I agree about the silliness of the name. I don't want to change my email address after this long.

i'm certain the won't force old customers to change their email. i can even imagine that the name@mac.com stays.

but having a service that integrates iphone, mac would be great. and finally a new name. .mac was always awkward.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
I'd pay $49 or $59 for a yearly subscription without the iPhone, but no more than $9.99 or $14.99 with an iPhone subscription.

8. Back to my mac will work. Even if it's just the once. I would love to be able to control my home Powermac from the office... not to do anything really but just to show off that I could do it.
...
BTMM works for me, but with an ADSL line at home it makes controlling the home computer from the office painfully slow. OTOH, BTMM on the local network at home is almost like being in front of the other computer. As somebody else said, check your router settings at home and see if UPnP needs to be enabled. It worked fine for me using a Linksys WRT54G router (UPnP was enabled by default) and now using an Airport Extreme. Also make sure that BTMM is enabled on all computers involved.

They could call it @pple. Or maybe that's too hard to say. Something with "online" in the name.

Mobile Me sounds too much like a corporate invention - people won't like it.

Or think it means mobile millennium edition.

MobileMac would be ok. And mac.com would still tie in.

What if Mobile Me is just the name for a service inside the .Mac (or whatever) bundle? I can't see the whole .Mac being changed to a stupid Mobile Me name...

Joshua.

I don't know if anyone's posted this before; but, I got an e-mail from Apple yesterday telling me my .Mac would be renewed in 30 days. Here's part of the e-mail:

As you know, we've been enhancing .Mac to make your connected life even easier. .Mac makes it easy to share what you create with iLife '08 and publish with iWeb - Photocasts, blogs, podcasts, and other web pages. Your .Mac account includes 10 GB of combined iDisk and email storage, with options to upgrade to more. Your iDisk is accessible directly from the Mac OS X Finder and from a browser on any Internet-connected Mac or Windows PC. Backup 3 makes safeguarding your valuable files easy and convenient with features including one-step backup of photos, movies, and music. .Mac Groups lets you bring the groups you belong to online to share messages, calendars, group files and web pages. And .Mac provides a steady stream of discounts and member benefits on Mac-related software and services. Be assured, there's more to come in the year ahead.

Mobile Me for Windows?

My question is ( and i apologize for not reading through 153 replies ) is:

If the new service will sync with iPhone then can we presume that the new dotmac will work with iPhone owners who sync to a windows PC?

This is the one time I hope the Apple rumor community falls on its face. "Mobile Me" is a horrible name. I've found myself on more than one occasion pitching .mac to friends and family. I'd feel pretty stupid singing and dancing for "Mobile Me".

Glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks Mobile Me is a silly name. Let's hope it's just part of .mac. I guess it could be worse, they could have named it Bob :)

I'm sorry, but I don't think they are renaming all of .mac to Mobile Me.

I understand the desire to change the name to something less Mac-centric, given the advent of the iPhone. However, I find it hard to believe there will be a button in iPhoto that says "publish to your Mobile Me page," for example.

Maybe Mobile Me would be some subset of services relating to Back to my Mac, iPhone syncing, etc.

Regardless, I applaud an overhaul of .mac. Long overdue.

As a .Mac user for some time, I must say, even though its deeply integrated into iLife apps, it has no integration what so ever with the OS. Leopard and .Mac are not friends, and the .Mac user interface online is just bleh. They need to add more useful services that actually mean something, and integrate it better with the OS. I think .Mac right now is only good for iDisk. But I will say, this is just IMO.

You guys are completely right about Mobile Me being a stupid name. It's about as stupid a name as Nintendo Wii and we all know how much of a complete failure that was.

Hopefully they do something with the service because it really seems behind the times and overpriced.

If theydon't then they should just further partner with Yahoo and Google and further incorporate them into OS/X.

Name Game

I agree. Until users are utilising the product to evaluate its usefulness, all this speculation does not serve much use [but I didn't say it is entirely useless].

Is the expression 'get over it'? [Is mobile me a sick name?]

I am so excited! I really think there are going to be several nice surprises at WWDC this year.

I am a .mac member and I haven't done much with it but host my iWeb site. I wish that they would do something like maybe with the new Push e-mail if you do not renew your subscription then you can still keep your e-mail account for free but maybe the push gets turned off. At least that way if you did not renew you wouldn't lose your entire e-mail account :(

They do need to lower the price. If they do that and promote it rebranded with the iPhone like this to Mac and PC, it could really take off. Come on Apple start showing us the future of cloud computing :D

This may push me into finally getting .Mac.

Anyone know of any great advantages to having an account (as .Mac exists now)? Just curious as to what people use it for...

My major use for.Mac is to share photographs. With today's 6-8MB image sizes, I would be lucky to be able to attach one picture to an e-mail. By using the .Mac Web hosting facility, all I need to e-mail is a link.

iDisk is pretty neat and a bit useful (not worth the $100 per year though). I got stuck with a .mac account. I had it when it was free and got fully established and then they started charging for it and I didn't want to deal with the hassel of changing my email address with everyone I know.

Other good features include iPhoto web galleries, .mac screen savers, and iWeb web sites. Still not enough to justify $100 per year mainly due to the storage space.

$99 a year that includes your email, a website, easy way to share photos, etc, plus online storage seems pretty cool to me. I ran my one website for a while (6 years) and the domain name was $100 for 5 years and the web hosting for 5 gb space and 20gb cap on bandwith was $26/month. in all that came to $322 a year. I was also using MS FrontPage until they discontinued it, and their new 'Web essentials" did away with photo gallaries, blog spots, questbooks, and some nice other utilities. Plus Wed Essentials upped in price by about $100. so to me, having iLife and considering a .mac account would be economical for me - even if all I use it for is a website.

Again, Mac is simiplier and save me money over M$ alternatives.

I was considering buying .mac this week, but sinc WWC is only about 1 week away, I will put it off.

Yeah, what is up with ISP's limiting you to a file (including the email message itself) to under 5 mb. I can't share anything these days (I have even had trouble with a one page word document getting rejected. thus why I got a gmail acct. Atleast they allow up to 20mb attachments. too bad anyone without gmail gets errors that their ISP won't let the attachment through.

thus why .mac sounds like a winner to me.

Store being updated (somewhat)

I actually just made an account on here so I can give my opinion on issues and whatnot.

Anyways, Apple seems to be updating their Online US store (graphically atleast). Went to go look for a Macbook Pro on store.apple.com and the config page looks alot nicer (hasnt changed for edu page yet). This may go along with the new .Mac and/or the "virtual store" they may present in June
