut I could see a benefit.

I just hope Apple doesn't name it something like .Apple

This makes me wonder about the new e-mail address names that will be given for this service. If it won't be called .Mac, does that mean new addresses won't have .mac extensions? (They HAVE to keep all current .mac addresses, right? That would be super-scandalous if they didn't -- and man, would I be pissed).

.Apple doesn't make much sense, if they plan on using the same name as the extension for e-mail addresses -- as everyone will just look like they WORK at Apple. I wonder if WHATEVER the new name is, if they will still offer an "@mac.com" extension as an option...

Apple appears to be poised to rename and revamp this 6 year old service.

Actually, .Mac is the 2nd name this service has gone by - and it has been around for 8.5 years now. It was originally called iTools. I have had my .Mac e-mail address for 8.5 years.

I suspect changes as well. Something called AOS.bundle has been added in core services. It contains pictures related to syncing. The images however still contain the words .mac.

Something has to happen with .Mac, Apple can't keep it as it is.

The services are pretty poor, unless you've got a photo album or small web site you want throwing up there... saying that, the email is good. That's about all though.

This prolly has to do with those .me domains that apple and other businesses bought up when released. .me referring to some small country

Great, we're gonna waste half the keynote on a service not many people care about. Unless this only takes a few minutes to mention, which I doubt it will, I'm not too thrilled about this.

This is great news. I was disappointed with Apple's last .mac upgrade. I thought it was going to be much bigger than it was.

I expect that in the BIG picture Apple will be using .mac services to compete against Microsoft Exchange in the Enterprise. We could be seeing one step towards that end.

Reasons to be cheerful...

I desperately want .Mac to justify itself, it's about time Apple added some new features to make it a 'must have'.

So does this mean we will see t-shirts at WWDC that say:

I use %@.

Haha loving it!

I've had .Mac for just under a year and really like it, being in the UK however iDisk transfers take a year. I hope they leave the old http://web.mac.com/username/ address intact though as i have a plethora of links going to various URLs like that.

And here's my guess at a name:

.Nice Tools That You Pay Us For To Let You Do Some Nice Extra Things With Your Mac, iPhone and Even a PC (Just How Hot Are We Right Now?)

NTTYPUFTLYDSNETWYMiEP-JHHAWRN?

That would be great, I have had .mac for awhile and an update would be nice.

I would think .mac would be going up against gmail. Unless Apple will be providing a way for enterprises to run their own .mac servers.

Now for small business that may not be a bad idea. Apple hosted exchange type services...

From a programming point of view this change is what Apple's programmers should have done day one - have a single instance of the name, then reference the name everywhere else. It's like making an application multilingual. If this weren't happening just before WWDC I'd think it was just the OS programmers cleaning up their code. Seems more like word came down there was to be a change in .Mac's name and they said "crap, we never did this right..."

.Mac is great and for me good value for money as it saves my time and has many features I use on a regular basis :-

I publish 6 web sites from iWeb to .Mac very easily and quickly.
I publish Photos and Videos from iMovie and iPhoto.
All of which resides on my 10Gb of space (of which I am only using 2Gb at the moment.
I have a .Mac mail account as my main email address. It has great junk mail filters and I access it on my iPhone, iPod touch, Web and Computers.
I sync my Address Book, Calendar, Bookmarks, etc, etc via .Mac to my 2 computers, both in sync all the time.
I use .Mac to access the Back to my Mac feature which lets me access my desktop from my laptop when away from home.
I access my Bookmarks and Address Book while at the office
I use the free Backup software to backup key information to my .Mac iDisk.
I use iDisk to transfer large qualities of data to my friends.

For me it is simply the only way to do all the above seamlessly and with no fuss or pain. Yes you can do it for free or less from various suppliers, but for ease of use it can't be beaten.

Hmm....i use Gmail as my main email provider, but i also have .Mac. If they did push to iPhone i might just have to forward all my Gmail to .Mac.....

not all bad, but could be way better

I have used .mac for years. The backup service is mediocre and now somewhat obsolete, but iWeb has been a very convenient service for sharing various media. For some reason though, uploading to iDisk, which had been a very useful feature in the past, has become excruciatingly slow lately. I don't have any idea why, or what that's all about, but iDisk is all but useless now. .mac has so much potential, so I'm eager to see what Apple has in store for this much needed upgrade. It wouldn't take much to justify a meagre $99/year!
