This would make an excellent remote for an Apple TV device, or an iPod Touch with TV output.

(I think the new Apple TV everyone is rumoring will simply be an HD-video-out version of the iPod Touch. Voila, you have the portability to bring your movies to a friend's house, enjoy them with or without a TV, and this device would allow you to play iOS Games and use Apps on your TV. Bam!)

Why with a MacBook? Ergonomics.

Speaking for myself, I use a wireless keyboard with my MBP and use my iPhone as an imperfect wireless trackpad. I'd love to have a real wireless trackpad. Why? Ergonomics... My MBP us on a stand and my wireless keyboard and trackpad being independent allow me to use them in a way that best suits my body. When I travel, I just bring the MBP without the rest.

A Mac rumor on MacRumors instead of tweaking the same two or three stories about iPhone 4 and presenting them as news...again? Say it isn't so! :D

That being said, this device looks really exciting if it ever happens to be released.

Way to insult the team!!! If you don't like it, you know where the close button is!!!

Curious

I wonder if you flip it over, it has either a rumoured 5 or 7 inch touchscreen. Would make a great :apple: TV remote that even grandma would be happy to use. ("really gran, you just pinch to see the channel listing, scroll up/down, click to select. And if you swipe, you can see things like the grandkids pictures I posted to FB").
Just a (random) thought.

This is great news, I have been putting off buying a Magic Mouse because of the possibility of the rumors of this becoming a reality. Will go really well with my MBP, Griffin Elevator, Apple Wireless Keyboard :D

Just as accurate? Not quite. I love my MBP's track pad but a mouse is much more accurate for fine work.

A mouse might be "more" accurate than a track pad, but for serious precision you need a tablet - i'd happily drop my mouse entirely in favour of a tablet/track-pad combination. The 'magic' mouse just sits there gathering dust unless I use it's scrolling function.

Interesting

Looks interesting. Does it say how big it is anywhere? If this could also be used with a stylus for input into stuff like photoshop I think I'd get very excited.
On a side note, why hasn't anyone made an app for the iPad yet that allows this sort of stylus input into creative programmes on the mac? I'm sure someone here will be able to tell me. Probably has to do with use of various private APIs I guess (though I really have no idea, I'm a designer not a programmer).

Sweet! I much prefer controlling my DAW from a trackpad than a mouse. More intuitive to scroll around, even with the Magic Mouse. I'm just wondering how it'll receive click commands. Is the full thing a click, like the latest glass trackpads? Will there be two finger clicks or something?

Nice, but it will probably cost $50-80. I think I'll stick with my Magic Mouse / Wacom Intuous for now!

Well, $50 - $80 is a hell of a lot less than an intuous, and less than the magic mouse by UK pricing, so I can't see the price getting in the way for many people who are looking for a mouse replacement/supplement.

I know I'm about to get made fun of but...

When I play FarmVille, I prefer an actual mouse, that's why I use my iMac. I find farming kind of difficult with the trackpad on my MacBook.

It will probably be used with desktops, since the Macbook has a built in trackpad.

I agree primarily desktop, but for those that use a stand for their portable and do an external keyboard and prefer a trackpad might want one of these....

Personally I like it because I like to mix up how I control the cursor- mouse and trackpad- that helps me prevent sore hands/wrists/fingers and hopefully carpel tunnel as there are different movements required for each device.

Scrolling in a browser? Pinch/tap to zoom?

Obviously you are not trying to control your HTPC with a mouse 10 feet away. Think. By the way, who the hell down ranks stuff like this? Why is this a bad story to anyone? The article could says every macrumors member gets a free MacPro and there would be 25% of the poster down ranking the story?! Sorry, I'll get off of my pedestal.

Next iMac doesn't come with a mouse, but a Magic Trackpad? I think it's a good possibility. Comparing interface in OSX between a mouse and a trackpad, I am loving the trackpad even more because I can do more gestures.

Seems like a good transition device to more 'touch' computing.

An 'iMac touch' would look hideous with all the fingerprints over it, as far as mobile goes-it's doable and function-able, however in a desktop environment, meh.

I'm hoping it is a desktop accessory.

I love my trackpad, but love my mouse too...

possibly, Magic Slate/Keyboard/Magic Mouse...

But as others have speculated it might be for more distance usability. Apple TV? iMac? Mac Pro, who knows... its shiny and has a logo, I'll buy it even if it has antenna issues :D

Never thought of that, good point.

You should get a prize.

Arn, Avatar the man, heck give him two.

Apple TV

Hopefully this is for controlling the iOS based Apple TV. September?

On that note... why hasn't Apple updated the Remote app to a universal binary so that we can use it on an ipad with a bit more functionality than using the iPhone app all tiny in the centre of the screen? Go on Apple... you know you want to:)
