This news story will more than likely take off with the Fandroids...Nobody will top this.
Apple should really just hire someone to drive around using Google Maps for 40 hours a week and write press releases when he/she finds something wrong. Good grief, it's as if some people haven't used a GPS that will tell you to make 18 U-turns instead of taking the next left in 100 feet. It's software mapping the country (and others). It's going to have errors.
Apple should have just paid google instead of going through this inefficient route.
How is this still front page news.
Google maps was riddled with errors in the early days. It took 4 years for them to update a 2 way street I worked in from a one way street.
It is only because Apple has 700 million IOS devices out there that a lot of errors have been found. All will be fixed in due course.
Google wouldn't give iOS users turn by turn navigation at all. The only reason they have it now is to appear the "better" alternative to Apple Maps. I've had Google maps give me insane directions also, Apple's just getting all the press because of how poorly they came out of the gates.
I'm not saying Apple are blameless here, but that blame needs to be spread around a bit to the data providers. Apple are also far from the only people with mapping errors.
What surprised me is that after the debut of Google Maps in the App Store why would anybody still use Apple Maps?
Google was prepared to offer turn-by-turn to Apple, at a price of course. Problem was that Apple wanted it for free.
Maybe. After all the directions don't ever tell them to drive onto the runway, and if it is a valid road for a car to be on . . .
The real question is the source of the data. That could be the issue. After all, apple does not send out tons of cars to map things for them. Much of what they get comes from local gazetteer data. And if that data, which they presume to be correct, has flaws. Well perhaps it's not apple that should be sued
Apple Maps is faster than Google Maps but at least here in Spain it's not usable because searches and directions are wrong, street names are wrong, I can't use it to search bus directions and it doesn't have street view to name a few.
Maybe someday Apple will have all of this but then Google will be steps ahead..
Google still beats Apple when it comes to Data. It's sad their relation didn't continue because that would have provided the best user experience.
